Fortune

June Havoc Theatre, 312 W. 36th St.
"Fortune," a tale that spans 90 years, two countries and two wars, tells the story of Rose Fortune, a slave girl born in Philadelphia in 1774, whose family is uprooted to Virginia just as the Revolutionary War breaks out. In one short night, Rose's life is forever changed when her father leads the family away from bondage to safety behind British lines; but as it becomes clear that the war is lost, the Fortune family, along with other Blacks and White Loyalists, are shipped toward the sanctuary of other British ports of call, including that of Nova Scotia, where Rose soon finds herself. With her father's death from wounds received in battle, Rose is left to care for her disconnected, heartbroken mama, while confronted with the realities of their new Freedom and an unforgiving terrain occupied by resentful locals and desperate neighbors.
