Mamet and Pacino Reunite for China Doll

David Mamet debuts his new play China Doll written specifically with Al Pacino in mind.

Advance notice to anyone who appreciates an A-List Broadway reunion: Get ready to post China Doll on your fall, 2015 calendar.

Set to begin previews at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on October 20th, David Mamet’s new play will star Al Pacino -- last seen on Broadway in the 30-year anniversary revival of Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross and, on HBO, in the title role of the Mamet-penned Phil Spector (co-starring Helen Mirren, currently playing QEII in The Audience). As Broadway insiders rightfully assume, the new play will be produced by Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel, and Steve Traxler, a theatrical triumvirate whose relationship with the playwright is legend: China Doll marks the 10th collaboration between playwright and producers.

Joining Pacino onstage will be Fran Kranz, a recent alumnus of this season’s Richards-Frankel-Traxler hit revival of You Can’t Take It With You.

And, for the trivia-inclined, China Doll will be directed by Pam Mackinnon whose resume includes The Heidi Chronicles (Richards and Frankel producers), currently playing at the Music Box Theatre starring Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss -- who made her Broadway debut in Mamet’s Speed-the-Plow, produced by... Richards, Frankel, and Traxler.

According to Mamet, "China Doll is a play about a wealthy man, his young fiancé, and an airplane. The man has just bought a new plane as a wedding present for the girl. He intends to go into semiretirement, and enjoy himself. He's in the process of leaving his office, and is giving last minute instructions to his young assistant. He takes one last phone call...The characters are Mickey Ross, a billionaire; Carson [Kranz], the assistant, and a telephone. I wrote it for Al. It is better than oral sex.”

And there you have it: a prudes-beware endorsement from the world’s foremost prude-slaying playwright – plus a script custom-written for Pacino. My advice: Keep an eye out for tickets when they go on sale (most likely before summer) because these babies are going to go fast.

Previews for China Doll will begin on October 20, with opening night slated for November 19. Click for more Broadway show listings.
