Jon Beshay - After-Hours Jam Session - Smalls Live
June 18, 2017 - New York City

"I play music because I like to listen to music, and when I'm playing I'm in charge of what I'm hearing." Jonathan Beshay-jazz saxophonist, bandleader, and composer-says that there's no other agenda when his group takes the bandstand. Fortunately for audiences, Beshay likes to hear good music. His first role models were the old masters of jazz (John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and Lester Young) but it would be a mistake to assume that modern music isn't fair game for Beshay. Artists such as Walter Smith and John Ellis make their way onto his list of influences, all uttered in the same breath as Coleman Hawkins and Woody Shaw. When pressed, he compares his musical process to the la... (read more)

Jake La Botz ,Fred Thomas of the J.B.'s - Mercury Lounge
June 19, 2017 - New York

Jake La Botz's story seems entirely too cinematic to be true – a film with shades of Merle Haggard and Tom Waits and Charles Bukowski and Mark Twain and Sid Vicious and David "Honeyboy" Edwards and Jim Jarmusch and Boxcar Bertha and Jack Kerouac all wrapped into one. And all of these experiences play into his new album 'Sunnyside,' out May 12 on Hi Style Records, a record that shows that his imagistic songwriting, storytelling range, and recounting of his experiences are just as deep as the aforementioned list of greats. A juvenile delinquent in the early '80s discovering punk music and drifting. A high school dropout who works odd jobs. A subways and street busker taken under the wing of... (read more)

Chastity Belt Sneaks - Music Hall of Williamsburg
June 20, 2017 - Brooklyn

few years ago, while in a tour van somewhere in Idaho, the members of Chastity Belt—Julia Shapiro, Gretchen Grimm, Lydia Lund, and Annie Truscott—opted to pass the time in a relatively unusual fashion: They collectively paid one another compliments, in great and thoughtful detail. This is what we like best about you, this is why we love you. I think of that image all the time, the four of them opening themselves up like that, by choice. It's hard to imagine other bands doing the same. But beyond their troublesome social media presence—see: the abundance of weapons-grade duck face, the rolling suitcase art—and beyond the moonlit deadpan of say, "IDC," lies, at the very least, an honesty a... The Interplay Jazz Orchestra - Birdland
June 25, 2017 - New York

THE INTERPLAY JAZZ ORCHESTRA "Is there any sound as glorious as that of a big band in full swing? While that question is somewhat rhetorical, there's no question about the fact that the big band was once synonymous with all that was right, good and adventurous in jazz. Europe is full of state sponsored large ensembles, New York seems to birth a new big band every week, and bands built by cutting edge colorists like Maria Schneider continue to get their hard...
