Matthew Curry - Mercury Lounge
August 13, 2017 - New York

Curry's roots certainly run muddy-waters deep, something that's not been lost on the guitar legends he's had the honor of sharing the stage with over the past few years. "Matthew Curry is a phenomenal guitar player," marvels Peter Frampton. "A highlight from my tour last year was jamming with him. He's the next guitar hero!" Echoing that sentiment is Steve Miller, whom Curry both opened for and joined onstage during an exhilarating nine-date run in Canada as well as dates all across the US. Steve Miller declares that Curry is a "wonderful guitar player [and] great songwriter in the Stevie Ray Vaughan area of virtuosity and originality." Besides continuing on with the Steve Miller Band, Curry will also be opening for The Doobie Brothers and Don Felder. "I'm absolutely thrilled," Curry says of supporting these and other heavy hitters. "We have so much fun out there and I really, really enjoy it. I grew up listening to those guys, so to be out on the road with people like Don Felder, The Doobie Brothers, and the Steve Miller Band is quite an honor." Not only does he get to go toe to toe and string to string with some of his heroes, but Curry recently became one of only 10 artists ... (read more)

Ayo Breeze X Cheffboy Album Release Show - Mercury Lounge
August 13, 2017 - New York

Ayo Breeze is a New York Hip-Hop recording artist, song-writer, and producer. Born in Crown Heights Brooklyn and raised in Jamaica Queens, his immersion in Hip-Hop began at home. His father, a local radio DJ, gave him a MPC player and by 8 years old he was already making beats. He became known as Breeze for his natural laid back swagger and signature sound, with its R&B melodies, infectious beats, and positive vibe. "The whole reason for me even following music was to stay out of trouble…" he says. "[When] I was 15 years old I was approached at gunpoint by a guy in an argument in Hollis Queens. I had the choice to calm everything down. That was a changing point for me, in terms of taking life more serious… I have to go a different route, I have to live life. Living life today is what my music is about. " Shortly thereafter his dad helped him build a studio to begin recording his music. By high school, Breeze was DJing to make a living and performing as a part of the duo Breeze and SP (currently known as Ayo Breeze x Cheffboy.) The group put out several mixtapes and built a fan-following in the tri-state party scene. Breeze's first solo album "So Past Done" arrived in 2013. It n... (read more)

The Districts - Rough Trade NYC
August 13, 2017 - Brooklyn

It's not uncommon for musicians to grow and evolve between releases—but even by those standards, the Districts' Popular Manipulations is stunning. The Pennsylvania-borne band's third full-length represents an exponential leap in sound and cohesion, an impressive and impassioned burn with a wide scope that threatens to swallow everything else surrounding it. Perhaps it's a cliché to say so, but while listening, you might find yourself wondering why people don't make indie rock like this anymore. For such weighty thematic material, though, Popular Manipulations is purely life-affirming rock music, bursting with energy that cuts through the darkness of the world that surrounds us. "We're a much better distillation of who we wish to be as a band," Grote reflects on the journey that has led the Districts to this point. "We've figured out how to distill the things we've been trying to accomplish as a band, musically and lyrically. We've always viewed making music as something we're trying to do better the whole time." Mission accomplished.

Pictureplane, Girl Pusher - Baby's All Right
August 14, 2017 - New York

Travis Egedy, a.k.a. Pictureplane, made his name chasing unpopular realities and alternate truths across various media. His gallery works, shown on both sides of the pond, collide familiar with fringe. His Alien Body clothing line offers a stylized study of symbology, the occult, and societal decay. And his music - blissed yet shadowy, swirling up vintage strains of house, hip-hop, and noise - treats electronics not as uncannily artificial, but as extensions of our more magical selves. One could, if one was open to such things, visualize the Brooklyn-based artist's albums and their wild live performances as pathways to a rarer form of realness. Because while the Good Show tells us to "Trust No One," exceptions are granted to men with X-Files tattoos. Egedy came into his own while in Denver, Colorado. He had been pursuing a BFA in painting at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design, but his day-to-day existence had become the medium. He lived in the legendary Rhinoceropolis warehouse, and helped convert that junkyard-adjacent DIY venue into the hub for the city's expanding art-punk underground. In that space, his music evolved fast, and Pictureplane was born into a dank stew of ha... (read more)

Daniel Reichard in 'Mr. Blue Sky' - Birdland
August 14, 2017 - New York

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is excited to welcome back Daniel Reichard for his new summertime club act, "Mr. Blue Sky" on August 14th at 7pm. Reichard, who created the role of Bob Gaudio in the Original Broadway Cast of Jersey Boys and currently tours the world as a founding member of the vocal group, "The Midtown Men," will be joined onstage by a full-band, offering an eclectic evening of iconic songs and hilarious stories. "Mr. Blue Sky" is a musical celebration of the summer season, drawing inspiration from the soundtrack of Reichard's childhood. "I was born on a hot June evening, and raised the eighth of nine children, so there were always a lot of different kinds of music playing, especially during the summer months," Reichard recalls. "This show is going to be nostalgic in that way, presenting songs I've enjoyed since I was a child and others that I have grown to understand more deeply as an adult. Beyond the music, I am exploring the broad range of experiences and emotions that summers can bring."

Myrkur - Rough Trade NYC
August 14, 2017 - Brooklyn

Since inception, Danish artist, Myrkur, has been in a class of her own. The one-woman, classically trained, multi-instrumentalist is known for combining the raw, masculine energy of second-wave black metal, with an ethereal, sophisticated virtue. Myrkur composes in epic proportions. Her stunning debut, M, (co-produced by Ulver, with collaborations from members of Mayhem, Nidingr and Arch Enemy), earned Myrkur "Best Hard Rock Album" at the 2015 Gaffa Awards, as well as "Band of the Year" and "Metal Album of the Year" at the High Voltage Awards. She was recognized by Steppeulven (Association of Danish Music Critics), and toured with iconic acts such as Behemoth and Opeth, and played Hellfest, Graspop and Wacken Open Air Festival. But after taking her music around the world, Myrkur returned to Denmark successful, yet drained. Like a marriage of King Diamond's 'Them' with Tchaikovsky's 'Swan Lake', Mareridt is a carefully composed concept freed from genre. It flows between English and Danish, from guttural growls charged with testosterone, to emotive feminine hymns and kulning. The eleven-tracks sweep into one another like a soundtrack designed to guide the listener through emoti... (read more)

Ariel's Bday W/ Baked, Weeping Icon, Dumb Wolves, Long Neck - Sunnyvale
August 14, 2017 - New York

Despite only having released one record, Baked's been around the block. The members have close connections to the DIY scene, having worked at Brooklyn's beloved underground venue Shea Stadium and performed with the likes of Lost Boy ? and Titus Andronicus. It was with 2014's Debt, however, that the band really began making a name for themselves. That album was a mindfully crafted collection of songs that eschewed genre restrictions while remaining tightly and confidently Baked. Two years later, it's clear the now-five-piece hasn't lost that open-minded edge as they present their sophomore album, Farnham. The 12-track effort dips into proto-punk ("'You Know San Francisco, Don't You?'"), swirling shoegaze ("Stuck at Iron Mountain"), and even outlaw country balladry ("Two-Thousandths"). Sometimes it all happens at once, as on the standout "Stay". Whatever genre they're messing around in, though, they do it with an unhurried care that allows the heavy layers of sound to build atop each other without collapsing under the weight. -- Consequence of Sound

The Roosevelts Holy Ghost Tent Revival - Mercury Lounge
August 15, 2017 - New York

We are The Roosevelts: America's Own Indie-Rock Act The Roosevelts lead singer James Mason muses on the birth of their name: "It was Presidents' Day. It was our first day in the studio. We had the songs, but we didn't have a name. There were two of them, and two of us. – I like to think they would have been fans of our music." As one half of the electric duo along with lead guitarist Jason Kloess, the two brothers – in song, not blood (though maybe beards) – carved a distinctive niche on the renowned live music scene of Austin, Texas, before their recent move to the music industry's "third coast" – Nashville, Tennessee. Together, the songsmiths cultivated a sound that's a little bluesy, a little bit folky, and a little bit rock 'n' roll. Sure, there's some mandolin in there, but most importantly, it's just heartfelt, genuine music that belongs to them alone, not any genre. When forced to give it a name, the boys will tell you it's "harmony-driven American rock with a 70s sensibility." Still, some tastemakers are describing their sound as "warm, rootsy pop." Ultimately, you might have to decide for yourself. The Roosevelts are a "live" band if there ever was one. 2016 f... (read more)

El Ten Eleven featuring Emile Mosseri - Rough Trade NYC
August 15, 2017 - Brooklyn

El Ten Eleven has been two people making instrumental music from the start. Together Kristian Dunn (bass/guitars) and Tim Fogarty (drums) have released six full-length albums, an EP, a remix record and a mixtape. The process of El Ten Eleven has always been of reinvention with each release, providing a canvas of sounds and singular execution to each album, track and layer. There is something exciting about a duo, both for the band and their cult-like fan base. They create eloquently designed compositions, layers of augmented bass and drums that are stacked and sound like a quintet or, often times, an atmospheric orchestra. El Ten Eleven wrote and recorded with Mosseri and are very pleased to announce their first-ever vocal collaboration release: Unusable Love. An EP whose four songs form an illustrated collage, merging El Ten Eleven instrumentals with vocals, to create a body of music entirely unexpected. Pete International Airport is the brain child of Peter G. Holmström. It's name is borrowed from a song title by his other band, The Dandy Warhols. Pete International Airport's new album, Safer With The Wolves..., is a meticulously crafted psyche rock journey into the d... (read more)

Jeremy Zucker - Mercury Lounge
August 16, 2017 - New York

Before entrancing listeners across the world, 21-year-old singer, songwriter, and producer Jeremy Zucker had been quietly carving out his distinct sound from a bedroom in suburban New Jersey. A fusion of organic airy beats, lush soundtrackstyle soundscapes, and biting tumblr-worthy lyricism, Zucker's catalog is eclectic: equally care-free and effortless as it is introspectively cathartic. A self-described "social introvert," Zucker cites Jon Bellion, Blackbear, EDEN, Bon Iver, and Wet among his strongest influences. In the summer of 2015, Zucker released his first official EP entitled "Beach Island." The project saw a small amount of success and from there Zucker steadily began to build a dedicated fan base. Later that year he released a stream of singles that would eventually be packaged together as an EP titled "Breathe." The project's breakout single "Bout It" quickly garnered millions of streams as it organically spread across Soundcloud and Spotify, drawing the attention of curators and fans across the world. In 2016 Zucker released his third EP, "Motions," which featured "Heavy," a song that was later remixed by the recording artist Blackbear who reached out to Jeremy afte... (read more)

The Districts - Bowery Ballroom
August 16, 2017 - New York

It's not uncommon for musicians to grow and evolve between releases -- but even by those standards, the Districts' Popular Manipulations is stunning. The total electric charge of Popular Manipulations is just the latest evolution for the impressively young quartet, whose founding members -- vocalist/guitarist Rob Grote, bassist Connor Jacobus, and drummer Braden Lawrence -- have known each other since attending grade school together in the Pennsylvania town of Lititz. After deciding to form a band in high school, the Districts gigged hard in the tri-state area, releasing a slew of promising material (including the rootsy 2012 debut Telephone) before catching the eye of venerable indie Fat Possum. 2015's A Flourish and a Spoil found the band refining their embryonic sound with veteran producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Kurt Vile) ... Courtesy Tier Yankee Longstraw - Rough Trade NYC
August 16, 2017 - Brooklyn

Courtesy Tier is always a surprise, sometimes even to themselves. Layton (drums) and Omer (guitar) have been playing together for the last seven years, but they weren't always a duo. As members came and went, they perpetually conceptualized themselves as a four and sometimes six piece band. Then, during their second winter in New York, the boys had run out of other band members. Regrouping in a closet size practice space under the Smith Street overpass, they finally had enough room to rehearse, and they liked the sound. By the following summer they were ready to record, but a New York budget requires some finagling. With three mic's in a 7x7 room, "The Resolution" was born. Yankee Longstraw is a New York based rock band consisting of Andrew Krolikowski, Derek Smith, Gary O'Keefe, and Jason Briggs.

God Tiny, the Lounge Act, Looms, the '94 Knicks - Sunnyvale
August 16, 2017 - New York

"Brooklyn's psychedelic/blues/garage rockers God Tiny are releasing their new album The Space Inside Your Head on 5/26. They've got all the fuzzed-out guitars, background organs, and blues melodies you need for this kind of stuff, channeling anything from Savoy Brown and Spooky Tooth to Duane Allman riffs to MK II era Deep Purple to Jack White. That's God Tiny's bread and butter, but they're not content to stick to one sound. "Weaves the Flow" sounds like a modern update of "The Weight," "Wet Paint" is a prog-metal trip that sorta sounds like Pallbearer meets Alice In Chains meets Sabbath, and "Awaken" kinda sounds like Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" on acid. God Tiny know how to pull this stuff off and bring all these sounds together for a cohesive record" - Brooklyn Vegan "Dueling, clean guitars, raucous drums, and sentimental vocals, The Lounge Act makes a lot happen from seemingly almost nothing. With songs that take plenty of twists and turns before arriving, tracks like 'Julie' and 'For What It's Worth' reveal an often ignored potential for straightforward rock ensembles. "Doom are, without a doubt, one of the most pissed off, relentlessly intense bands of the last 30 years – not to mention one of the most original." -Metalinjection.net Green Beret "Boston has never had a shortage of great punk and hardcore, but lately the shit has just blown up there, and add GREEN BERET to the list. I remember when I listened to the first few FUCKED UP singles, and it sounded like I was listening to hardcore but then when I paid attention to the songs it was clear that I was just blasting good old fashioned punk rock....well GREEN BERET comes off like a fast catchy punk band, but when you dig into these tunes, you'll find raging fist in the air käng hiding beneath the clean guitars and garage tinged recording. Subversive Rite Described as "that dude who looks mad opening tecates for a living and the blonde dude who played loud guitar in that one band now plays bass".

In the Valley Below - Mercury Lounge
August 17, 2017 - New York

For In the Valley Below's Jeffrey Jacob and Angela Gail, their Elephant EP represents the latest chapter in an ongoing relationship that is rooted in both the music they create and the family which has followed. Relocated from their tiny, one-bedroom Echo Park apartment in Los Angeles, the now-married pair have moved to a 93-year-old house they bought in Grand Rapids, MI. There, they installed a basement studio that served as the birthplace for their next collection of songs to be released on acclaimed Bay Area, ADA-distributed indie Bright Antenna, three years after The Belt and its worldwide alternative hit, "Peaches," was released. "After spending three years on the road, we wanted a place to come home to that was quiet, and not so claustrophobic," says Angela about the decision to flee L.A. "We found Grand Rapids to be a city full of creative energy, fresh air, and rough edges. It's been inspiring. A lot of people we've met here migrated at the same time we did from the West Coast. Maybe it's some kind of human instinct." Solid touring in Europe and the US included festivals like Reading and Leeds, Austin City Limits, Rock En Seine and more. Appearances on The Late Show wit... Con Brio, Mamarazzi - Mercury Lounge
August 17, 2017 - New York

The night before Con Brio headed into the studio to record their first full-length album, 23-year-old Ziek McCarter had a dream. In it, the singer received a visit from his father, an Army veteran who died at the hands of East Texas police in 2011. His father delivered an invitation: Come with me to paradise. McCarter woke up with a song in his bones. "It was one of the most spiritual moments of my life," he recalls. It was up to him, he knew, to rise above injustice, and to perform in a way that lifted up those around him as well. To make Con Brio's music a place of serenity, compassion -- even euphoria -- right here on earth. Paradise, which saw the San Francisco band teaming with legendary producer Mario Caldato Jr. (Beastie Boys, Beck, Seu Jorge), is the result: a declaration of independence you can dance to; an assertion of what can happen when the human spirit is truly free. Formed in 2013, Con Brio is the offspring of seven musicians with diverse backgrounds but a shared love for the vibrant Bay Area funk and psychedelic-soul sound pioneered by groups like Sly & the Family Stone. By 2015, when the band self-produced their debut EP, Kiss the Sun, Con Brio had alre... (read more)

John Maus+Gary War - Monty Hall
August 17, 2017 - New York

Third album 'We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves' breaks new ground for Maus. The shirt pulling and air punching of his impassioned live performance is finally captured in all its frenzied appeal alongside a tender inner space. After stretching muscles with opener "Streetlight", arpeggiators bubble up to new levels with "Quantum Leap", a song full of dead zones, glancing slaps and oscillating solos. "Heart to heart, mind to mind, we are the ones who seem to travel through time," intones Maus resolutely through the mist. John's lyrics are as likely to touch upon themes of Cronenberg gore just as much as the musings of Jacques Rancière. It's this no-brow approach that makes things interesting, casting Maus as a savant and allowing his music to startle us in ways whereby we open up to the unimaginable. John's preoccupation with truth, love and eternity are perfectly suited to this treatment as seen with "And The Rain" and the softly cascading "Keep Pushing On". The songs are devastatingly catchy, saturated with keyboards and overflowing with Maus' allegorical summons. The hypnotic fugue "We Can Break Through" treads new territories into minimalism for Maus, seeing ... (read more)

Formed in 2009 out of a mutual love of the music from the 50s and 60s, FKB was winning over fans while still in high school with their eclectic early performances that paid homage to their heroes like Elvis, The Beatles, and The Beach Boys.

The Nude Party [Residency Night 1] Roya - Baby's All Right
August 17, 2017 - New York

The Nude Party congealed as one unit in the southern mountain town of Boone, NC in 2013 and gained their namesake very literally. Bonded by isolation, house party debauchery, a religion based on pushing the limits of bad taste, and a precocious predisposition towards the Kinks, the Animals and the Velvets, they have burgeoned into a rock and roll act to be reckoned with. As the hysteria at their local shows steadily increases, so does their reputation with local law enforcement, forcing them daily more to seek employment anywhere but home. While snooping cops seeking to stamp out indiscriminate behavior scour the borders of their homestead the Nude Ranch, the group has prodigally exiled themselves and are staying scarce with a string of self booked tours and one night stands which have linked them up with with such likes as The Growlers, The Oblivians, La Luz, Night Beats, and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. Their stripped down and bare bone sound, akin to the British Invasion being transplanted back into the Carolina mountains, has so far proven to have been unrecordable… until now. The secret? Sticking to the obvious and going down into a sweaty basement with a few mics, ... (read more)

Nina Diaz - Rough Trade NYC
August 17, 2017 - Brooklyn

Almost two decades ago, on January 9, 1998, musician Nina Diaz was heartbroken to learn her grandmother had passed away. Exactly 15 years later, on that same date, Nina was writing new material when she felt someone watching over her. "I was using that night and felt this crazy energy," says Nina, who had been battling substance and drug addiction for years. She did this, unassumingly, while fronting Girl in a Coma, the critically hailed indie-punk band that was famously nurtured by Joan Jett, had opened for Morrissey and Tegan and Sara, and earned multiple Independent Music Awards. Adds Nina, "I knew it was my grandmother." Along the way, many demons were exorcised. Upon first listen, "Queen Beats King" seems to be a wistful, '80s synth-take. "But it's actually about me being enchanted by a suave guy—then all of a sudden, I'm in hell. Then I find a light. I get myself out of it." She continues to explore that resolve with "For You," about surrendering to post-sobriety spirituality, and the punk-cabaret "Rebirth." "I'm back from the dead / Like I told you friend / I will not love you till you are my enemy," she sings. "It became a mantra," Nina says. "When you know yourself, tha... (read more)

Maggie Rogers - Brooklyn Steel
Through August 17, 2017 - New York

Dear listening ears/reading eyes, For a long time I've introduced myself as a banjo player from the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I'm a hiker and an environmentalist. I'm an optimist. I'm loud. I'm still those things, but I went quiet for a few years. I cut my long hair short. I got a cat named Cat Stevens. I fell in love. I moved to New York, to France, and back. Inevitably, I found my space in the place between knowing who I was and finding out who I am. I'm a producer, songwriter, and performer from Brooklyn. I'm an optimist. I'm a feminist. I'm loud when I laugh. I'm freckled. I love my old jeans. I love pink eye-shadow. I cry when I dance sometimes. I feel a lot, maybe too much, but in a song it always seems to be just enough. The thing about songs is that no matter how far away I go, or how long I stay away, they always seem to find me. And as wild and unpredictable as they are, I've learned to trust them. I write to feel and sing 'til I feel a new way. I love the music most when it makes me feel human. Feet on the ground, soft hair, standing with my friends and in three parts, singing. Feet off the ground, hair wild, moving to that perfect pulse that mimics yo... (read more)

Forth Wanderers "Ava Trilling, the stunning vocalist of this Montclair slacker outfit, graduated from high school last June. Forth Wanderers got their start with a self-released E.P., which quickly caught the attention of Lorde and, later, Father/Daughter Records. Few bands enjoy such an endearingly short path to fame, where news of your début album may appear in your campus paper: Ben Guterl, the band's co-founder and primary songwriter, bounced between the studio and junior-year seminars, and described his band's quick rise to the Oberlin Review as "kind of Zula is the experimental pop project of cousins Nate and Henry Terepka. Their music puts it's listener in an almost hypnotic dream state through the use of synthesizers, soothing vocal harmonies, roaring guitars, and off beat drum patterns.
