Protomartyr+the Gotobeds, Big Quiet - Monty Hall
September 15, 2017 - New York

I asked Joe Casey once why he chose to start his first band with a group of guys roughly ten years his junior. His answer was simple: He needed them, needed this, needed Protomartyr. He didn't want to end up singing classic rock covers in a carport or dive bar one night a week. At 35, with no musical background and crippling stage fright, he needed friends who were young and hearty enough to want to write and record and practice and tour and be heard as badly as he did then. He'd just lost his father to an unexpected heart attack, and his heartbroken mother to the beginnings of Alzheimer's shortly thereafter. He'd come to understand, all too intimately, how brutal and finite a life can be. Consider then the urgency with which he joined his bandmates—guitarist Greg Ahee, drummer Alex Leonard, and bassist Scott Davidson, fellow alums of the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy—for the first time, in a basement full of unsuspecting onlookers. Consider the urgency with which they've approached everything since—three albums in three years, each more extraordinary and rewarding than the last. This music is inherently, unassumingly high stakes. I can think of no other band... (read more)

High Waisted, Fascinator - Garcia's at The Capitol Theatre
September 15, 2017 - New York

Quirky 60's garage rock is re-imagined from the nose of a surfboard, making High Waisted feel like a psychedelic lullaby. NYC surf rockers with pop sensibilities and an affliction for rock and roll. They've been called NME Magazine's "buzz band to watch," declared "the ultimate party band" by GQ and have received praise from Consequence of Sound, Noisey, and Paste. With their sophomore album underway, the band released an interactive 360 degree music video for their track "Hey Hey" in collaboration with Refinery29, performed a live session at Nylon Magazine, as well as a stripped down set for Sofar Sounds. Their debut album, "On Ludlow" was recorded at Dreamland Studio in Woodstock, NY, with renowned producer Bryan Pugh. Joseph - Music Hall of Williamsburg
September 15, 2017 - Brooklyn

I'M ALONE, NO YOU'RE NOT There is nothing like the sound of siblings singing together. Whether it's the Beach Boys or the Everly Brothers—or, more recently, First Aid Kit—absorbing the same breathing rhythms and speech patterns adds an element to vocal harmonies that can be pure magic. With the release of I'm Alone, No You're Not, the mesmerizing, hypnotic sound of the trio known as Joseph—made up of sisters Allison, Meegan, and Natalie Closner—joins this elite company. "It's just second nature, like a fifth limb that's already on you," says first-born Natalie. "There's an ability to anticipate what's going to happen and blend with it. When Meegan and Allison sing, they know exactly what I'm going to do and when." But the Closners didn't actually start singing together when they were growing up in Oregon, the children of artistic parents (their dad was a jazz singer and drummer, their mom a theater teacher). Natalie was the performer—"the older sister who stood on the edge of the fireplace and told everyone, 'Watch me!,'" she says. Twins Meegan and Allison stayed out of her lane, joining in for their mother's musical theater productions but otherwise avoiding the spotlight... (read more)

Nora Chipaumire #Punk - Crossing The Line Festival
Through September 15, 2017 - New York

Iconoclastic choreographer Nora Chipaumire stages a raw concert inspired by 1970s independent music, Americana, and her own formative years in Zimbabwe in the 70–90's. Riffing on an iconic Patti Smith lyric and a punk perspective on the future, #PUNK paints a riotous sonic and visual landscape with voice, dance, installation, and performance. #PUNK is the first part of a triptych titled #PUNK 100% POP*NIGGA, a live performance album that confronts and celebrates three sonic ideologies: punk, pop, and rumba, explored through the radical artists Patti Smith, Grace Jones, and Rit Nzele. Born in Mutare, Zimbabwe and based in NYC, Nora Chipaumire uses her work to challenge and embrace stereotypes of the African black body. She seeks to question how status and power are experienced and presented, working within modes of portraiture, self-portraiture, and biography. She was awarded a 2015 Doris Duke Artist award and is a three-time BESSIE award winner. Chipaumire's most recent performance work, portrait of myself as my -f-a-t-h-e-r (2015) has toured in Africa, Europe and the US, and her debut film, Afro Promo #1 King Lady (2016, commissioned by Montclair State University ) was featured in... In addition to his solo recordings and regular international touring, Newman began composing and scoring for films in the 1980s. The highly praised 2008 Harps and Angels was Newman's first album of new material since 1999. Tom Rush and Livingston Taylor - SOPAC

Tom Rush, a pioneer of the urban Folk movement that shaped the music of the '60s and the renaissance of the '80s and '90s, can rightfully take his place as a living legend. The Afghan Whigs+Har Mar Superstar - Brooklyn Steel
September 16, 2017 - New York

"Cleromancy" isn't a word one normally finds in rock lyrics. Then again, In Spades – the forthcoming album by The Afghan Whigs, from which the new song "Oriole" hails – is defined only by its own mystical inner logic. The term means to divine, in a supernatural manner, a prediction of destiny from the random casting of lots: the throwing of dice, picking a card from a deck. From its evocative cover art to the troubled spirits haunting the words, In Spades casts a spell that challenges the listener to unpack its dark metaphors and spectral imagery. "It's a spooky record," notes Greg Dulli, Afghan Whigs' songwriter and frontman. "I like that it's veiled. It's not a concept album per se, but as I began to assemble it, I saw an arc and followed it. To me it's about memory – in particular, how quickly life and memory can blur together." On the one hand, In Spades is as quintessentially Afghan Whigs as anything the group has ever done – fulfilling its original mandate to explore the missing link between howling Midwestern punk like Die Kreuzen and Hüsker Dü, The Temptations' psychedelic soul symphonies, and the expansive hard rock tapestries of Led Zeppelin and Lynyrd Skynyrd. At the ... (read more)

Middle Kids - Music Hall of Williamsburg
September 16, 2017 - Brooklyn

Twenty-plus years of stories, twenty-plus years of perfecting music's craft, Ski Lodge's Big Heart is exactly what a debut record should be: the culmination of a creative force's life on this planet. Andrew Marr, the multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter behind Ski Lodge, has created a deeply personal record that overflows with lush melodies and insatiably catchy choruses. His songs occasionally deal with dark matters—infidelity, painful break-ups, loneliness, disjointed father-son dynamics—but Marr bathes them in a blissful light ripe for sing-alongs. "I try to write songs honestly, and a lot of the things going on in my head that I struggle with might be deemed 'dark,' but I don't think that means I can't sing about them in a way that is musically upbeat or poppy," Marr says, from his home in New York City. It's a dichotomy that also translates to Marr's choice for musical moniker. He explains the name Ski Lodge "evoked an image of being warm by a fire, alone or with friends, while outside exists the cold and cruel winter."

Sublime with Rome and the Offspring - New York City Theatre
September 16, 2017 - Wantagh

Born out of the ashes of previous group Sublime, Sublime with Rome (the 'Rome' comes from guitarist Rome Ramirez) play fast, irreverent ska revival, that brings in a whole load of punk and pop influences. They have two albums to their name, the latest of which was 2015's Sirens, which featured the singles 'Wherever You Go', and the title track. The days of mainstream domination for ska-punk may be over (think No Doubt, Big Fish) but Sublime with Rome are keeping the spirit of the genre alive. And as a live act, they kick some serious butt. They're joined on these dates by The Offspring, the fellow ska revivalists who hit it huge in the 1990s with a string of classic singles, like 'Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)' and 'Come Out and Play', and can count themselves as one of the best-selling punk acts of all time.

Scorpions and Megadeth - New York City Theatre
September 16, 2017 - New York

German grand wizards of metal Scorpions are joining forces with thrash metal titans Megadeth for a scorching tour that'll shake the very foundations of the arenas they'll be filling. The Crazy World Tour references Scorpions' 1990 album, which was released at the end of the Cold War - the band couldn't be dusting off their axes and political anthems at a better time. It's time to stand together and rock! Riding the first tidal wave of 70s heavy metal, Scorpions marked themselves as a force to be reckoned with with the release of the ever popular classic Rock You Like A Hurricane, selling 22 million records to date. A decade after their inception, Megadeth took up the metal call, and both bands have remained classic rock stalwarts with sold out world tours and consistent album releases over the decades.

At only 25, the New Zealand born multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer is a rare talent whose distinct take on soul captures a sonic and emotional awareness many artists spend their entire careers chasing. 'Sorceress', the first single taken from his forthcoming album, sees Jordan edging beyond the peripheries of the genial, often sun-flecked sound his fans have come to know him for. "It's about how the ego can fully control the way you act and perceive life," he says. Jordan's whirlwind rise has been a predominately solo effort. His exceptional musical ability (he writes, sings and plays most of the instrumentation on his records himself) is accompanied by an unrelenting - yet agreeably humble - ambition. His aptitude and knack for songwriting caught the attention of tastemakers following the release of his 2014 EP "Groove Curse". His self-released debut album "Cloak" (2016) lit the blue touch paper, earning him a coveted set at Pitchfork Avant-Garde Block Party 2016 and supports for the likes of Jamie Woon and NAO. Drawing early support from the Soulection crew, he has collaborated with Taku, Tom Misch... (read more)

Dermot Kennedy - Music Hall of Williamsburg
September 17, 2017 - Brooklyn

Life and death. Joy and pain. Love and loss. Dermot Kennedy has always been fascinated by extremes. On his brilliant debut EP, 'Doves & Ravens,' the young Dubliner draws inspiration from all the moments of brightness and darkness this world has to offer, crafting music that's at once soaring and intimate, stripped-back and explosive. Stuttery hip-hop and R&B-influenced percussion underpins his weathered vocals as he combines organic and electronic elements into an arresting, emotional blend that calls to mind the adventurous arrangements of Bon Iver, James Blake, and James Vincent McMorrow. Rich beyond just its production, the EP showcases Kennedy as a writer in possession of a sophistication well beyond his 25 years. He pens lyrics with a poet's eye and a rapper's precision, conjuring vivid imagery and transfixing audiences with the unique rhythm and flow of his soulful delivery. "I think reading poetry and listening to hip hop offer a lot of the same rewards," reflects Kennedy. "The good rappers are so honest, and in my opinion they deserve to be viewed as poets. Regardless of the form, though, I just feed off of anyone who's expressing themselves and sharing their feelings... (read more)

A double jolt of adrenaline and sugar to inspire the most helicoptered of tots to play hooky and go shred an ax. For those about to love School of Rock: We salute you." Hoping to educate us once again, Andrew Lloyd-Webber returns to Broadway with a brand-new show! Adapted from the 2003 Jack Black movie of the same name, School of Rock features bumbling lead character Dewey Finn, played by Eric Petersen (Shrek The Musical), the hilarious slacker with rock stardom on his mind. Not since 1971 has Andrew Lloyd-Webber launched a show on Broadway before London's West End! This new production, which mixes songs from the movie with brand new songs by the iconic composer and lyricist Glenn Slater, is a rockin' spectacular!
