Grand Ole Opera Concert Series - Pioneer Works
July 14, 2017 - Red Hook

Pioneer Works is pleased to present Grand Ole Opera, a performative exhibition by Tennessee-born artists Willie Stewart and Brent Stewart. This post-modern opera marks the Stewarts' institutional debut in the United States. In 1944, country music star Bob Wills appalled purists when he insisted on performing his set with drums at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Drums marked an iconoclastic break with tradition which threatened the hallowed "Home of American Music." Inspired by Wills, the Stewarts' Grand Ole Opera stages immersive theatrical installations that recreate their Southern heritage and childhood experiences, paying homage while complicating and transgressing the clichés of the American South. June 11: Angel Deradoorian at Second Sunday June 23: Lightning Bolt July 7: Wolf Eyes, Jackie Lynn, Dreamcrusher July 14: Sleep July 15: Sleep July 19: Fushitsusha July 20: Fushitsusha July 21: Hank Wood and the Hammerheads July 28: Bob Bellerue, Pedestrian Deposit July 29: The Body, Author & Punisher, Moor Mother

WIL (HELMS | LIAMS) BURG - National Sawdust
July 15, 2017 - Brooklyn

The Wil(helms | liams)burg project is a two-year cultural and artistic exchange with composers from Brooklyn's Williamsburg and Hamburg's Wilhelmsburg. After successful Hamburg concerts in June in the citywide 48h Wilhelmsburg and blurred edges festivals, Wil(helms | liams)burg comes to Brooklyn’s National Sawdust as part of the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival. Presenting a program of instrumental performance, live electronics, dance, political performance art, and an interactive soundwalk, this concert includes works by Hamburg’s Xiao Fu, Georg Hajdu, Carlos Andrés Rico, and Jacob Sello, and Brooklyn’s Howie Kenty, Dafna Naphtali, and Hans Tammen. BACKGROUND: Hamburg and New York, in addition to the historic HAPAG line and a direct flight route, also connect two districts with similar-sounding names on the "wrong" side of the Elbe and East rivers: Wilhelmsburg and Williamsburg. As Williamsburg has now become a cultural center of Brooklyn, Hamburg's Elbinsel is now ready to do the same. Some parallels between the two neighborhoods are indeed striking: long-forgotten workers' quarters on the outskirts, port industry and immigration influences, and the popularity of... (read more)
