Dirty Martini & The New Burlesque - Highline Ballroom
April 16, 2011 -

Hosted By James Habacker "The Godfather of the New Burlesque" appaearing as MEL FRYE Gary Beeber's brilliant feature documentary film: DIRTY MARTINI AND THE NEW BURLESQUE, offers a rare insight into New York's burlesque scene, and the live performances are INCREDIBLE! The film which won "Best Documentary Feature" at the 2010 Coney Island Film Festival features some of the best that burlesque has to offer: Dirty Martini, World Famous *BOB*, Jo Weldon, Tigger!, Bunny Love, and Gal Friday, and these stars will all share the stage for a one-night only performance after the screening, hosted by the inestimable MC James Habacker as Mel Frye. The film explores the outrageous world of the performers who created the "new burlesque" scene in New York City. The movie's seductiveness comes from its sexy acts as well as its dark exploration of the performers' struggle to pay their bills, quest for stable love relationships and inability to envision the future after burlesque. The relationship between sex work, burlesque and feminism are discussed. As a classically trained dancer, Dirty Martini has struggled since childhood to overcome criticism of her size. Dirty has gained international recognition for her brilliant performances, costumes and persona. In 2004 she was crowned "Miss Exotic World" in Las Vegas which is the highest honor one can achieve in the burlesque world. Vintage footage of legendary burlesque influences such as Tura Satana, Lili St Cyr, Dixie Evans, Sally Rand and Dee Milo are shown performing the sexy acts they originally created, and are contrasted with Dirty Martini's updated versions of these classics. The "new burlesque," is not a fad and is much more than just vintage nudie cuties brought to life. It is performance art, modern dance, and political satire. It is the new punk rock. DON'T?MISS?IT!

They've probably played as many shows as any rock band in history, they've released numerous albums, usually to positive critical response, and they've shared stages with some of the biggest bands of the 70s. From Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, "The Twelves" were formed by the duo João Miguel and Luciano Oliveira back in 2005. The name came from the strange coincidence of their birth dates: twelve of july of 1980. The breakthrough for The Twelves came in July of 2007 when they remixed the track "Boyz" from M.I.A's sophomore album, Kala. The reworked track with an added club feel resulted in one of the most talked about remixes of 2007. The blog coverage surrounding the remix was extensive and eventually the track started to pop up in sets from high profile djs around the world, including Kissy Sell Out, who played it on BBC's "In New Djs We Trust" series. The duo followed "Boyz" with equally well received remixes for Asobi Seksu and Erlend Oye, both of which were featured on a number of blogs and music related sites. This stream of good tracks soon caught the attention of a number of labels, including Modular Records (home of Cut Copy, Klaxons and others) who comissioned a "Twelves" remix of the song "Get Lucky" by New Young Pony club. The resulting remix was released alongside reworkings from household names like MSTRKRFT and Who Made Who, and received excellent reviews. Press coverage in Brazil soon started to pick up, with interviews on Newspapers and magazines. The coverage led to appearances in festivals and concerts alongside names like Diplo, LCD Soundsystem, She Wants Revenge, Van She and Phoenix. The sound of the duo brings influences from many genres. Among the most influential to their sound are Daft Punk, Justice, Röyksopp, Vitalic, Simian Mobile Disco, MSTRKRFT, Clor, Cut Copy and Goldfrapp. Their live show is a unique blend of live keyboards, drum machines, mash-ups and remixing on the fly. Always trying to improvise as much as possible.

Terrence McManus's Transcendental Numbers CD Release Concert - Cornelia Street Cafe
April 21, 2011 -

Terrence McManus-guitar; Mark Helias-bass; Gerry Hemingway-drums. An excerpt from the liner notes of Transcendental Numbers: "Over the past few years I have become increasingly more interested in developing a personal sonic language on the guitar, in an attempt to do things that were not possible through standard ways of playing the guitar. As I continue to consider directions in sound, it is very important to me to maintain the link to my roots and interests in the traditional aspects of improvised performance. This recording captures a moment of synthesis between two worlds: Sound creation, intermingled with a loosely traditional style of trio improvisation. For a guitarist, the guitar/bass/drums trio format is perhaps the most widely utilized style, and for good reason. The setting allows the guitar considerable freedom with harmony and melody, and the transparency of the guitar permits a certain amount of “air” to be present, developing a looseness where the instruments function more conversationally. No matter what instrumentation I might be involved in, I am continually drawn back to the guitar trio. Its possibilities and its connection to the lineage of the guitar are too tempting to pass up. In my own case, I have had a tendency when thinking about my own role in a trio with bass and drums to be particularly influenced by non-guitar instrumentation trio settings." Transcendental Numbers review except from The New York City Jazz Record: “McManus seems to be quietly assembling a cogent guitar vocabulary from the ground up, intent on forging a boldly resonant instrumental personality like, say, Harry Partch: a new brand of rare earthiness.” Online release info: www.nobusinessrecords.com/NBCD27.php Official website for Terrence McManus: www.terrence-mcmanus.com For more information please email: terrence@terrence-mcmanus.com "McManus is one of New York's latest guitar heroes" -allaboutjazz.com Guitarist Terrence McManus has made a name for himself in the jazz and improvised/contemporary music scene, with an unmistakable sound and truly new approach to the guitar. Described as "a visionary guitarist" by guitar icon Gene Bertoncini, Terrence's unique style and approach have also been heralded by guitar greats Bill Frisell and John Abercrombie. He has performed with artists including John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Tim Berne, and Ellery Eskelin, and his much sought-after sound can be heard in the Gerry Hemingway Quintet, Kermit Driscoll Quartet and Trio, the Herb Robertson Ensemble, the Gerry Hemingway/Terrence McManus Duo, and the John Hebert/Terrence McManus Duo. In 2008, Terrence was featured in the book State of the Axe: Guitar Masters in Photographs and Words, by legendary photographer Ralph Gibson. Terrence was a semi-finalist on classical guitar, in the 2011 Portland Guitar Festival Competition, in Portland, OR. "I am convinced he represents a new voice on the instrument." -Gerry Hemingway "All great guitarists find a voice inside the instrument, but Terrence McManus hit on an entirely new language." -Gambit (New Orleans) "...looming formations of rocky noise to a bracing, pointilistic spray,..." -DownBeat "...rich, unconscious empathy......language that takes in everything from free and Noise to the cheery alt rock" -The Wire (UK) "Each of these five brief tracks are sketches of ideas and platforms for McManus' improvisations and extended techniques. Technique, as they say, on loan from God." -allaboutjazz.com _______________________________________________ Terrence McManus guitarist-composer-sound artist terrence@terrence-mcmanus.com website: http://terrence-mcmanus.com twitter: http://twitter.com/terrencemcmanus facebook: http://facebook.com/terrencemcmanusguitarist youtube: http://youtube.com/weirdtones _______________________________________________

April 22, 2011 -

Reserved VIP booths on floor avail for 4 + 6 people - $45 per ticket - Must buy entire booth. A booth for 4 = $180 - A booth for 6 = $270 Melanie is best known for her hits, 'Brand New Key', 'Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)', and 'Look What They've Done To My Song, Ma' - selling over 25 million records over the course of her career. The inspiration for her signature classic "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" apparently arose from the Woodstock audience lighting candles during her set. A gospel-boosted genuine one-off, that combined high drama with Melanie's trademark hippy sincerity, the recording became a hit in both Europe and the USA in the spring and summer of 1970. It was on her own label that she scored her biggest US hit with the novelty-sounding 1972 number one, "Brand New Key" (also known as "The Roller Skate Song"). "Brand New Key" was featured in the 1997 movie Boogie Nights and sold over three million copies worldwide. The follow-up single to "Brand New Key" was "Ring The Living Bell". To compete with this release, Melanie's former record company released "The Nickel Song" (a song she had recorded whilst still signed to Buddah). Both songs were simultaneous Top 40 hits whilst 'Brand New Key' was still on the charts - setting a record for the first female performer to have three Top 40 hits concurrently. Melanie was awarded Billboard's #1 Top Female Vocalist for 1972.

The phenomenon known as Sublime, arguably the most energetic, original and uniquely eclectic band to emerge from any scene, anywhere, ended with the untimely death of lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Brad Nowell in May of 1996. But encompassing the sense of place and purpose long associated with Sublime's music, Badfish, a Tribute to Sublime continues to channel the spirit of Sublime with a fury not felt for some time. What separates Badfish from other tribute bands is that they have replicated Sublime's essence, developing a scene and dedicated following most commonly reserved for label-driven, mainstream acts.
