BARRINGTON LEVY - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
August 30, 2011 - New York

Barrington Levy's outstanding career as a top-class reggae vocalist began more than two and a half decades ago. Called reggae's 'Mellow Canary' by virtue of his strong, pure vocal style, he's renowned as the first original singer of the dancehall era, inspiring many imitators en-route. Barrington was born in West Kingston, but spent much time as a youth in Clarendon, where he developed his signature riff by experimenting with different vocalizations and bouncing the sounds off the surrounding hills. In 1975, Barrington recorded his debut track "My Black Girl" with the Mighty Multitude. During these early performances, his singing was often informally recorded and sent to places in England and the U.S. The first foreign release, "A Ya We Deh", was followed by a major hit with "Collie Weed", produced by Junjo Laws for Jah Guidance, and others like "Twenty-One Girls Salute" and "Mind Your Mouth". Producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes discovered him singing on a local sound-system, and wasted no time in taking him to Channel One for the first of many hit singles in 1979. With the Channel One All-Stars - later to form the nucleus of the Roots Radics - laying the rhythms, and Scientist mixing the finished results at King Tubbys, the new singer caused a sensation right from the start, ushering in the dancehall phase at the same time. The follow-up Englishman on Greensleeves established Barrington as the reggae star of the early '80's, spawning hit singles with "Sister Carol", "Look Youthman", "Eventide Fire A Disaster" and "Mary Long Tongue". Again Junjo was the producer, and the third album Robin Hood only served to maintain his already rocketing reputation. In 1983, Levy made a big splash in Great Britain with "Under Mi Sensi", a tune that spent 12 weeks topping their charts. The tune quickly made its way to the States where it became an instant hit. "Under Mi Sensi" also became the basis for the 1985 dancehall mega-hit "Under Mi Sleng Teng" - primarily credited to Wayne "Jammy" Smith (although Barrington actually created the melody). Levy's initial live appearances in England created a sensation, his astonishing self-confidence in his singing talent on stage at venues like the influential "100 Club" in London, enabling him to have audiences in the palm of his hand. "Under Mi Sensi", a formidable and decidedly heavyweight cut which found Barrington wailing with a power and depth unequalled before or since. Immediately the song became a classic, staying in the reggae charts for weeks on end. It was closely followed by "Murderer" for Jah Life, and then Barrington and Jah Screw's "Here I Come" in 1985 which was a national chart-hit through a major label deal with London Records - ultimately leading to his first UK TV appearances, where he sang the pro-ganja anthem "Under Mi Sensi" on Number 73 (a children's television show!). Throughout his professional appearances, Barrington has shared the stage with a veritable who's-who of the reggae and world music scene: Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Dennis Brown, John Holt, Gregory Isaacs, Freddie McGregor, Maxi Priest, Shaggy, Beenie Man, Buju Banton, Bounty Killer, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Lady Saw, Lady G, U2, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Shine, CeCile, Tony Rebel, Garnet Silk, Capleton, Sugar Minott, Coco Tea, Spanner Banner, Little Kirk, Sanchez, Papa San, Mutabaruka... just to name a few. Barrington continues to record and tour extensively throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, and remains Jamaica's #1 headliner. He's currently working on his latest (soon to be released) album, It's About Time, featuring Jamaican hip-hop sensation CeCile, on the hit single "Want You To Know". Barrington Levy is still "Broader than Broadway"; and still a major force on the dancehall scene !!!

Smooth Cruise featuring Pieces Of A Dream - Spirit Cruises
August 31, 2011 -

Join Pieces of a Dream on Wednesday, August 31st for a memorable close to another fantastic Smooth Cruise Season! Keyboardist James Lloyd, drummer Curtis Harmon, and former bassist Cedric Napoleon, founded Pieces of a Dream in Philadelphia in 1975 when the principal members were all teenagers. Lloyd, Harmon and Napoleon, were (and still are) managed by the Harmon's father and uncle, Danny and Bill Harmon. Originally somewhat jazz-oriented, the group has mostly emphasized R&B, although a few jazz numbers are typically included in their performances. Their name is based on Pieces of Dreams, a cover tune by Stanley Turrentine that the group performed. They first started playing throughout the Tri-State area, and were soon featured on Temple University's pioneering jazz radio station, WRTI-FM. Long before the "Young Lions" era of Wynton Marsalis, Lloyd and Harmon were swinging so hard as teenagers that the great Count Basie once proclaimed them "a tough act to follow."

Milkman - Highline Ballroom
September 02, 2011 -

Full dinner menu available / General Admission Standing Room / Limited seating available first come, first serve / All Ages Milkman is the stage alias of Hip-Hop/Dance/Rock music producer Gregg Luskin from San Diego, CA. As a freshman at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Milkman was introduced to various glitch-pop remix artists. After being exposed to this new and upcoming sample-based genre, Milkman spent the remainder of the year learning and improving his own mashup technique. It took Milkman 13 months to complete his debut album Lactose and THC (released January 22, 2008 under self owned production company Milkman Entertainment) and was available to download for free online. Over the course of the next year, the debut album Lactose and THC was downloaded over 26,000 from his website alone and was voted the "#2 Mashup Album of All Time" by DJ Forum. Soon after, Milkman took his music to a more professional level by offering live DJ service- extending the sound of his debut album for a more dance-oriented environment.

In the years following, Milkman expanded his fan base by performing locally in the shore-side college community Isla Vista. As word spread through college campuses around the country and over seas, Milkman's popularity began to grow and was soon headlining performances from coast to coast. Milkman is now regarded as a premiere mashup DJ around the world and regularly performs with A-List artists such as Kid Cudi, Lil' Jon and Three 6 Mafia. Milkman was awarded both "Hottest mashup DJ of 2008" as well as "DJ to watch out for in 2009" by DJ Forum. Prior to digital music production and live DJ performance, Gregg Luskin was the lead guitarist of San Diego based rock quartet A Dead Giveaway under the indie-rock label Pacific Records.

'FOREVER RAY' A Musical Tribute To RAY CHARLES - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
September 03, 2011 - New York

Whitley and the Hard Times Band perform the exciting and uplifting music of Ray Charles, which include a wonderful blend of musical styles which range from Jazz and Blues, to Country and R&B.

The band features a stellar line-up of musicians whose performing credits include:

Ben E. King, Michael McDonald, Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, George Clinton, Prince, Liza Minnelli, Jimmy Vivino, Rod Stewart, Celia Cruz, Aretha Franklin, Tito Puente, The O'Jays, Donna Summers, Temptations, Four Tops, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Frank Sinatra, Lionel Hampton + Vocalist Angela Workman was a Raelette in Ray Charles' band.

From country to blues to jazz to R&B and even funk, Ray Charles set the aesthetic standard for more than five decades, earning plaudits across the globe and setting standards that his legion of fans, in and out of the entertainment industry, aspire to.

More often than not he wasn't called by his name - or even his longtime nickname "Brother Ray"---his is simply "The Genius."

Few artists can claim to have had such a wide ranging impact on the music we love, and even fewer have altered the course of so many musical streams - from his soul-jazz combos to his crucial R&B bands, to his landmark country music recordings, "Modern Sounds in Country Music." Only modesty kept him from saying the obvious - that his name sits at the top of the soul singers list.
