Stravinsky Violin Concerto - New York City Ballet
Through February 04, 2012 -

In 1941, Balanchine choreographed Balustrade for the Ballet Russe to Stravinsky's Violin Concerto in D. When he returned to the score three decades later, he could no longer remember his original choreography. But Balanchine was not at all disturbed by the loss. "What I did then was for then," he said, "and what I wanted to do to this music for our Stravinsky Festival... represented more than 30 years' difference." The new choreography follows the score directly: An opening "Toccata" and a final "Capriccio" enclose two central "Arias," which form contrasting pas de deux for two different couples.

David Garrett - Beacon Theatre
February 04, 2012 - New York

The child of an American mother and a German father, prodigy violin soloist David Garrett, born David Bongartz in Aachen, Germany, reached and surpassed many an important milestone before his matriculation at Juilliard in New York. David's interest in violin began at the age of four, when his older brother received a violin from his father -- who himself was a antique stringed-instrument dealer. A year later, David had already won a competition, and by seven he was playing in public as often as possible. Within five more years, David had gone on to perform with an orchestra (playing Mozart) and at the age of ten made his concert debut. As his teenage years dawned, David had already released two albums and appeared on television. This kind of talent was quickly picked up by Deutsche Grammophone, which offered and signed a contract with the violinist when he was only 14 years old. He graduated from Juilliard in New York in 2004, after having been a student with Itzhak Perlman. David Garrett has performed with many of the world's orchestras, and in 2007 he played with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, touring the United States with the orchestra in 2008. In 2009 he released a self-titled album on the Decca label. The varied repertoire included music from Bizet, a version of 'Dueling Banjos' plus a cover version of Michael Jackson's 'Smooth Criminal'. A year later he returned with Rock Symphonies, an album featuring material from Nirvana, Guns 'N' Roses, and Metallica.

Bill Callahan - Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts
February 08, 2012 -

The deep voice and sardonic delivery bring to mind Johnny Cash or Kris Kristofferson, but it's the inventive lyrics that mark Bill Callahan as an original. Callahan recorded for years under the name Smog, perhaps as a need for anonymity and not as a reference to the impact that his music has on the listener. If that is what he wanted to reference, his previous identity would have been Poetry.

Bernard Fowler & His Rock n Roll All-Star Band - Highline Ballroom
February 08, 2012 -

Bernard Fowlers talents as a singer, songwriter, producer, and instrumentalist have resonated through the span of his extraordinary career in the music industry. He has appeared on over 30 albums, most recently focusing his artistic energy on his solo project Friends with Privileges, which he released in 2006. This critically acclaimed effort draws from his diverse influences and exercises his wide-ranging, powerful vocals while coupling his unique brand of rock with stylish grooves. Fowlers first success in the music industry came early in his career as a trailblazer of house music in the garage music era. As a member of the New York Citi Peech Boys, he started his trend of musical experimentation with the club hit "Dont Make Me Wait." While collaborating with Herbie Hancock on Hancocks album Future Shock (1983), he began his long-standing relationship Mick Jagger, contributing to Jagger's solo album Shes the Boss (1985). Fowler went on to appear on every Rolling Stones album from 1989s Steel Wheels to 2008s Shine A Light. Fowler has lent his inspired vocals to solo albums for Keith Richards and Ron Wood, as well as fronting two jazz albums for Charlie Watts and producing two albums for Ron Wood. George Clinton & The P-Funk All-Stars - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
February 08, 2012 - New York

Born in 1941, George Clinton is the principal architect of P-Funk. He was the mastermind of the bands Parliament and Funkadelic during the 1970s and early 1980s, and he is a solo funk artist as of 1981. He has been called one of the most important innovators of funk music, next to James Brown and Sly Stone. Clinton is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, inducted in 1997 with 15 other members of Parliament-Funkadelic. The Parliaments began as a doo-wop group based in Plainfield, New Jersey, where Clinton grew up. The band eventually found success under the names Parliament and Funkadelic in the '70s. These two groups combined elements of musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone, Cream, and James Brown while exploring different sounds, technology, and lyricism. In 1982, Clinton signed to Capitol Records as a solo artist and as the P-Funk All-Stars, releasing Computer Games that same year. The disc featured the smash hits "Loopzilla" and "Atomic Dog." A string of successful albums and singles followed, including "Nubian Nut," "Last Dance," and "Do Fries Go with That Shake?" The Red Hot Chili Peppers also tapped Clinton to produce their album Freaky Styley (1985). Though Clinton's popularity had waned by the mid-'80s, he experienced something of resurgence in the early '90s as many rappers cited him as an influence and began sampling his songs. The '90s and early '00s saw him releasing additional albums, reuniting with several old members of Parliament and Funkadelic, appearing in films, and collaborating with a variety of artists. In 2005, he also formed a record label called The C Kunspyruhzy. His latest solo album, titled George Clinton and His Gangsters of Love, came out in 2008 on Shanachie Records. The disc features guest appearances by Sly Stone, El DeBarge, Red Hot Chili Peppers, RZA, Carlos Santana, and more. These days, Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic tour 200 days out of the year in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the US. With multiple projects in the works, the master is still on top of his game. "I ain't going nowhere," he declares. "I feel like I'm starting over right now ... for real!"

tUnE-yArDs - Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts
February 09, 2012 -

New England native Merrill Gerbus' career started in theater, but a trip to Africa changed her. She embraced African rhythms and odd vocal techniques, creating drum loops on the spot and layering them with ukulele and voice. Now fleshed out with a bassist and two saxophone players, tUne-yArDs' musical performances are joyous, complex pieces that show their African influences but veer off into something more theatrical and decidedly more modern. As for the name tUnE-yArDs, it is from a lyric from an old song by Gerbus. "And we'll fly over tune-yards in our dreams" described a place where songs just grew instead of needing to be concocted and convoluted. The odd capitalization was a way to get attention on Myspace.

Papadosio - Horizon Wireless - Speakerbot - pH Factor - Highline Ballroom
February 09, 2012 -

Some music, because of its originality, timelessness, mass appeal, or perhaps because it is just plain odd, will always be destined for the hallowed halls of cult classicism. No band fits this criteria better than Papadosio. Formed in Athens, OH, the band has been creating a home at the forefront of live electronica for five years, wowing crowds from Denver and Cleveland to NYC and Atlanta, and shaking the earth at festivals and clubs alike. Papadosio's music is all about unexpected combinations. From rock and house to jazz, hip-hop, dub, and so on, every song has a unique approach to attaining originality. Long improvisational interludes and vocal harmonies project an amplified message of transcendence, unity, and universal understanding that quickly sets this group in a new category of mass appeal. Now hailing from Asheville, NC, Papadosio has released three albums: Magreenery (2007), By the Light of the Stars EP (2008), and Observations (2009). Take one listen to any of these discs, and the band's mission becomes abundantly clear: to combine eclectic musical traditions with modern electronica to stir the heart and fuel the mind.

Stravinsky Violin Concerto - New York City Ballet
February 11, 2012 -

In 1941, Balanchine choreographed Balustrade for the Ballet Russe to Stravinsky's Violin Concerto in D. When he returned to the score three decades later, he could no longer remember his original choreography. But Balanchine was not at all disturbed by the loss. "What I did then was for then," he said, "and what I wanted to do to this music for our Stravinsky Festival... represented more than 30 years' difference." The new choreography follows the score directly: An opening "Toccata" and a final "Capriccio" enclose two central "Arias," which form contrasting pas de deux for two different couples.

Laura Benanti - Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts
February 11, 2012 -

Her astonishing beauty is matched by a bell-clear soprano and the ability to inhabit characters with total conviction. In her cabaret shows she lets out an antic sense of humor, and on Broadway in Nine, A Little Night Music, and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown Benanti was the brightest light on stage. Benanti won a Tony Award for her role in Gypsy, making the transformation from tomboy Louise to the stripper Gypsy Rose Lee completely believable and heart-wrenching.

Romeo - Madison Square Garden
February 11, 2012 -

While most 13 year-old boys were out chasing girls and shooting hoops, Romeo opted to stay home, penning his first songs. It is well known that Romeo's idol in bachata is Antony "El Mayimbe" Santos. However, his fascination with the art of the popular song commenced when he discovered the likes of Camilo Sesto, Manuel Alejandro, Juan Gabriel, Omar Alfano, and, of course, Juan Luis Guerra. Most people focus on the artist, but Romeo always wanted to know who wrote the song. His blossoming love affair with songwriting was only the beginning of a journey he had barely envisioned. As fate would have it, Romeo soon joined his church choir with his cousin Henry. Shortly thereafter, Romeo and Henry would meet their destiny and join Lenny and Mikey to form Aventura. It is well-known to insiders that Romeo will not write songs for just anyone. He has been extremely selective, as he believes there must be a visceral connection between himself and the artist he is writing for. As a matter of fact, a defining factor in Romeo's career is his continuing quest for exclusivity and privacy in general. Today Romeo embarks on his journey as a solo artist with his debut solo album, entitled "Formula," slated to release in fall, 2011. The artist has chosen an eclectic mix of Bachata, R&B, Ballads - up tempo and fusion to delight his fans. With all of the Bachata tracks to be written, arranged and produced by Romeo himself, he has invited selected A-list producer to collaborate in the Anglo tracks - just about anything can be expected. Romeo's wild ride has just begun.

FEINSTEIN'S AT LOEWS REGENCY, the nightclub proclaimed "Best of New York" by New York Magazine and "an invaluable New York institution" by The New York Post will continue its Winter/Spring 2012 season with the New York nightclub debut of Grammy Award-nominated "American Idol" winner RUBEN STUDDARD from February 7 to February 11. In addition to jazz, pop and soul standards, he will perform his new single "June 28th (I'm Single)" from his upcoming CD "Letters From Birmingham," which will be released by Shanachie Entertainment on March 13. This concept album about the ups and downs of modern romance is setting the standard for modern day soul troubadours and boasts stunning performances that range from an angelic falsetto on love songs like "Today" to hard-hitting dance floor grooves like "Turn You Out" that show off a raw vocal edge. The show will run for four nights from February 7 to February 11 at the Loews Regency Hotel (540 Park Avenue at 61st Street). RUBEN STUDDARD was crowned the winner of Fox Television's "American Idol" talent competition in 2003 after pulling over 24 million votes. His single "Flying Without Wings" debuted at No. 2 on the Hot 100 while his version of "Superstar" peaked at No. 2 on the R&B chart. In December 2003, his first album, Soulful, had advance orders of over a million copies, automatically qualifying for platinum certification. The record entered The Billboard 200 at No. 1. A follow-up single, "Sorry 2004," reached No. 9 on the Hot 100 and No. 2 on the R&B chart. Ruben's next album was "I Need An Angel," released in November 2004. The sophomore set topped Billboard's gospel chart and was the magazine's No. 1 gospel album of the year. Ruben's third album, "The Return," found him back in the Top 10, on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The first single, "Change Me," spent an impressive eight weeks at No. 1 on the Adult R&B list. In 2004, he won the NAACP's Image Award for Best New Artist. That same year, he was nominated for Favorite Male Soul/R&B Artist at the American Music Awards, Best Male R&B Performance at the Grammys, Best New Soul/R&B or Rap Artist at the Soul Train Awards and Best New Artist and Best Male R&B Artist at the BET Awards. Tramps Like Us: BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN TRIBUTE - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
February 11, 2012 - New York

Tramps Like Us brings more than 2 decades of road-tested musicianship that have won this band the hard-earned distinction of the planet's most revered Bruce Springsteen Tribute band. Rockers and ballads delivered with the raw intensity and swagger reminiscent of the Boss himself. With a repertoire of more than 100 songs, Tramps Like Us has been dedicated to enjoying and sharing Bruce's music in a live setting. Unlike other "tribute" bands who attempt to impersonate or emulate their source in every respect, from looks to clothing to gestures, Tramps Like Us concentrates on the music itself. The group captures the Springsteen sound, and the true spirit and energy of the songs, as well as to delivering them with the passion and conviction of the Boss. In keeping with the tradition of a typical Springsteen concert, Tramps prides itself on long and intense concerts, often playing 3.5 to 4 hour shows and at times without a break. Tramps has been able to cover up to 36 songs on any given night

Rebirth Brass Band : Pre-Mardi Gras Celebration with the 2012 Grammy Nominees with Zongo Junction: 12 PC Afro-Beat Band From Brooklyn plus DJ Cochon De Lait - Hiro Ballroom
February 11, 2012 - New York, NY

Zongo Junction is generating a well-deserved buzz in NYC’s burgeoning afrobeat scene. The ensemble blends West African rhythms with funk, jazz and soul. True to their inspiration, Nigerian superstar, political activist and afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the outfit excites dance floors wherever they perform.

The critics agree. “The only thing Zongo Junction has to do to start a legitimate dance party is show up and plug in…anyone within a square block earshot of this Ford-tough funk factory would be hard pressed not to join in the hoopla,” says the Bay Area’s SF Station. “Sheer energy, with a brawny horn section that played unison lines with the force of a tractor-trailer and a rhythm section that roared with power and noise.” Says the Village Voice.

The band, 12 pieces in total, has toured extensively throughout the East and West coats. Highlights include a sold out show at Slim's in San Francisco on December 30, 2010, a Monday night residency at Brooklyn Bowl in June 2011 and a recent tour supporting Asheville, NC heavyweights, Toubab Krewe.

The band released their debut album Thieves! on December 30, 2010. As afrobeat music has always done, the album speaks truth-to-power with humor and soul. The album’s five original songs feature long-time Fela Kuti band member, Leon Kaleta Ligan-Majek, on vocals. Members of the band have performed or recorded with: TV on the Radio, Easy Star All Stars, The Walkmen, and many more. This is a Standing Room Only show.

Barry Manilow - Radio City Music Hall
Through February 12, 2012 -

Singer-songwriter Barry Manilow will return to Radio City Music Hall in New York City and perform three shows, February 10, 11, and 12, 2012. The announcement of these special concerts coincides with the release of 15 MINUTES, Manilow's first original album in 10 years and will be in stores on June 14. Tickets are on sale now! After having recorded six critically acclaimed albums of songs written by the greatest songwriters of all time - from Gershwin to Bacharach, as well as two Platinum Christmas albums-- Barry Manilow returns at last to his true passion: songwriting. Inspired by the Andy Warhol quote, "In the future, everybody will be world famous for fifteen minutes," this exciting guitar-driven pop album explores the perils and pinnacles of fame's double-edged sword. 15 MINUTES is a compilation of 16 original tracks written by Manilow and lyricist Enoch Anderson. Making a guest appearance on 15 MINUTES is young Nataly Dawn, lead singer of the white-hot group, Pomplamoose. Her rendition of "Letter From A Fan" is both innocent and eerie.
