“Midnight Moment” Featuring “Stasis”, a celestial inspired piece by artists Taxiplasm & Jonathan Henry. - Digital signs in Times Square
Through January 31, 2013 - New York

This January, supernovas, cosmic collisions and stellar patterns will collide on the billboards in Times Square, turning the “Crossroads of the World” into the “Crossroads of the Universe.” The “Midnight Moment,” presented by the Times Square Advertising Coalition (TSAC) and Times Square Arts, launches its 2013 season with Stasis, a celestial inspired piece by artists Taxiplasm & Jonathan Henry. The synchronized art program will be shown on over fifteen of the largest digital screens in Times Square every night at 11:57 pm – midnight, as part of the largest coordinated effort in history by sign operators in Times Square to display daily, synchronized creative content.

Tourists and metro area residents have been raving about the late night free attraction and digital gallery that is bringing creativity, energy and cutting-edge graphics, and digital art to the Crossroads of the World. The “Midnight Moment” is the largest coordinated effort in history by the sign operators in Times Square to display synchronized, cutting-edge creative content on billboards throughout Times Square every night. The program, formerly known as Times Square Moment: A Digital Gallery, premiered in May 2012 and is organized and supported by the Times Square Advertising Coalition in partnership with Times Square Arts, the public art program for the Times Square Alliance, with additional partners of participating sign holders and artists.

Each night, Times Square becomes a digital art gallery through dazzling visuals on select billboards. Every show begins at 11:57pm with a "countdown" that signals the start of the 3 minute nightly presentation. Content changes monthly; selected works are announced in the weeks preceding the start of a new show as are the exact signs participating in that month's selection.

Encores! Fiorello - New York City Center
Through February 03, 2013 -

The 20th Anniversary season of New York City Center's Tony Award-winning Encores! series will open with Fiorello!, the show that launched the Encores! series in 1994. Fiorello! chronicles New York's Mayor LaGuardia's rise from an immigrant's son to the feisty congressman who brought down the crooked Tammany Hall political machine. (He's also the man singularly responsible for saving City Center from the wrecking ball and transforming it into Manhattan's first performing arts center.) Fiorello! has a book by Jerome Weidman and George Abbott; music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. It won the Tony Award for Best Musical and is one of only eight musicals to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Songs from the 1959 show include 'Little Tin Box,' 'Till Tomorrow,' 'Politics and Poker' and 'When Did I Fall In Love.'

Materializing 'Six Years': Lucy R. Lippard and the Emergence of Conceptual Art - Brooklyn Museum
Through February 17, 2013 - Prospect Heights

This exhibition is devoted to examining the defining impact Lucy R. Lippard's groundbreaking book Six Years had on the emergent Conceptual art movement. Published in 1973, Six Years simultaneously catalogued and described the development of conceptual art practices in the late sixties and early seventies, and is now widely considered an essential reference work for the period. Using the book's content to structure the exhibition, Materializing "Six Years" showcases the artists brought together and championed by Lippard, and demonstrates how her curatorial projects, critical writing, and political engagement helped to redefine exhibition-making, art criticism, and the viewing experience.

The exhibition will feature more than 170 objects by nearly ninety artists who were working internationally across a range of mediums. In addition to presenting important artworks, the exhibition will convey the political foment of an era that saw both the emergence of Conceptual art and the rise of the Women's Rights, Civil Rights, and anti?Vietnam War movements, and will illustrate the period's experimental impulses through catalogues, artist publications, periodicals, photographs, and ephemera from key exhibitions and events.
