Mathew Jonson really is one of a kind. He's developed one of the most distinctive voices in electronic dance music when you hear one of Jonson's tracks, you almost immediately know it's his. And yet there's no mistaking any given track for another. His music offers a rare fusion of populist intensities and nuanced musicality. With a keen understanding for the needs of the dance floor and the universal laws of house and techno, he's thrown out the rule book time and time again, sneaking tricks learned from electro and even drum & bass into minimal clubs, and loading up his B-sides with tracks that do what they damned well please.

Midnite / DJ Carter Van Pelt - SummerStage
June 06, 2012 - Brooklyn

Midnite weaves the cultural lyrics of "old school" roots music with modern day experiences to create a unique listening experience. "Roots Reggae" is an apt description for Midnite's musical style, in which they forgo the frills of extensive remixes, overdubbing and other musical refinements. The group's vigorous, weighty sound, driven by punchy bass lines is on the cutting edge of modern roots music. Their debut album, Unpolished which included such classics as "Don't Move" and "Love the Life You Live" was released in 1997 to much acclaim. For their second release, Ras Mek Peace, songs like "Hieroglyphics," in which graffiti is likened to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, showcases the intelligent songwriting that pervades all of Midnite's works. Head DJ of Eastern Standard Time on WKCR 89.9 FM in New York City, DJ Carter Van Pelt is a true student of Jamaican music of every era, from ska to dancehall. His focus on 70s reggae will set the mood for Midnite's hypnotic brand of VI (Virgin Island) roots. His WKCR program has earned a worldwide reputation for bringing artists to the studio for historic interviews, augmented with deep cuts, all played from vinyl. Van Pelt is also the founder/producer of the Coney Island Reggae Soundsystem Series, held each summer on the iconic Coney Island Boardwalk.

Graffiti6 with Special Guest Yuna - Highline Ballroom
June 07, 2012 -

The music of British pop rock duo Graffiti6 is as vividly vibrant as the group's name suggests: an uncategorizable melange of pop, psychedelia, R&B, and British soul that fully capitalizes on the soaring uplift of Jamie Scott's emotionally transparent voice and gift for melody and TommyD's irresistible rhythms and inventive production. Both Scott and TommyD (real name Tommy Danvers) are London-born multi-instrumentalists who began making music together in 2009 and decided to call the resulting collaboration Graffiti6. After Scott released his solo debut album in 2006, he was considering working with new collaborators as a way to repackage the album when an A&R executive at Polydor suggested he meet Danvers. The two hit it off instantly, and instead of repackaging Scott's solo album with production by Danvers, the two decided to start writing original material together.

The New York Times calls Krakowski, "A gold digger, a femme fatale, a sex-crazed she-devil in a red dress: Krakowski toys lightly with such images in her frothy cabaret act…an anthology of songs both famous and obscure, loaded with saucy double entendres, that were once staples for the likes of Eartha Kitt, Mae West and Ethel Waters." In her Town Hall debut, she will beguile the audience with American, Broadway, pop and jazz tunes that showcase her unique voice and personality.

The trick worked, and at age 19, Gary Anderson became Gary U.S. Bonds. His follow-up was the now-legendary party track "Quarter to Three," a No. 1 hit with a spirit and energy that would eventually inspire and influence a generation. Over the next three years, Bonds co-wrote and recorded hit after good-time hit: "School is Out," "School is In," "Dear Lady Twist," "Twist, Twist Senora," "Seven Day Weekend," and others.
