June 02, 2012 -

Sensational singer, songwriter, producer, and actress Ms. Lauryn Hill returns to Highline Ballroom for one night only! Hill first burst onto the hip-hop scene in the '90s with the supergroup the Fugees, formed with friends Wycliffe Jean and Prakazrel "Pras" Michel while still in high school. The group's second album, The Score (1996), featured Hill's vocals on tracks like "Killing Me Softly" and sold 17 million copies. Hill also dabbled in acting throughout the '90s, appearing in soap operas and several films. She participated in a brief Fugees reunion in the mid-'00s, but the string of international performances failed to produce an album. Blk|Market Membership: 6-Year Anniversary - Highline Ballroom
June 02, 2012 -

Mathew Jonson really is one of a kind. He's developed one of the most distinctive voices in electronic dance music when you hear one of Jonson's tracks, you almost immediately know it's his. And yet there's no mistaking any given track for another. His music offers a rare fusion of populist intensities and nuanced musicality. With a keen understanding for the needs of the dance floor and the universal laws of house and techno, he's thrown out the rule book time and time again, sneaking tricks learned from electro and even drum & bass into minimal clubs, and loading up his B-sides with tracks that do what they damned well please.

KENNY LATTIMORE - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
June 03, 2012 - New York

International R&B singer Kenny Lattimore embodies the elements of traditional R&B with a decidedly contemporary flare and feel. Whether putting a distinctive stamp on classic songs recorded by such musical icons as Donny Hathaway ("I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know") and George Harrison ("While My Guitar Gently Weeps"), or creating his own legacy of hits such as "Never Too Busy" and the wedding ballad "For You," Lattimore's style combines passion, sensuality, intensity, and subtlety, making him one of today's premier male vocalists.

Midnite / DJ Carter Van Pelt - SummerStage
June 06, 2012 - Brooklyn

Midnite weaves the cultural lyrics of "old school" roots music with modern day experiences to create a unique listening experience. "Roots Reggae" is an apt description for Midnite's musical style, in which they forgo the frills of extensive remixes, overdubbing and other musical refinements. The group's vigorous, weighty sound, driven by punchy bass lines is on the cutting edge of modern roots music. Their debut album, Unpolished which included such classics as "Don't Move" and "Love the Life You Live" was released in 1997 to much acclaim. For their second release, Ras Mek Peace, songs like "Hieroglyphics," in which graffiti is likened to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, showcases the intelligent songwriting that pervades all of Midnite's works. Head DJ of Eastern Standard Time on WKCR 89.9 FM in New York City, DJ Carter Van Pelt is a true student of Jamaican music of every era, from ska to dancehall. His focus on 70s reggae will set the mood for Midnite's hypnotic brand of VI (Virgin Island) roots. His WKCR program has earned a worldwide reputation for bringing artists to the studio for historic interviews, augmented with deep cuts, all played from vinyl. Van Pelt is also the founder/producer of the Coney Island Reggae Soundsystem Series, held each summer on the iconic Coney Island Boardwalk.

Graffiti6 with Special Guest Yuna - Highline Ballroom
June 07, 2012 -

The music of British pop rock duo Graffiti6 is as vividly vibrant as the group's name suggests: an uncategorizable melange of pop, psychedelia, R&B, and British soul that fully capitalizes on the soaring uplift of Jamie Scott's emotionally transparent voice and gift for melody and TommyD's irresistible rhythms and inventive production. Both Scott and TommyD (real name Tommy Danvers) are London-born multi-instrumentalists who began making music together in 2009 and decided to call the resulting collaboration Graffiti6. After Scott released his solo debut album in 2006, he was considering working with new collaborators as a way to repackage the album when an A&R executive at Polydor suggested he meet Danvers. The two hit it off instantly, and instead of repackaging Scott's solo album with production by Danvers, the two decided to start writing original material together.

Jane Krakowski Live - The Town Hall
June 08, 2012 -

Part sex kitten, part All-American girl, Tony Award winner and three-time Emmy nominee Krakowski has a knack for scene stealing roles, from hit television shows like Ally McBeal and 30 Rock to Broadway, where she earned a Tony Award for her role in the revival of Nine. The New York Times calls Krakowski, "A gold digger, a femme fatale, a sex-crazed she-devil in a red dress: Krakowski toys lightly with such images in her frothy cabaret act…an anthology of songs both famous and obscure, loaded with saucy double entendres, that were once staples for the likes of Eartha Kitt, Mae West and Ethel Waters." In her Town Hall debut, she will beguile the audience with American, Broadway, pop and jazz tunes that showcase her unique voice and personality.

Jessica Reedy first gained national attention as a contestant on the second season of the national TV gospel singing competition, BET's Sunday Best. GARY U.S. BONDS - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
June 09, 2012 - New York

As America's baby boomers moved into their mid-teens, a young musician named Gary Anderson began his professional career. To draw attention to his first cut, "New Orleans," he sent promotional copies of the track to radio stations in sleeves inscribed with the phrase "Buy U.S. Bonds." The trick worked, and at age 19, Gary Anderson became Gary U.S. Bonds. His follow-up was the now-legendary party track "Quarter to Three," a No. 1 hit with a spirit and energy that would eventually inspire and influence a generation. Over the next three years, Bonds co-wrote and recorded hit after good-time hit: "School is Out," "School is In," "Dear Lady Twist," "Twist, Twist Senora," "Seven Day Weekend," and others. He performed throughout the world, rising to a status so high that on a 1963 tour of Europe, he headlined above a group of relative newcomers - The Beatles

As he has done on his recent "sojourns through America," Friedman will be performing solo, dispensing the wisdom of the Jewish troubadour, and signing books. The Kinkster, whose solo performance has recently been described as "Mark Twain meets Groucho Marx ... at the corner of Johnny Cash and Lenny Bruce," will be hitting the road fresh on the heels of the release of his brand new book, The Billy Bob Tapes: A Cave Full of Ghosts, co-authored by and about the life and times of Billy Bob Thornton.
