The musical was The Wiz. The girl was Stephanie Mills.

Philippe Frangione, better known by his stage name Akhenaton, has become one of the highest-profile artists from Marseilles, France. He is without a doubt one of the most widely heard representatives of French rap music. Known under a pseudonym borrowed from ancient Egypt, the rapper first gained notoriety as a hip-hop theorist, publishing the influential essay "La Deuxieme Generation du Hip-Hop" in 1988 in the fanzine Ve. After making his recorded debut that same year with Let's Make Some Noise, he helped form the group that would become the hip-hop coalition IAM, one of the most popular French hip-hop acts of its generation.

Alabama Shakes / Diamond Rugs / Robert Ellis - SummerStage
June 24, 2012 -

The story of the Alabama Shakes begins in a high school psychology class in Athens, Alabama when Brittany Howard approached Zac Cockrell and asked if he wanted to try making music together. Inspired by diverse artists such as James Brown, Otis Redding, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC, the band retained a sense of groove and space from their idols, along with a blistering force and emotion that simply couldn't be learned. Eventually finding their way to a Nashville studio in 2011, they cut the song "You Ain't Alone," which helped launched the band. In 2011, NPR named them one of the best bands of the year, while MTV has called them one of the top bands to look for in 2012.

AFRO BLUE - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
June 24, 2012 - New York

Afro-Blue is a fun-loving jazz and pop a cappella ensemble from Howard University in Washington, D.C. The group started as a class in the music department at Howard in 2002, with this current version of the group singing together since 2009. Afro-Blue has plenty of soul, and all 10 members meld together quite nicely. With beautiful harmonies, soaring solos, and a fresh look, Afro-Blue is a legitimate contender in any singing competition (including, of course NBC's The Sing-Off).

Buika - Highline Ballroom
June 24, 2012 -

Buika is one of the most peculiar Spanish artists around. This singer, born on the island of Mallorca to African immigrant parents from Equatorial Guinea, has become a true revelation to those who thought flamenco had little left to contribute to Spanish music, and to jazz. Her evident African roots and her cosmopolitanism, developed in clubs in Spain and Americanized during a strange detour to Las Vegas as a Tina Turner impersonator, explain Buika's rare self-possession. But nothing can quite explain her ability to connect as one of those rare and wonderful "one-listen" artists.

THE FLATLANDERS - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
June 25, 2012 - New York

The fact that Texas music titans Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock - on their first go-around as The Flatlanders in 1972 - were completely rejected by the country music establishment is surprising in retrospect but, ultimately, poetic. That each went on to have formidable solo careers is a testament to their talent and determination. Add to this their diverse yet complimentary styles - Ely the street-wise rocker, Gilmore the mystic with the classic country voice, and Hancock the cerebral folk singer - and you've got a story of one of the most extraordinary kinships in American musical history.

STANLEY CLARKE & GEORGE DUKE - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
June 26, 2012 - New York

Bassist Stanley Clarke teamed up with keyboardist George Duke in 1981 to form the Clarke/Duke Project, scoring a Top 20 pop hit with the single "Sweet Baby." Over the course of their funk-filled and genre-smashing collaborations, including three albums, the two have created performances full of fun, energy, and exceptional musicianship, with a big bottom and keyboard flights of fancy. More of the same fantastic musical roller-coaster ride is on the way in the 2012 Blue Note Jazz Festival with the new Clarke/Duke 4 "Bring It" Tour. It's been six years since Clarke and Duke toured together, and both are excited to hit the road together again. "I'm looking forward to these performances, because the most fun I have touring is with George. We have a good time together," remarked Clarke. Duke concurred: "Touring with Stanley is always a good thing, because he's a nut. He's the younger brother I never had." Don't miss these two musical legends performing the unique blend of jazz fusion they helped pioneer almost 40 years ago.

Eric Hutchinson - Highline Ballroom
June 26, 2012 -

By all accounts, Eric Hutchinson burst onto the music scene several years later than he should have. His first album caught the ears of Madonna's Maverick Records, which signed him later that year. However, the label folded before he was able to issue a release on the imprint. Hutchinson struck out on his own, self-promoting and producing his next album Sounds Like This (2007). Again, his release garnered the attention of a media juggernaut - Perez Hilton. This time, however, the attention paid off. Sounds Like This ascended to No. 5 on the iTunes Store and No. 1 on Billboard's Heatseekers album chart. With all the hype, Hutchinson was quickly snatched up by Warner Bros. Records, which re-released the disc.

Robert Davi - Metropolitan Room
June 26, 2012 -

Robert Davi, one of the most recognizable entertainers in the world, was singing long before Frank Sinatra personally selected him to play Mickey Sinardos in the 1977 NBC television drama Contract on Cherry Street. As a teenager Robert already had an insatiable desire to not just distinguish himself as a singer, but to follow his idol's lead and become a singer who really could act. Davi studied opera as a young man, and always intended to make singing his career. As fate would have it, however, his screen career took flight and there was no looking back. An iconic screen presence, Robert worked with the biggest names in Hollywood, from Marlon Brando, Clint Eastwood, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Josh Brolin, Bruce Willis and James Franco, appeared in such iconic pop cultural movies as Die Hard, Showgirls, The Goonies and considered one of the top three Bond villains, Franz Sanchez, of all time in License to Kill. His television credits are just as vast, starting with the hit NBC television series Profiler and continuing with Stargate: Atlantis and most recently Criminal Minds. Now after 100 movies with remarkable diversity, hit television credits and his award winning directorial film debut (The Dukes), Davi is returning to his first love. While Davi may portray characters in drama, comedy and action that define "the tough guy persona," it's nothing more than an artist working his craft. The real Robert Davi is the man we hear on this album: a sensitive romantic; a gentle soul who brings a masculine edge to these songs; a great mixture of sensitivity and toughness. For the recording, Davi chose two music legends, producer Phil Ramone and mixing engineer Al Schmitt, which speaks volumes about his intentions to make this a meaningful career endeavor. "Frank Sinatra encouraged young singers to, "Pick up the torch" and perpetuate this amazing music. With Davi Sings Sinatra, On The Road To Romance (available Oct 24), Robert Davi has heeded the rally cry of "ole blue eyes".

Founded in 2004 by New York guitarist, Steph Paynes, It wasn’t long before the group’s reputation for playing Zeppelin’s music with a kind of passion and force beyond anyone’s expectations began to attract major interest from press and industry. In June, 2005, Chuck Klosterman wrote an article for SPIN magazine that featured Lez Zeppelin as a leading protagonist in a trend of all-female hard rock “tribute” bands. He referred to the group “the most powerful all-female band in rock history” and described the rise of bands like Lez Zeppelin as a “kind of multilayered cultural phenomenon.” The fortunes and notoriety of the group surged after this and Lez Zeppelin became provocative subject for the news media across the world. Stories about the group appeared in the Times of London, whose journalist called the band “the best new band I’ve seen all year, no question;” Reuters and CNN.com, which ran a front page feature that called the group so “electrifying” they are “driving club audiences to a frenzy.” The group also appeared as part of a major feature on CBS Good Morning, which ran nation-wide, as well as on many other local TV news spots in New York (ABC, WB) and across the country.

Meshell Ndegeocello - Highline Ballroom
June 28, 2012 -

Canonized, marginalized, or just scrutinized, Meshell Ndegeocello has given up trying to explain herself. After 20 years in an industry that has called her everything from avant-garde to a dying breed, what unquestionably remains is a fearsome bassist, a prolific songwriter, and the creativity and curiosity of an authentic musical force. With these elements alone, she has earned critical acclaim (including 10 Grammy nominations), the unfailing respect of fellow players, songwriters, and composers, and the dedication of her diverse, unclassifiable fans.

Robert Davi - Metropolitan Room
June 28, 2012 -

Undoubtedly, the Tony Williams Lifetime, across a half-dozen albums from 1969-1976, helped chart the course of the fusion era. His subsequent emergence as a major composer, with a series of releases for Blue Note in the mid-'80s, cemented his unique place in the jazz pantheon.

Chris Riffle at The Living Room 6.29 - The Living Room
June 29, 2012 - New York

CMJ SPOTLIGHTED FOLK MUSICIAN CHRIS RIFFLE ANNOUNCES SHOW AT THE LIVING ROOM

Friday, June 29th, 8pm The Living Room

accompanied by: Jimi Zhivago (played with Martha Wainwright, Olabelle, Kim Taylor) - 6string bass Anton Fier (the Golden Palominos & played with Herbie Hancock, John Zorn, Yoko Ono, Bob Mould and Laurie Anderson) - drums James Hession - trumpet & guitar

Chris Riffle takes the stage at notable NYC venue the Living Room accompanied by producer and multi instrumentalist Jimi Zhivago (Ollabelle/Kim Taylor/Martha Wainwright) on Jimi's own unique six string bass, and James Hession on trumpet and guitar. The show will be free and twenty one and up. Chris Riffle’s brand of heartfelt folk is a product—and a tale—of two coasts. There’s no mistaking the pastoral, spacious sound of his roots—the picturesque coastal towns of Washington state, where while still in college Riffle began making waves on local radio stations, and landed support gigs for such indie mainstays as Death Cab for Cutie. And yet it’s the other side of the country, on New York’s famously gritty Lower East Side, where Chris has recently found a second home, becoming a mainstay performer at the venerable Living Room, collaborating with members of The Mars Volta, Ollabelle, and Antony and the Johnsons. On the touring front, Chris’s travels have taken him to both coasts, as well as a recent trip to the Last Frontier – Alaska. This new EP Another Dream marks Riffle’s third release in the last couple years with veteran producer Jimi Zhivago. Not only does it represent Chris’s most determined move yet into a pop realm, but it’s the artist’s richest, most lush production to date. On tracks like the shimmering, tender “All That We Hold”, the hopeless late-night romanticism of “While You Run” and the sensual closer “Kiss On the Cheek”, layers of piano, bass and, notably, organ conspire with Riffle’s guitar and gossamer vocals, for tracks that envelop—intimate meditations on place and our own inherent creativity. And lest we forget: “And I Love Him”, a jazzy, chilled-out reworking of a McCartney chestnut that Riffle makes most decidedly his own. ”A writer and performer of uncommon depth and intimacy -- Nick-Drake-meets-Elliott-Smith...” - DIRECT CURRENT ”Gorgeous, deep, and affecting” - MARK S. TUCKER (F.A.M.E.) "Remarkable in its honesty, fragility, and even wit" - JOHN NORRIS

THE LIVING ROOM IS LOCATED AT 154 LUDLOW STREET BETWEEN STANTON AND RIVINGTON

YELLOWMAN - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill
June 30, 2012 - New York

Jamaica's first dancehall superstar, Yellowman ushered in a new era in reggae music following Bob Marley's death in 1981. His success in the early '80s brought the popularity of toasting - the reggae equivalent of rapping - to a whole new level and helped establish dancehall as the wave of the future. He was one of the most verbally nimble toasters of his time, with a loose, easy flow, a talent for improvisation, and a definite wit in his wordplay. True to his stage name, Yellowman is an albino, which carries a tremendous social stigma in Jamaica. However, neither that stigma nor his bout with cancer in the '80s have impaired his success or his huge influence on successive generations of dancehall toasters.
