Nancy Wilson - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill

Nancy Wilson's musical style is so diverse that it is hard to classify. Over the years her repertoire has included pop style ballads, jazz and blues, show tunes and well known standards. Critics have described her as "a jazz singer," "a blues singer," "a pop singer," and "a cabaret singer." Still others have referred to her as "a storyteller," "a professor emeritus of body language," "a consummate actress," and "the complete entertainer." Then who is this song stylist (that's the descriptive title she prefers) whose voice embodies the nuances of gospel, blues, and jazz? Her colleague and long time friend Joe Williams used to call her "the thrush from Columbus." By the age of four, Nancy Wilson knew she wanted to be a singer. Born in Chillicothe, OH, Nancy grew up in Columbus where her father provided early exposure to many vocalists. These included male singers Billy Eckstine and Louis Jordan, and the rhythm and blues of Ruth Brown and LaVerne Baker. Nat King Cole was influential as well. She also heard big band vocalists Jimmy Rushing with Count Basie's Orchestra, and Lionel Hampton's Little Jimmy Scott. As a child she took an active part in church music as well as school choirs and dance bands. Nancy's professional singing career began at the age of 15. She had her own television show, Skyline Melody, on a local station. Soon after, she began performing in clubs in the Columbus area. After graduating high school, still undecided about a music career, she enrolled in the teacher training program at Central State College. But in 1956, Nancy's desire outweighed the uncertainty of a vocal career, so she left college to join The Rusty Bryant Band. That same year she met Julian "Cannonball" Adderley when she accompanied Bryant's band to New York City for a recording session. Adderley, impressed with her talent and determination, took an immediate interest in her career and the two kept in touch. In 1959, Nancy moved to New York City, allotting herself six months to attain her goals. She wanted Cannonball's manager, John Levy, to represent her, and she wanted Capitol Records as her label. Within four weeks of her arrival in New York she got her first big break, a call to fill in for Irene Reid at The Blue Morocco. Nancy did so well that the club booked her on a permanent basis; she was singing four nights a week and working as a receptionist during the day. She called John Levy and he went to catch her show. Image"John called me the very next day. He set up a session to record a demo," Nancy recalls. "Ray Bryant and I went in and recorded "Guess Who I Saw Today," "Sometimes I'm Happy," and two other songs. We sent them to Capitol and within five days the phone rang. Within six weeks I had all the things I wanted." Nancy's debut single, "Guess Who I Saw Today," was so successful that between April of 1960 and July of 1962 Capitol Records released five Nancy Wilson albums. Two of those remain in-demand reissues to this day: The Swingin's Mutual with George Shearing (1961) and Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley (1962), and earned her a permanent star in the jazz constellation. In 1963 "Tell Me The Truth" became her first truly major hit, leading up to her performance at the Coconut Grove in 1964 - the turning pointing of her career garnering critical acclaim from coast to coast. Time Magazine wrote, "She is, all at once, both cool and sweet, both singer and story teller."

Nancy was seen performing on variety shows (The Andy Williams Show, The Carol Burnett Show, The Flip Wilson Show, and others) and for one season she had her own popular television program, The Nancy Wilson Show (NBC) that won an Emmy in 1975. Nancy also took on acting roles, appearing on popular television shows throughout the years, from I Spy, Room 222, Hawaii Five-O, and Police Story, to The Cosby Show, Soul Food, New York Undercover, Moesha, and The Parkers. After years with Capitol, during many of which she was second in sales only to the Beatles, surpassing even Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, the Beach Boys, and early idol Nat King Cole, the business had changed providing Nancy with an opportunity to seek out projects that allowed her to express the maturity that she acquired throughout her then 55 years of life. One of the more interesting albums from her later period came about in 1991, when singer Barry Manilow was given a sheath full of lyrics written by the late Johnny Mercer which the great songwriter had never put to music. Manilow added melodies and chose Nancy to sing the resultant songs. In 1995, when National Public Radio (NPR) was looking for an articulate voice with both name value and jazz credibility to host their Jazz Profiles series, Nancy was the obvious choice. Not only did she know the music, but she knew the artists personally. Her first profile for this program was the 75th birthday tribute to Charlie Parker. In the late 1990s, Nancy teamed up with MCG Jazz, a social enterprise supporting the youth education programs of the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, a nonprofit, minority-directed, arts and learning organization located in Pittsburgh, PA. A Nancy Wilson Christmas, released for the 2001 holiday season was her only completed Christmas album. All proceeds form the sale of A Nancy Wilson Christmas went directly to support the programs of MCG Jazz. Three years later Nancy gave MCG Jazz and the world of music another gift - R.S.V.P. (Rare Songs, Very Personal) - which was released on August 25, 2004. Receiving gifts in return, R.S.V.P. (Rare Songs, Very Personal) won the 2005 GRAMMY? Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album and the 2005 NAACP Image Award for Best Jazz Artist. (This was her second GRAMMY?, the first being in 1964 for "How Glad I Am," and her second Image Award, the first being in 1986.) Other honors Nancy has received include a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, streets and days dedicated in her name, honorary doctorate degrees, and in 2005, the UNCF Trumpet Award celebrating African-American achievement, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the NAACP in Chicago, and Oprah Winfrey's Legends Award. Her third CD on the MCG Jazz label, Turned To Blue (released in August 2006), brought her a third Grammy award.

Hue for Two: Mari Kimura and Stephen Gosling - Tenri Cultural Institute

On June 25 at 8:00 PM at Tenri Cultural Center, 43A West 13th Street, The New Spectrum Foundation will present "Hue for Two: Mari Kimura and Stephen Gosling," the inaugural recital for the performing duo of Kimura, inventor of Subharmonics for the violin, and Gosling, a virtuoso pianist and master of unlimited styles. This is the launch of a series of duo concerts they wish to continue every year, presenting a diverse violin/piano duo repertoire, from classical to experimental.

Subharmonics is a technique by which violinist Mari Kimiura plays notes below the open-G string without lowering the tuning. She recently gained broad recognition when she and this revolutionary technique were the subject of a feature story by Matthew Gurewitsch in the New York Times Arts & Leisure on May 15, 2011. The June 25 concert will include the premiere of "Hue for Two," a new work composed by Kimura for violin and piano using Subharmonics. The piece was composed by Kimura as part of her 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship project. It will be the first duo piece using Subharmonics in history of the violin literature.

ABOUT MARI KIMURA

Violinist Mari Kimura (www.marikimura.com) is a revolutionary musician, composer and 2010 Guggenheim winner who has invented new sonic worlds for the violin. The New York Times has written, "Ms. Kimura is a virtuoso playing at the edge" and All Music Guide has described her as "A plugged-in Paganini for the Digital Age." New Music Connoisseur asserted, "Mari Kimura is to the violin what perhaps Henry Cowell and later John Cage were to the piano in the 1920's and 30's--taking it into the future with extended techniques and sounds." Ms. Kimura is also well known for developing the extended technique of "Subharmonics." This has put her at the forefront of violinists who are extending the technical and expressive capabilities of the instrument. She is also a pioneer in the field of interactive computer music and has earned international acclaim as a soloist and recitalist in both standard and contemporary repertoire. In a New York Times review of an April 11, 2011 concert for Japan relief at the Japan Society, critic Zachary Woolfe attributed "ferociously guttural power" to Ms. Kimura's Bach deconstructions. Last year, Ms. Kimura was awarded a 2010 Music Composition Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and completed a three-month residency at IRCAM in Paris.

On May 20, Kimura will appear in "String Theater," a solo recital at Bohemian Hall, 321 East 73rd Street, hosted by The Vilcek Foundation, New York's biomedical foundation which supports immigrant artists and scientists. Kimura was chosen as one of their featured artists this year. In this appearance, she will introduce a brand new Subharmonic to the audience for the first time---Subharmonic Fifth, which she has been working on for several years.

Mari Kimura's recent CD, "The World Below G and Beyond: Works for Violin Subharmonics and Interactive Computer" (October, 2010 on Mutable Music) is devoted entirely to her own compositions. As the title suggests, it focuses primarily on works using Subharmonics, including the premiere recording of "ALT: Three Movements for violin solo," the piece with which she introduced Subharmonics in concert halls for the first time at a New York solo debut recital in 1994. ABOUT SUBHARMINICS

Subharmonics, a violin technique created by Mari Kimura, has drawn international attention from both the musical and scientific communities. It has been mentioned in Physics and Physics Today. Ms. Kimura has demonstrated the technique at a meeting of Acoustical Society of America and more than a dozen articles about Subharmonics have appeared in musical and scientific journals (including several authored by Kimura herself). The technique is used prominently in "Schemes," a work for violin and orchestra composed for her by Jean-Claude Risset, which will be Ms. Kimura's next worldwide touring project. The work was commissioned by the Suntory Music Foundation and debuted in 2007 in Tokyo.

Kimura has recently created a new Subharmonic interval., the "Subharmonic Fifth." If she plays an Open G string, she can play the fifth below (viola's C). Previously, she had been performing and composing with the "Subharmonic Octave" and "Subharmonic Third." The Fifth has actually been in development for a long time. All three intervals are achieved entirely through bowing technique.

ABOUT STEPHEN GOSLING

Pianist Stephen Gosling is a member of the New York New Music Ensemble, Ensemble Sospeso, American Modern Ensemble, the Orchestra of the League of Composers/ISCM, and Ne(x)tworks. He has additionally been a frequent guest artist of many other groups, including the New York Philharmonic, Dutch Radio Philharmonic, Orpheus, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, American Composers Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and Speculum Musicae. He has performed several times in the Lincoln Center and Mostly Mozart festivals, and was the subject of a New York Times profile in October 2005. Mr. Gosling earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees at the Juilliard School, garnering the Mennin Prize for Outstanding Excellence and Leadership in Music and the Sony Elevated Standards Fellowship. He was also featured as concerto soloist an unprecedented four times.

Mr. Gosling has collaborated with numerous American and European composers, including John Adams, Milton Babbitt, Pierre Boulez, Elliott Carter, Brian Ferneyhough, Oliver Knussen, Steve Reich, Poul Ruders, Charles Wuorinen and John Zorn. He has also worked extensively with New Zealand’s pre-eminent composer, John Psathas, recording two award-winning CDs of his work (Rhythm Spike and Fragments) and premiering his piano concerto Three Psalms with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Recently Mr. Gosling has performed Corigliano’s Piano Concerto with the Phoenix Synphony and Boulez’s Sur Incises with the Met Chamber Orchestra under James Levine at Zankel Hall; given solo recitals at the Stone and at Bargemusic; completed his third CD of solo piano music by Phillip Ramey; and premiered Gheorghe Costinescu’s “Essay in Sound” at the American Composers Alliance Festival at Symphony Space (this live performance will complete a soon-to-be-released recording of Costinescu’s piano music).

Mr. Gosling has performed throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia, and made over 50 recordings to date.

In New York, she gets paid to enter a room, lips first.It's not a party until her benevolent presence is spotted on a banquette, like a space alien sex goddess crossed with a curvy Disney goldfish, doling out insights, giggles, and occasionally free drink tickets. A dominatrix and a regular member of Michael Alig's clubland circus at Limelight's weekly Disco 2000 in the early '90s, Amanda went on to work Patricia Field's makeup counter while finding her constantly changing face the most marketable object in town. It's been used to promote Heatherette, M.A.C., and Swatch, to name just three trendy brands, and in 2006, way before he designed for that other first lady, Jason Wu did an Amanda Lepore doll, which represented her in plastic—a creative act that made perfect (dollars and) sense. "But who is Amanda Lepore?" is an often overheard remark, second only to "But WHAT is Amanda Lepore?" Well, back in the '90s, a newspaper column blithely called Amanda a drag queen, so she mailed them a Polaroid of herself giving them the finger (with no clothes on, by the way). "I'm a transsexual," the exasperated diva explained to me at the time."I have a vagina!" She'll even show it to you! In person! And as with a lot of her transformations, it came pretty cheap. (As a boy in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, Amanda got hormones from a trannie friend in exchange for outfits. She ended up dating a surgeon who gave her a free nose job, a later boyfriend paying for her sexual reassignment. Who needs nationalized health care when you can just marry well?) Things happen pretty enchantedly for Amanda, though this obscures the fact that beneath her vavoomy exterior is an unflappable person with a will of steel who invariably gets what she wants. Her obsessive dabblings in rhinoplasty, liquid silicone injections, eyelifts, and breast implants are calculated to make her the world's most beautiful lab experiment—an iconic presence that gay artists from Elton John to CAZWELL have used to enhance their videos and that anyone with a camera—and half a brain—automatically aims her way. "Amanda has no interest in being a girl," photographer David LaChapelle—one of her longtime mentors—once told me. "She wants to be a drawing of a girl, a cartoon like Jessica Rabbit. When I told her that silicone is dangerous, she said, 'I don't care, as long as I look beautiful in the coffin.' There's something kind of profound in that, that she's creating this moment of beauty for herself and is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice." Amanda's music also takes pains to serve a challenging product that, in its post-Warholian way, sardonically comments on capitalism while wholeheartedly embracing it. Playing a ditz comes naturally to her (she sang "I Know What Boys Like" for Another Gay Movie and "My Hair Looks Fierce" on her first album, 2005's Introducing…Amanda Lepore), but it's a pose, a winky attempt to portray a sort of modern day Ann-Margret, albeit one who once had a penis.?/?Usually, Amanda would rather sing about more important things than just boys and hair—like her privates! Her 2007 club hit "My Pussy (Is Famous)" giddily reminded the world that, while it arrived without a pricetag on it, her fertile crescent is now worth millions.

Bootsy Collins - B.B. King Blues Club & Grill

Bootsy Collins is the Man Who Put Bass In Yer Face -- the original funk `n' roll wild child, the Godzilla-toned high minister of the all-powerful "one," a sly dog who -- with his trademark psychedelic stovepipe, knee-high platform boots and star-studded bass guitars -- makes the Cat in the Hat look tame. Inspired by Jimi Hendrix and tutored by no less an authority on the big beat than James Brown, Bootsy has stomped his way through the last 40 years of music history and lived the high life. He has been inducted into the Rock `n' Roll Hall of Fame along with the other members of Parliament-Funkadelic. And yet, after spraying outer space bass all over classic recordings by the Godfather of Soul, P-Funk, and his own trail-blazing groups -- including Bootsy's Rubber Band, the Sweat Band and Praxis -- Bootsy has arrived at a kind of Zen-like balance that he credits for inspiring his new album Bootsy Collins "Tha Funk Capital of the World". "The secret that I learned," he explains from Bootzilla Word Headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio, "is that you can not tell the Universe what to do. When the Universe is ready, it will tell you -- and then you got to be ready. And when the Universe told me it was time to record my new album, Lord, I was ready!" So was an elite coterie of Bootsy's friends, a blend of musicians and cultural giants who took up temporary residence in Tha Funk Capital of the World to help the illustrious Mr. Collins create a collective masterpiece so full of grooves, grit, guts and glory that he calls it "the best thing I've ever done -- a whole new chapter in the life of Bootsy." His booty shakin' co-authors include a staggering A-list of real-life heroes: the scholar Dr. Cornell West, the activist Rev. Al Sharpton, the actor Samuel Jackson, rappers Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg and Chuck D, P-Funkers George Clinton and Bernie Worrell, percussionist Sheila E., R&B legend Bobby Womack and guitarists Buckethead and Catfish Collins -- the latter Bootsy's brother and longtime six-string foil, who passed away during the disc's making. From the opening "Hip Hop @ Funk U" to the closing "The Munchies 2011," Bootsy Collins' "Tha Funk Capital of the World" is a percolating playground of soul-deep rhythms and layered melodies punctuated by lyrics that range from meditations on the nature of truth to the joys of fun-loving hipness to spiritual transcendence. And while Bootsy's bass is the album's heartbeat, it's his voice that brims with giddy delight, goosing up the blissed-out vibe. As much as "Tha Funk Capital of the World" stays sonically in Partytown, many of its songs do reveal higher ambitions. "Freedumb" features Dr. West testifying about the deceptions and distractions of the modern world while Bootsy brings his thunder, and "Minds Under Construction" is Bootsy's ode to the creative potential of youth. "Young people have so much intelligence and ambition and desire, and we need to help them harness that and express it, instead of letting them become lost under the weight of poverty or drugs or the other pressures of today," Bootsy explains. "There are real messages on this album that I wanted to share, and, again, that idea of being open to the Universe, of just getting in the zone and letting the songs and the ideas come right through me, was so important in realizing that." "Mirrors Tell Lies," which samples Jimi Hendrix's song "Roomful of Mirrors," is a dream-come- true for the head chancellor of Funk U. "To be able to share a stage or a song with Jimi was something I fantasized about as a young man listening to him on cassettes while I rode in James Brown's bus between gigs," he says. "And suddenly, just as I'm about to turn 59 years old, it happens." Another zenith is "Still the Man," a Brown biography authored and rapped as a sermon by Rev. Sharpton. It's a thoughtful and heavily funky analysis of Brown's style and impact, set to a groove plucked from the same bag as "Super Bad," "Soul Power" and "Sex Machine," classics Bootsy and Catfish helped put the shake to during their early '70s tenure in Brown's band the J.B.'s. "In a way, Mr. Brown is the biggest influence on this whole album," says Bootsy. "When I joined his band, he took me under his wing and taught me about the business, but the most important thing he taught me about was the `one' -- the downbeat that always drove his music and is the engine for all great funk. "What's funny about that is, I was a guitar player before I joined Mr. Brown's band, and I wanted to play bass like Jimi Hendrix. Eventually, that's exactly what I did, adding effects and freeing up the instrument to go anywhere I imagined it could go, and that's how Bootsy became Bootsy. But Mr. Brown wanted me to just keep it simple and keep on hitting that `one.' I used to grumble about it, but today I'm thankful.

"Recently I've been volunteering to teach music to young people, and all they really want to know about is how to really get on that `one.' And in 2008 I did a James Brown tribute tour, and I found myself just getting back to the really basic, driving old-school way that Mr. Brown wanted me to play. I loved it! That led me to be open to that sound and style as the foundation of Bootsy Collins' "Tha Funk Capital of the World" when these songs started coming to me." Ultimately, though, there was a bigger lesson in James Brown's music, and in Jimi Hendrix's, which Bootsy absorbed and applied to everything -- his image, his sound, his style and all 22 of his earlier albums as a leader. What he heard from his inspirations wasn't just driving beats and high-flying sonic architecture, but freedom. "What all of this -- my music, my life -- is about, is liberty," Bootsy explains. "It's about pursuing the sounds and ideas and things that you believe in and that you feel. The best music urges you to open your mind and your heart and take a bigger look at the world and what you can bring to it. That's really what Bootsy Collins' "Tha Funk Capital of the World" trying to teach."

Jonny Lang started playing the guitar at the age of twelve, after his father took him to see the Bad Medicine Blues Band, one of the few blues bands in Fargo, North Dakota. Lang soon started taking guitar lessons from Ted Larsen, the Bad Medicine Blues Band's guitar player. Several months after Lang began, he joined the Bad Medicine Blues Band, which was then renamed Kid Jonny Lang & The Big Bang.

The band moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota and independently released the album Smokin' when Lang was fourteen. Lang was signed to A&M Records in 1996. He released the critically acclaimed multi-platinum Lie to Me on January 28, 1997. The next album, Wander this World was released on October 20, 1998 and earned a Grammy nomination. This was followed by the more soulful Long Time Coming on October 14, 2003. Lang also made a cover of Edgar Winter's "Dying to Live". Lang's newest album, the gospel-influenced Turn Around, was released in 2006, and most recently won Lang his first Grammy Award.

In more than ten years on the road, Lang has toured with the Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy, Aerosmith, B.B. King, Blues Traveler, Jeff Beck and Sting. In 1999, he was invited to play for a White House audience including President and Mrs. Clinton. Lang also makes a cameo appearance in the film Blues Brothers 2000 as a janitor. In 2004, Eric Clapton asked Lang to play at the Crossroads Guitar Festival to raise money for the Crossroads Centre Antigua.

Catch Jonathan Butler's heartfelt music for our season kick off on Wednesday, June 29th aboard the intimate Smooth Cruise setting. Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, Jonathan Butler spent his youth under the shroud of apartheid, and official government policy of political, legal, and economic discrimination against non-whites. His escape was music.

The youngest of twelve children, he began singing publicly in South African townships at the tender age of seven. Not yet in his teens, Butler's talents as a singer and guitarist were recognized and he soon found himself touring his poverty stricken country in a traveling variety show. In his travels, the young entertainer could neither comprehend the extreme destitute nor the harsh treatment he endured and bared witness to under the reign of Apartheid. Afrikaans was his native tongue, but he learned English on the road.

After signing his first record deal as a teenager with British record producer Clive Caulder's Jive Records, Jonathan's premier single made him the first by a black artist to be played on white South African radio stations. The single won a Sarie Award, the South African equivalent to a Grammy award. His self-titled debut album also put him on the map internationally and garnered two Grammy nominations; one for the R&B-pop vocal statement "Lies" and the other for "Going Home," a poignant instrumental. Recent releases include Gospel Goes Classical in 2006 with Juanita Bynum, Brand New Day in 2007, and his latest, So Strong in 2010. His most recent album touches on his prior year with the loss of his mother as well as of one of his closest friends (Wayman Tisdale), and his support of his wife Barenese in her battle against cancer. Referring to So Strong, the talented artist noted, "It's been a tough year. It's been trying and challenging, but we' re still standing." A testimony to his uplifting and inspirational spirit.

Brian Carpenter's Ghost Train Orchestra performs unearthed music mined from the dusty vaults of a basement record collection, new arrangements of "voodoo music" and spirited stomps from the most incredible of... the late 1920s Chicago and Harlem jazz bands. Their debut album "Hothouse Stomp" was released this spring on Accurate Records.

On behalf of the Korea Society, I'd like to invite you to this month's episode in our Contemplative Traditional Music Series: Enjoy a meditative hour of stringed kayagum set to p’ungnyu, the classical ensemble music of Korean nobility and central theme of our spring/summer perfromance series. The Korea Society here presents p’ungnyu in its chul-p’ungnyu (stringed-instrument) form. P’ungnyu also refers to a state of leisure when one is elevated from the mundane to better appreciate poetry, music and companionship. Park Yoon-suk, founder and president of the twenty-year-old Korean Traditional Music and Dance Institute of New York, opens with a Kayagum sanjo. Before her arrival in the United States, Park spent more than two and a half decades studying kayagum, p’ansori, and dance with many of Korea’s leading artists. Ms. Park won numerous awards and performed over 1,800 concerts across Asia and the United States, including a solo recital at Carnegie Hall. Picturing Science: Museum Scientists and Imaging Technologies, an exhibition of more than 20 sets of striking large-format prints, showcases advanced imaging technologies used by scientists at the American Museum of Natural History and reveals once-hidden, intricate details of both natural phenomena and cultural artifacts. The exhibition features images that were created in pursuit of scientific knowledge but also resulted in visually arresting art. It explores how such imaging technologies -- including infrared photography, scanning electron microscopy, and computed tomography (CT) -- make it possible to examine and analyze a range of specimens at levels of detail previously unimaginable, advancing science and providing new insights into the visual splendor of the universe.
