Gil Scott-Heron with Special Opener Derrick Hodge - Central Park Mainstage
June 27, 2010 -

Widely acknowledged as the matrix from which hip-hop and neo-soul emerged, the poetry, music and performance of Gil Scott-Heron was a guiding force throughout the late 60s and 70s. Scott-Heron's transgressive, politicized, spoken-word-meets-jazz recordings, including "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", "Whitey on the Moon", "The Bottle" and "Small Talk at 125th and Lennox", have been covered, sampled, referenced, deified and parodied by generations of artists, including Labelle, Public Enemy and Talib Kweli. 2010 saw the release of I’m New Here, Scott-Heron's first release in thirteen years. SPIN called I’m New Here, "not so much a comeback as a testament to spiritual resilience." That resilience will be on full display with a set featuring material from the new album and classic songs from Scott-Heron's 1970s catalog.

OnSmash Invasion Presents: JAY ELECTRONICA & JOELL ORTIZ, CyHi DA PRYNCE, STS - Highline Ballroom
June 29, 2010 -

Doors at 7:00pm, Show at 8:00pm. $20. One of the most talked-about rappers of 2008, Jay Electronica built his reputation via the Internet and word of mouth, without so much as a single commercial release to his credit. Born Je'Ri Allah in 1976, he grew up in the Magnolia projects of New Orleans, where he lived until age 19. In the years that followed, he lived a nomadic lifestyle, moving back and forth between Atlanta, New York, Detroit, and Baltimore, among other cities. He adopted the Jay Electronica alias while living in Baltimore circa 2000. While in Detroit, he befriended associates of J Dilla, working closely with engineer Mike "Chav" Chavarria and collaborating with producer Denaun Porter (aka Mr. Porter). As a rapper, he distributed his recordings via the Internet, primarily his /MySpace page. Among these Internet-circulated recordings, a few stood out and helped create a buzz: "Act 1," an epic homemade rap over Jon Brion's score for the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind; "Bitches and Drugs," a J Dilla production; "Extra Extra," a Madlib production; and the StyleWars EP. The word of mouth didn't hurt, either, as Erykah Badu, Just Blaze, Nas, and others spoke highly of Jay Electronica in the media.

West, Bruce jr. & Laing features original band members Leslie West and Corky Laing and very special guest Malcolm Bruce, sitting in for his father Jack Bruce. Frontman and legendary guitarist West commented, "Playing with Jack Bruce was the thrill of a lifetime. Playing with his son Malcolm has given Corky and me, a second chance to recreate this music." Drummer Laing added, "As a hockey-loving Canadian, I can liken it to this.I feel like I am scoring a Hat Trick. After playing with Felix Pappalardi and Jack Bruce and now with Malcolm Bruce, I feel like the game is just beginning." Originally formed in 1972, with core members of two historic groups, West, Bruce & Laing featured lead singer/guitarist Leslie West and drummer Corky Laing from Mountain along with bassist Jack Bruce from Cream. West, Bruce & Laing's debut album WHY DONTCHA, released in 1972, won the hearts of critics and fans alike and featured the massive hit single of the same name. The group only performed 63 shows in the United States and Europe (selling out venues such as Radio City Music Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York City) and released one more studio album in 1973, WHATEVER TURNS YOU ON. Manu Katche Third Round - Highline Ballroom
July 01, 2010 -

He studied piano from the age of 5, switching to drums at 14 and studying classical percussion at the Conservatoire National Supérieure de Musique de Paris. He has often said that his drum style is essentially an amalgam of African rhythm concepts and classical drumming, illuminated by the in-the-moment interaction of jazz. "When I play jazz I get called a 'rock drummer'. When I do rock projects, critics write about 'the jazz drummer Manu Katché'. But I'm just being myself, trying to be innovative as the music is played, and I guess that is more of a 'jazz' attitude."

Celebration: The Birthday in Chinese Art - Metropolitan Museum of Art
Through August 15, 2010 - Manhattan

Birthday celebrations and concomitant themes of longevity are pervasive in Chinese art of the Ming and Qing dynasties. A recurring scene of a splendid reception at the residence of a wealthy family, represented in a lacquered screen, a set of embroidered hanging scrolls, and a porcelain vase, shows the eightieth birthday gathering for the Tang-dynasty general Guo Ziyi, a popular figure of long life, wealth, and honor. Longevity is also encoded in peaches, cranes, immortals, and flora and fauna of many kinds, sometimes forming sophisticated visual word play expressing wishes of long life for the honoree. The exhibition will draw together works in many media from the Museum's collection to illuminate these auspicious themes.
