New York City is not only home to great cultural institutions, shops and events; it's also a place where there are plenty of things to do outside. Wild Wine, Beer & Food Safari - Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo

Join us for a fantastic, adults-only fundraiser at the Zoo featuring food from local restaurants plus the latest in wine and beer selections. Tickets are $50 per person; groups of six or more are $45 each. Tickets are $55 at the door. Enjoy a VIP experience that includes a behind-the-scenes tour from 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM for $100 per person. VIP tickets must be purchased in advance. The evening includes entertainment and an amazing silent auction. Don't miss this expedition of taste while supporting Connecticut's only Zoo! “HONORING THEIR SACRIFICE” - Green-Wood Cemetery Historic Chapel
Through June 12, 2011 -

The Green-Wood Historic Fund is proud to present “Honoring Their Sacrifice,” a special multi-media exhibition featuring never-before-seen Civil War artifacts and fascinating memorabilia gathered from private collections, as well as from the Green-Wood Historic Fund collections. The exhibit, in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel, is free and open to the public from Saturday, May 28, 2011 through Sunday, June 12, 2011. Visitors are welcome on weekdays from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. and from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on weekends.

Many of the artifacts have never been on public display. The exhibition includes two authentic Civil War cannons, life-sized zinc sculptures of Union soldiers, an authentic Civil War uniform, letters written by soldiers in battle, cartes de visite portraits of Civil War soldiers, a Confederate flag captured by Pvt. George Dick of the 13th NY Heavy Artillery, and much more. Visitors will also learn the tales of bravery and patriotism of the Civil War soldiers interred at Green-Wood. More than 4,600 Civil War veterans have been identified at the Cemetery.

Brooklyn’s Historic Green-Wood Cemetery will serve as a Civil War Sesquicentennial Headquarters in New York as our nation marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. In honor of this historic milestone, the Green-Wood Historic Fund will host a series of commemorative events throughout the 2011 Memorial Day weekend.

Spanish Paradise: Gardens of the Alhambra - New York Botanical Garden

The lush gardens and poetic vistas of the Alhambra -- a legendary Moorish palace and fortress in Granada, Spain -- are re-imagined in NYBG's large-scale, multipart summer exhibition.The exhibit includes a 15,000-square-foot interpretation of Alhambra's gardens in the landmark Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, curated by world-renowned garden writer, designer, and historian Penelope Hobhouse. Closed Mon.

National Geographic Crittercam: The World Through Animal Eyes - Mystic Aquarium
Through December 31, 2011 -

Swim through tropical landscapes with turtles, dive beneath the ice with penguins and forage in the forest with a family of bears — experience life as animals do in a new exhibition opening February 9, 2011 at Mystic Aquarium. Through interactive displays, firsthand footage and evocative environments, visitors to the exhibit can explore the many stories and animals that are part of the science and adventure of Crittercam. The exhibit focuses on Crittercam’s deployment on seals and sea lions, sharks, sea turtles, whales, penguins, bears and lions.

Writing the Garden: A Collection of Books from The New York Society Library and Elizabeth Barlow Rogers, Principal Founder of the Central Park Conservancy.

Books on display span more than 150 years and opening fresh vistas into the World of Gardens.

Writing the Garden will feature works by remarkable gardeners who wrote with great knowledge and deep passion stemming from their love of nature, plants, and horticulture.
