A Prairie Home Companion With Garrison Keillor - The Town Hall

Join host Garrison Keillor -- Guy Noir, Dusty and Lefty, and the News from Lake Wobegon -- as PHC returns to The Town Hall stage.

Complexions Contemporary Ballet - Joyce Theater

"Fabulous bodies doing fabulous things," says The New York Times about Complexions. The company's Joyce fall season showcases a world premiere created by Dwight Rhoden to pay tribute to co-Artistic Director Desmond Richardson, who has announced that 2011-2012 will be his final year as a touring performer with Complexions. The work will be performed by Richardson to a commissioned score by the sensational jazz composer and pianist Eric Lewis. Also on the program—another new work by Dwight Rhoden set to the music of hot contemporary artists like Adele, Duffy, and Kings of Leon, as well as audience favorites, including Moon Over Jupiter and Moody Booty Blues.

The Barnard Project: Ivy Baldwin, Sidra Bell, David Parker, Susan Rethorst - New York Live Arts

The Barnard Project was the first university partnership of its kind, pairing curated artists from a renowned presenting institution, Dance Theater Workshop, with Barnard College and Columbia University dance students in a semester-long residency environment. Since its inception the program has commissioned 26 new works. Now in its seventh year, The Barnard Project offers choreographers and their selected casts the opportunity to work in a laboratory setting that emphasizes shared process. The resulting new works by 2011 – 2012 artists Ivy Baldwin, Sidra Bell, David Parker, and Susan Rethorst will premiere at New York Live Arts.

Martha Clarke - Angel Reapers - Joyce Theater

The always astounding MacArthur Award winner Martha Clarke teams up with Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Alfred Uhry to collaborate on an evening-length dance/theater/music piece about forbidden sex and unchanneled lust in New England's 18th century Shaker community. Inspired by the life of Ann Lee, founder of the Shaker movement, the piece envisions the hysteria of human passion gone awry. "Notable for its mesmerizing qualities... Angel Reapers is a beautifully wrought illustration of repression and freedom." Durham News and Observer

Beginner Flamenco Singing Class-Fall Session - Flamenco Latino

Flamenco Latino offers a new class in Cante (flamenco singing) for beginners. Most classes will be led by Alfonso Cid with a couple of sessions led by Basilio Georges and Aurora Reyes on the established material.

In this course, students will learn the basics of flamenco singing, emphasizing diaphragmatic breathing and voice placement or “impostatción.” The class will start building upon basic cante repertoire such as sevillanas, tangos,fandangos and rumbas. The class will also focus on flamenco rhythms and handclapping, flamenco scales and terminology so students can communicate in the traditional lingo with guitarists and flamenco dancers.

Lyrics and translations of the “letras” will be provided. The course is taught in English, and no previous knowledge of music or Spanish is required. It is ideal for people who want to deepen their understanding of flamenco music or for flamenco dancers who want to broaden their experience of this art form.

Technique and choreography for dances that use... -- castanets and Sombrero Cordoves. For example, Tanguillos de Cadiz, and Garrotin (hat only) dances. --Abanico (fan) as in such dances as Guajiras (fan + castanets) and Caracoles (fan only). -- manton (shawl) used in Solea and Seguiriya.

We plan to rotate palos. We have extra fans, mantons, hats and castanets at the studio in case you forget yours!
