Kevin Spacey to Host 2017 Tony AwardsApril 18, 2017 - by Griffin Miller, Theatre Editor
Radio City Music Hall will be welcoming Kevin Spacey back into Broadway’s inner circle on June 11th, when he steps onto the iconic stage as host of the 71st Annual Tony Awards.
A Tony winner in 1991 (Best Featured Actor in a Play: Lost in Yonkers), Spacey hasn’t been seen on Broadway since 2007 when he starred in Moon for the Misbegotten. And even while he was taking his bows alongside Eve Best in the O'Neill classic he was serving as artistic director at London's The Old Vic (2003-2013). Most recently Spacey scooped up a Golden Globe and a couple of SAG awards (plus several Emmy nominations) for his applauded turn as Frank Underwood in the original Netflix series House of Cards.
Citing the two films for which he took home Oscars, Spacey quipped, “I was their second choice for Usual Suspects, fourth choice for American Beauty, and 15th choice to host this year's Tony Awards. I think my career is definitely going in the right direction. Maybe I can get shortlisted to host the Oscars if everyone else turns it down.”
Since hosts of the Tonys—make that pretty much any award show—are generally called upon to sing their way through one or two live production numbers, it’s nice to know that Spacey already proved he can do more than just carry a tune when he played and sang Bobby Darin in the film Beyond the Sea.
“We are thrilled to have Kevin, who has mastered the Broadway stage, the big and small screens, and the West End, host this year’s Tony Awards,” Charlotte St. Martin, President of The Broadway League, and Heather A. Hitchens, President of the American Theatre Wing, said in a joint statement, going on to note that “his spirit and passion for live theatre” add to the energy he’ll bring to Tony night.
As for Tony nominations, Broadway favorites/Tony winners Christopher Jackson and Jane Krakowski will be announcing them on Tuesday, May 2nd live from the New York City Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. (The official eligibility cut-off date is next Thursday, April 27th.)
