How to Ride a Vintage Subway in NYC

Subway and bus passengers can take a ride into the past this December 2015, as New York's MTA offers holiday rides on its fleet of vintage subways and buses. From now through December 27, nostalgia fans can enjoy a vintage ride for just the price of a Metrocard swipe.

On Sundays in December, subway passengers can take a ride on the “Shoppers Special.” The vintage train consists of eight passenger cars from the 1930’s that ran on the lettered subway lines until 1977, featuring incandescent light bulbs, roll signs for passenger information, rattan seats, and ceiling fans. Customers can catch the train on December 20 and 27, where it will be running on the M subway line, making local stops between Second Ave. and Queens Plaza from 10am-5pm.

Bus passengers can also enjoy a nostalgic trip, as the weekday daytime service on the M42 line features a fleet of vintage buses from the late 1940’s-1980’s through December 18. The fleet will run from 9am-5pm (weather permitting) down 42nd Street from First Ave. to Twelfth Ave.

Holiday shoppers with a penchant for vintage travel can check out the New York Transit Museum’s special pop-up shop during the special holiday subway service, which will be set up at the Second Avenue station. And those who want to check out these vintage vehicles without hopping on can do so as well; vintage buses will be on display at Union Square, Herald Square, and the Circle Line Terminal.
