Working Harbor Committee Announces 6th annual Working Harbor Day celebration featuring Hidden Harbor Tours® in partnership with Circle Line Downtown.

May 13, 2008 - by Ellis Whitman

All day event at South Street Seaport Museum includes half-price harbor tours, music and maritime events for adults and children.

•    Working Harbor Day – 18 May 2008 – 10 AM to 6 PM
•    Pier 16 at the end of Fulton Street at South Street Seaport Museum

This year’s annual Working Harbor Day will be on Sunday 18 May from 10 AM to 6 PM at the South Street Seaport Museum’s Pier 16. It is organized by the Working Harbor Committee, in association with Circle Line Downtown and South Street Seaport Museum. Pier 16 is located at the end of Fulton Street and East River.

The day long celebration will feature, as always, 90-minute Hidden Harbor Tour’s of New York Harbor’s exciting and vibrant working maritime waterfront from the Brooklyn Navy yard to the busy ship channel called Kill Van Kull between Staten Island and Bayonne, NJ. Riders will see close up giant container ship ports, shipyards, tugboat yards, dry docks and graving docks, automobile ship terminals, cruise ship docks & much more.

These narrated trips are half-price (ranging from $8 to $14) on Working Harbor Day only and are on the ultra-luxurious sightseeing yacht ZEPHYR (except for the 10 AM tour which is on Patriot), both vessels from Circle Line Downtown. Departures are every 2 hours, alternating between the Brooklyn waterfront (Noon and 4 PM) and the Staten Island/New Jersey waterfront (10 AM and 2 PM). The full schedule is as follows:

•    10 AM - Staten Island & New Jersey (Kill Van Kull, Global & Military Ocean Terminals)
•    Noon - Brooklyn Working Waterfront (Brooklyn Navy Yard to Eire Basin)
•    2 PM - Staten Island & New Jersey (Same as 10 AM tour)
•    4 PM - Brooklyn Working Waterfront (Same as Noon tour)

Captain John Doswell, the event organizer and chief harbor narrator said “The sightseeing vessel ZEPHYR is a large, luxurious sightseeing boat with 3 levels for passengers, 2 full bars and light food, and a capacity of over 500 - but we never go beyond 350 to keep it comfortable.”

For tickets, visit www.WorkingHarbor.Org and for more about Circle Line Downtown and its boats, visit www.CircleLineDowntown.Com.

In addition, there will be a special South Street Seaport Museum admission of $3, which includes many enjoyable activities for children. Learn seamanship skills such as knot tying & create your own knot board to take home. Plus visitors can take a “Pirate Sail” aboard the Museum’s historic schooner Pioneer - or meet a traditional woodcarver, try their hand tossing a dock line or just listen to music at the free activities on Pier 16.

For information call the Museum at 212-748-8786, visit or email

Finally, to cap the day off properly, there will be a special 2-hour Sunset Hidden Harbor Tour® at 6 PM, also on ZEPHYR. This tour includes both the Brooklyn and Staten Island / New Jersey waterfronts with a pause at the Statue of Liberty for sunset – and features one free drink for each passenger. “This will be the first of a series of evening Sunset Hidden Harbor Tours from 6 to 8 PM.” said Bill Buckley, of Circle Line Downtown. “After this, they will be on selected Tuesday evenings from June to September”
