Best of NYC Soup Dumplings: Shanghai Cuisine (Chinatown)

You’ll find an extensive dim sum menu at Shanghai Cuisine, packed with steamed, pan-fried, and deep-fried appetizers…but when it comes to placing your order, it’s the Shanghai Pork Soup Dumplings, Shanghai Shrimp & Pork Soup Dumplings, and Shanghai Crab Meat & Pork Soup Dumplings that you want to try first and foremost. Served in batches of six, doubling or tripling up on these dumplings is always a fantastic idea. 89 Bayard St., 212-732-8988

Joe’s Shanghai has been serving up their popular soup dumpling for over two decades, and these freshly made-to-order pouches are still the restaurant’s best-selling item. Diners can order either crab meat or pork meat soup dumplings, both of which are served in batches of eight in a bamboo steamer and cooked to perfection. One bite of these soup dumpling and you’ll know exactly why Joe’s Shanghai has earned its coveted reputation. Want to mix things up a bit with your soup dumplings? Then head to The Bao. Along with offering Super Spicy Steamed Buns and Wasabi Steamed Buns (talk about a kick in the taste buds), this famed Chinese joint also serves Chocolate Steamed Buns for those who are feeling extra adventurous. And if you feel like keeping things classic, no need to worry either, because The Bao’s Kung Fu Steamed Pork Buns and Steamed Crab Meat Pork Buns do their job well. 13 St. Marks Pl., 212-388-9238

Best of NYC Soup Dumplings: RedFarm (West Village)

RedFarm

If you’re ready and willing to shell out a few extra bucks, then head over to RedFarm for an order of their Pork & Crab Soup Dumplings. While only four dumplings are included in the order, they’re each stuffed with meat and overflowing with a rich, soup base that will leave you blissfully content in a Dim Sum food coma. Be sure to visit frequently for daily specials, because if you’re lucky you might just show up on a day when they’re serving Black Truffle & Chicken Soup Dumplings (yes, they really do exist). Additional location in the Upper West Side. 529 Hudson St., 212-792-9700, redfarmnyc.com

Best of NYC Soup Dumplings: 21 Shanghai House (Chinatown)

For $6 a basket (and that’s a basket of 8 dumplings!), 21 Shanghai House provides a delicious bang for its buck. Their soup dumplings are a tad smaller than the average, but in our opinion that just makes for less spilling and more slurping. Packed with flavor, the Pork Soup Dumplings are a must for those wanting to warm up their insides and satisfy their bellies. Go ahead, get a second order, we aren’t judging. 21 Division St., 212-226-8998
