The Best of TV and Film Inspired Hangouts in NYC

Film and television fanatics might be surprised to know that New York City is home to a handful of bars and restaurants that are inspired by some of America’s (and Britain’s) most beloved entertainment. Beetlejuice, Golden Girls, Doctor Who, and Point Break are just some of the big hitters that have inspired bar and restaurant owners in the city that never sleeps. Want to get in on the action? Check out these five TV and film inspired hangouts below.

Best of NYC TV & Film Inspired Hangouts: Beetle House (East Village)

Beetle House

You’re either a Tim Burton fan or you’re not—there’s really no middle ground. If you are a fan, then Beetle House will have you feeling giddy in no time. Inspired by the film works of Tim Burton, the music of The Cure, and the art of Salvador Dali, Beetle House has a gothic feel to it that perfectly matches its personal slogan of “it’s Halloween all year long.” Purple lights, Burton-inspired artwork, and an enormous Betelgeuse tombstone are just some of the unique décor that you’ll stumble upon once you make your way inside. 308 E. 6th St., 646-510-4786, beetlehousenyc.com

Best of NYC TV & Film Inspired Hangouts: The Way Station (Brooklyn)

Way Station

Doctor Who might be a British phenomenon, but that hasn’t stopped The Way Station from bringing in thousands of American fans to its Brooklyn haunt. You’ll find everything here from a TARDIS-themed bathroom (debatably the most photographed bathroom in the world) to a sonic screwdriver beer pull. As for the cocktail menu? It’s of course curated to served the biggest Whovians in New York City. Order up the 10th Doctor, 11th Doctor, or River’s Red Setting if you’d like. 683 Washington Ave., 347-627-4949, waystationbk.blogspot.com

Best of NYC TV & Film Inspired Hangouts: Rue La Rue Café (Washington Heights)

Rue La Rue

If Blanche Devereaux, Dorothy Zbornak, Sophia Petrillo, and Rose Nylund were your kind of girls (Golden Girls, to be exact), then you had better head up to Washington Heights to Rue La Rue Café. If you’re interested in the backstory, owner Michael LaRue was close friends with Rue McClanahan (Blanche Devereaux), and the café is decorated with all sorts of memorabilia from the beloved Golden Girls television show. From four different roasts named after each “girl” to bread bowl soups and desserts galore, make sure you arrive with an appetite. 4396 Broadway, 917-521-0820, Rue La Rue Cafe Facebook page

Best of NYC TV & Film Inspired Hangouts: Point Break (Midtown West)

Point Break

Point Break pays homage to the 1991 surfer action flick that shares its lovely name. While it was formerly known as Nation, in the summer of 2010 this bar rebranded itself as Point Break, bringing in coastal décor and memorable menu items (Chicken Teriyaki Dumplings, Venice Beach Panini, and the Bayou Burger… just to name a few). Along with its exposed brick walls, you’ll find surfboards, framed film stills, and hanging string lights all around this cinematic three-level bar. 12 W. 45th St., 212-391-8053, pointbreaknyc.com

Best of NYC TV & Film Inspired Hangouts: The Lately (Chelsea)

Mad Men Twin Peaks The Lately

Fans of both Mad Men and Twin Peaks will want to make their way to The Lately, which opened March 2017. This cocktail bar splits the difference between a bustling Madison Avenue aesthetic and a rural Washington state atmosphere (leaning a little on the latter). The bar will spread across a 3,400-square foot space, mixing modernity and rustic vibes. New but classic cocktails will be served alongside the likes of hot dogs with spicy cheddar chorizo and hot pretzels with beer mustard. 357 W. 16th St., 212-206-1096, thelatelybar.com
