Best of Guggenheim Summer | Jackson Pollock: Exploring Alchemy

Alchemy, Jackson Pollock’s 1947 work of postwar abstraction, will be on view in the United States for the first time since 1969, making it a must-see for those visiting the Guggenheim. You’ll find the famed work of art at the very top of the museum, and it’s worth the trek up the winding floors of the Guggenheim. Interestingly enough, Peggy Guggenheim provided Pollock with a monthly stipend during his lifetime, as well as commissioned a 20-foot-long mural for her own personal Upper East Side duplex. Jackson Pollock: Exploring Alchemy will be on view through September 6th, 2017.

Best of Guggenheim Summer | Guggenheim Collection: Brancusi

The Guggenheim’s collection of Constantin Brancusi (1876–1957) will be showcased in the museum’s gallery space. Brancusi’s work altered the trajectory of modern sculpture, and his work became an integral part of conversations between Marcel Duchamp, Henri Rousseau, other game-changing artists of his time. Brancusi’s sculptures often emphasize the base as much as the sculpture itself and are meant to be shown in direct relation with one another, instead of as individual works of art. Guggenheim Collection: Brancusi will be on view through January 3rd, 2018.

Best of Guggenheim Summer | Visionaries: Creating a Modern Guggenheim

Visionaries: Creating a Modern Guggenheim features over 170 modern works from the Guggenheim collection, including such iconic artists such as Alexander Calder, Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall, Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Fernand Léger, Piet Mondrian, Pabloc Picasso, Jackson Pollock, and Vincent van Gogh. Impressionist, post-impressionist, expressionist, abstract, surrealist, and modernist works will all be on display. Visionaries: Creating a Modern Guggenheim will be on view through September 6th, 2017.

Best of Guggenheim Summer | Doug Wheeler: PSAD Synthetic Desert III

Doug Wheeler’s PSAD Synthetic Desert III transforms part of the Guggenheim into an optical and acoustic experience. Creating a “semi-anechoic chamber,” this installation simultaneously minimizes noise and induces the impression of infinite space. Playing with light and sound, PSAD Synthentic Desert III creates a “hermetic realm” where spectators can spend time immersing themselves in the artist’s abstract experience of the natural world. Doug Wheeler: PSAD Synthetic Desert III will be on view through August 2nd, 2017.

Best of Guggenheim Summer | Lenka Clayton and Jon Rubin: …circle through New York

Lenka Clayton and Jon Rubin invited six city communities together to create unique collaborations that transcend the cultural, economic, geographic, and circumstantial boundaries through Harlem, the South Bronx, Queens, and Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The spaces include a pet store, high school, TV network, academic research institute, church, and, of course, the Guggenheim itself. Lenka Clayton and Jon Rubin: …circle through New York will be on view through August 31st, 2017 and can be viewed at any one of the six participating locations.
