ELEANOR REISSA LEAPS INTO THE WORLD OF AMERICAN CABARET AT NEW YORK'S METROPOLITAN ROOM.

"ELEANOR REISSA SINGS ENGLISH" PLAYS METROPOLITAN ROOM MAY 8 THROUGH MAY 22

New York, NY - May 1st, 2008 - The Tony-nominated director, singer and actress Eleanor Reissa is boldly going where everyone has gone before… except her: the American cabaret.  In her first solo show entirely in English, Reissa world premieres "Eleanor Reissa Sings English" (with nary a Yiddishism in sight).  The show performs on three consecutive Thursdays May 8, 15 and 22 at New York's white-hot concert venue The Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street.

Indulging her twin obsessions of Yiddish and English, the Brooklyn-born Reissa has straddled the English/Yiddish speaking worlds in the theatre for years-- from directing John Galsworthy and J.M. Barrie at the Mint Theater to starring in the much-lauded Folksbiene Yiddish Theatre production of Isaac Bashevis Singer's "Yentl" in 2002.  Her critically acclaimed one-woman show "Hip Heymish and Hot," seen at Merkin Hall and the John Houseman Theatre Off-Broadway, continues to tour, and she just finished directing "How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying" at the White Plains Performing Arts Center, running through May 11.

"Eleanor Reissa Sings English" explores American standards, rock, and blues, but all from her unique point of view -- that is the point of view of someone who, despite her affability, good looks and knack for cracking jokes, always perceived herself as a bit of an outsider.  Songs by Harold Arlen, Jules Styne, John Lennon/Paul McCartney and others help personalize her identity as an artist who has spent a career trying to balance her immigrant experience with her life as a fully blooded Yankee Doodle Dandy.  But no Yiddish!

She is joined by Jeff Klitz on piano, Ray Kilday on bass, and Warren Odze on drums, none of whom speaks Yiddish.

Reissa's Tony nomination was for directing "Those Were The Days," produced by Manny Azenberg.

"Eleanor Reissa Sings English" performs Thursdays May 8, 15 at 7:30pm and May 22 at 10pm.  The cover charge is $20.  The per-person minimum is $15.  So don't be a yutz and clear your schedule to experience this historic event.

The Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street, was voted New York's best cabaret (in any language) by New York Magazine in March.  For reservations call 212/206-0440.
