The Sachal Jazz Ensemble is a group of virtuosic master musicians from Pakistan who incorporate Eastern instruments such as sitar, sarod, tabla, and dholak into new interpretations of jazz standards that are informed by their own rich musical tradition. In this ground-breaking collaboration, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and the Sachal Jazz Ensemble will create and then premiere an entirely new composition, blending the sonorities of modern and ancient instruments and using the jazz form to integrate American values of blues and swing with sophisticated and highly-evolved Eastern music traditions. Oscar-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is filming the remarkable Sachal Jazz Ensemble for a documentary to be released in 2014, which will conclude with this highly anticipated JLCO collaboration. This project furthers JALC's commitment to cross-cultural understanding.

Protean saxophonist Chris Potter, called "one of the most studied (and copied) saxophonists on the planet" by DownBeat Magazine and "one of the best musicians around" by saxophone legend Dave Liebman, leads Underground, one of the freshest units of jazz today. The plugged-in quartet will present an expanded version of their works with acoustic elements.
