Springing from San Francisco's sexy, edgy circus underground, Vau de Vire Society includes classically trained dancers, acrobats, aerial artists, contortionists, circus sideshow acts, fire performers, and saucy cabaret go-gos. Accompanied by a raucous live orchestra, the alt-cabaret awe and titillate with just the right amount of grim glitter and hot antics. New York favorites Hungry March Band whip out Indian wedding songs, spitfire Balkan and Romany numbers, and good old New Orleans-style brass, taking it to the streets with good-natured anarchy. Happily disturbing the peace, the ban specializes in surprise radical encounters that transform the mundane into the miraculous. A premier exponent of the New Orleans jazz and blues piano traditions, the adventurous virtuoso Henry Butler teams up with trumpeter and crack arranger Steven Bernstein (Sex Mob, Millennial Territory Orchestra) in the newly formed Hot 9. Together, they dive into the roots of jazz and its predecessors, using Butler's percussive yet elegant playing and improvisation to power a fresh, brash sound. With master drummer Herlin Riley (Dr. John, Wynton Marsalis), they reframe classics by Bessie Smith and Fats Waller, alongside Butler's originals, walking the line between jazz's deep regional pedigree and the gleefully exploratory.
