Opening the Great Performers season, and the "Symphonic Masters" series, are two concerts in Avery Fisher Hall -- October 20 and 21 -- with the London Symphony Orchestra led by long-time guest conductor Bernard Haitink, and joined by pianist Emanuel Ax, in programs pairing Shostakovich and Mozart. The first concert pairs early works by the composers -- Shostakovich Symphony No. 4 with Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 9; the second concert, late works -- Shostakovich Symphony No. 15 with Mozart's final Piano Concerto, No. 27.
