This screening begins with German mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig performing a recital of Brahms lieder with her occasional accompanist Leonard Bernstein. Arleen Auger, the adored American soprano, follows with a live recording of songs by Mozart, Wolf, and Strauss. The program concludes with Strauss's Four Last Songs, performed in 1977 by soprano Lucia Popp with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Georg Solti.
