The 20th Anniversary season of New York City Center's Tony Award-winning Encores! series will open with Fiorello!, the show that launched the Encores! series in 1994. Fiorello! chronicles New York's Mayor LaGuardia's rise from an immigrant's son to the feisty congressman who brought down the crooked Tammany Hall political machine. (He's also the man singularly responsible for saving City Center from the wrecking ball and transforming it into Manhattan's first performing arts center.) Fiorello! has a book by Jerome Weidman and George Abbott; music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. It won the Tony Award for Best Musical and is one of only eight musicals to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Songs from the 1959 show include 'Little Tin Box,' 'Till Tomorrow,' 'Politics and Poker' and 'When Did I Fall In Love.'
Venue Description: Built in 1943, NY City Center was Manhattan's first performing arts center, dedicated by Mayor Fiorello La Guardia. Today, City Center is home to many distinguished companies, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, City Center's Principal Dance Company, as well as Manhattan Theatre Club and New York City Opera; a roster of renowned national and international visiting artists; and its own critically acclaimed and popular programs, including the Tony-honored Encores! musical theater series, Encores! Off-Center, the annual Fall for Dance Festival, and more.
