Nicholas McGegan, conductor. Flute soloist to be announced September 21.
BRITTEN An American Overture; IBERT Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, Op. 37; ELGAR Enigma Variations.
Praised by the New York Times for his "abundant zeal and affection," British conductor Nicholas McGegan returns to lead the Juilliard Orchestra, celebrating the centenary of fellow countryman Benjamin Britten by crossing the pond musically with the folksong-inspired An American Overture (1941), and Edward Elgar's brilliant Enigma Variations (1899), which the composer dedicated "to my friends pictured within." The program also features Jacques Ibert's warmly tonal and richly virtuosic Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, Op. 37 (1934)--a cornerstone of the 20th century flute repertoire and a widely-celebrated audience favorite.
