Add to Calendar 15-02-2013 08-05-2013 15 Gutai: Splendid Playground As part of the Guggenheim's Asian Art Program, the museum presents North America's first museum exhibition devoted to Gutai, the most influential artists' collective and artistic movement in postwar Japan and one of the most important international avant-garde movements of the 1950s and 1960s. Organized thematically and chronologically to explore Gutai's inventive approach to materials, process, and performativity, the exhibition explores the group's radical experimentation across a range of media and styles and demonstrates how individual artists pushed the limits of what art could be in a postatomic age. The spectrum of works includes painting, experimental performance and film, indoor and outdoor installation art, sound art, interactive or "playful" art, light art, and Kinetic art. The exhibition comprises some 120 objects by 25 artists on loan from museum and private collections in Japan, the United States, and Europe, and offers new scholarship, especially on so-called late Gutai works that date from 1965 to 1972. Gutai: Splendid Playground is organized by Ming Tiampo, Associate Professor of Art History, Carleton University, Ottawa, and Alexandra Munroe, Samsung Senior Curator of Asian Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. This exhibition is supported in part by The Japan Foundation and the Dedalus Foundation, Inc. The Leadership Committee for Gutai: Splendid Playground is gratefully acknowledged for its support. http://www.cityguideny.com/eventinfo.cfm?id=113334 Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum true DD/MM/YYYY

From February 15 to May 8, 2013, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum will present Gutai: Splendid Playground, a retrospective of the Gutai Art Association (1954–72), the radically inventive and influential Japanese artistic collective whose innovative and playful approaches to installation and performance yielded one of the most important international avant-garde movements to emerge after World War II. Based on fifteen years of research, Gutai: Splendid Playground provides a critical examination of both iconic and lesser-known examples of the collective's dynamic output over its two decade history and explores the full spectrum of Gutai’s creative production: painting, performance, installation art, sound art, experimental film, kinetic art, light art, and environment art. Gutai: Splendid Playground is the first North American museum exhibition devoted to the Gutai group and offers a comprehensive interpretation of the convention-defying movement.

Venue Description: Celebrated worldwide as one of the most noteworthy art museums and architectural icons of the 20th century, the Guggenheim Museum is all together an essential cultural center, an educational institution, as well as the heart of an international network of museums. Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic inverted ziggurat leads visitors through a series of interconnected rooms and requires them to retrace their steps when exiting. Visitors can experience special exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, lectures by artists and critics, performances and film screenings, classes for teens and adults, and daily tours of the galleries led by experienced docents. Founded on a collection of early modern masterpieces, the Guggenheim Museum today is an ever-increasing institution devoted to the art of the 20th century and beyond. Through extraordinary exhibitions, education programs, research initiatives, and publications, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation achieves its mission of promoting the understanding and appreciation of modern and contemporary art and architecture, and the collection, conservation, and observation of the art of our time.
