Brazilian native Antonio Carlos Gomes was the only non-European to be successful as an operatic composer in Italy during the golden age of opera. Most of his works premiered at La Scala and were performed at major opera houses throughout Europe and South America. Giuseppe Verdi praised Gomes’ music, proclaiming him a ‘musical genius.’ Gomes was arguably the greatest South American composer of the 19th Century. The Brazilian maestro’s music enjoyed great popularity during his lifetime. Today his work has been virtually forgotten outside of Latin America. The last US production of a Gomes opera occurred approximately twenty years ago, when the Washington National Opera staged Il Guarany for Gomes aficionado Placido Domingo. Opera Dolce believes that Gomes’ music should be performed much more frequently to win the recognition it deserves. The concerts will feature highlights from five of Gomes’ major operas: Fosca, Il Guarany, Salvator Rosa, Lo Schiavo and Maria Tudor. Some of these pieces will be receiving their North American premiere. Renowned Brazilian pianist Samuel Kardos will accompany six singers. The Brazilian Endowment for the Arts (BEA) will host a post-performance reception on April 16th at their gallery next door to the performance space. Tickets may be purchased for $25.00 at the door. Concerts dates, times and locations: April 16, 2013, 7:30 PM, EM Lee Concert Hall,244 East 52nd Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, NYC. April 18, 2013, 8:00 PM, Christ and St. Stephen’s Church, 122 West 69th Street, between Broadway and Columbus Avenue, NYC. http://www.cityguideny.com/eventinfo.cfm?id=126917 Christ and St Stephen's Church true DD/MM/YYYY
