Description: This exhibition comprises select pieces from Asia Society's Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection. The show explores the role of patrons of wealth and rank as dominating figures in the production of artistic creations. Approximately fifty examples of sculptureand ceramic from South, Southeast, and East Asia. The selection includes religious art, both Buddhist and Hindu. In addition, ceremonial objects that served as a visual structure for the governing patterns of patrons both for this life and beyond will be on view. Decorative functional objects such as plates and vases, and prized collectables like porcelains, which testify to the legitimacy and supremacy of rulers and aristocrats, round out the exhibition.
Venue Description: Open Tues.-Sun., 11am-6pm, with extended evening hours Fri. until 9pm. $10; $7 for seniors and $5 for students with ID; free for members and persons under 16. Admission is free on Fridays from 6-9pm (does not apply from July 1 through mid-September).
