Taking place only once a year, Family Day is MAD's biggest kid-friendly event and offers children (and their adult companions!) countless opportunities to create and explore. This year's Family Day is inspired by groundbreaking digital technologies showcased throughout the Museum's current exhibition Out of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital.

Starting at 10am, this day-long celebration of creativity and creation provides countless opportunities to explore, including workshops inspired by artworks featured in current exhibitions, docent-led tours, screenings of select feature films and animated shorts in MAD's theater, and a chance to speak with Open Studio Artists about their processes, materials and concepts while they work.

Inspired by artists Aranda/Lasch's 2011 "Bridges for Central Park," families will construct their own model bridges, using art straws and sketches. Finished designs will be photographed in front of printed images of Central Park landscapes.

Fractal Forces--Learn about the geometric patterns of fractals in Out of Hand. Each participant will color a series of triangle patterns forming their own fractal. Visitors' artworks will then be combined to form the largest fractal in the museum.

Kids and parents will work together to create a light-up plushie. Experimenting with power and resistance in a simple LED circuit, participants will create soft felt shapes lit by their completed circuits. This project gives families a unique hands-on opportunity to merge traditional fiber art with technology.

Venue Description: Open Tues.-Sun., 11am-6pm (Thurs. & Fri. until 9pm). $15; $12, students/seniors. Pay what you wish Thurs., 6-9pm.
