Kronos Quartet brings its globally-informed repertoire to the fore in this evening of contemporary explorations of age-old sounds and instruments. The night's pieces will include the world premiere of the quartet's collaboration with Madga Giannikou (on laterna), "Strope in Antistrophe," which reimagines the ancient call-and-response of Greek choruses to portray the counterpoint and blending of two radically different sonic propositions. Kronos will also join forces with Vietnamese multi-instrumentalist Van-Anh Vo, for the East Coast premiere of their collaborative work. Vo's mastery of her homeland's striking zithers, dulcimers, and percussion allows her to bring out remarkably contemporary elements, the perfect foil for Kronos' rich, versatile sound.
The Gloaming unites beloved icons of traditional Irish music (Dennis Cahill, Martin Hayes, pure-voiced Gaelic singer Iarla O'Lionaird) and young innovative voices (fiddler/Hardanger fiddler Caoimhin O Raghallaigh; pianist Thomas "Doveman" Barlett, whose other collaborations include David Byrne, The National, and Antony & the Johnsons). Keeping the melodic grounding, stately flourishes, and pulse of Irish music, this Irish roots supergroup finds unexpected twists and turns in this beloved tradition.
