The unprecedented three-decade career of the Hagen Quartet began in 1981. An exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon in its early years produced forty-five CDs, from which the distinctive profile of the Hagens emerged. The Quartet was recently recognized with the prestigious ECHO Klassik award as Ensemble of the Year and named Honorary Member of Vienna’s Konzerthaus.
The Hagen’s rare New York City appearance with a six-concert series at 92Y marks its first occurrence performing the complete cycle of Beethoven’s quartets in North America. The Quartet chooses one or two quartets from the Early, Middle and Late periods for each concert, giving audiences the opportunity to hear how this single composer evolved the string quartet medium over the course of his life. By the end of 2013, the quartet will have performed the complete cycle in New York, London, Vienna, Tokyo, Paris, Austria and Germany. The Hagen's concerts have been critically acclaimed across the globe, in addition to an album release of Beethoven's String Quartets last spring which was hailed as "insightful, probing, masterly" by The Guardian.
