DYMAX REDUX provides a modern take on Buckminster Fuller’s iconic Dymaxion Map, a breakthrough in cartography when first published 70 years ago. In the exhibit, contemporary graphic designers, visual artists and citizen cartographers -- finalists in the DYMAX REDUX crowdsourcing design competition -- offer a variety of beautifully original, informative and radical projections onto Fuller’s original work. Using map as canvas, they explore a range of topics including deforestation, climate and atmospheric conditions, historic events, migration routes, water use, gun violence, urbanization, time zones and even lunar topography. A selection of Fuller's own maps will be displayed to provide background and context for the project.

The Dymaxion Map, also known as The Fuller Projection Map, is the only flat map of the entire surface of the Earth which reveals our planet as one island in one ocean, without any visually obvious distortion of the relative shapes and sizes of the land areas, and without splitting any continents.

DYMAX REDUX is presented by The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union, The Buckminster Fuller Institute and The Cooper Union Institute for Sustainable Design.
