Dance, art galleries, museums, lectures -- you name it, there are plenty of things to do in NYC. From the New York City Ballet, to Alvin Ailey, from performances at the Metropolitan Opera, to live music at Madison Square Garden, New York has it all. Here is a selection of what's going on in New York this week.

Tere O'Connor Dance - Dance Theater Workshop
Through November 14, 2009 -

In his new work, Tere O'Connor embraces the tension between fixed states and constant change as a fundamental ingredient in choreographic thought. With a focus on spanning this divide, O'Connor's complex movement networks will be interrupted by the spontaneous choreographic choices made by the dancers in each performance. The movement, lighting, music and set will shift from meticulous calculation to chance, connecting and disengaging, as the contours of the dance take shape. The work features an original score by longtime collaborator James Baker, lighting design by Michael O'Connor, and is performed by Hilary Clark, Daniel Clifton, Erin Gerken, Heather Olson, and Matthew Rogers.

Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company - The Joyce Theater
Through November 15, 2009 -

Not seen at The Joyce since 1996, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company returns with the NYC premiere of Serenade/The Proposition, one of a suite of works created in honor of the 2009 Abraham Lincoln bicentennial. The lively, colorful production is a spirited rumination on the very nature of history, evoked through a collage of text, video projections and beautifully deconstructed costumes. A stirring original score for piano, cello and voice is performed live, accompanying choreography that “flows ...like water finding its way through a winding stone wall” (The New York Times).

Inside Out - Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)
Through November 15, 2009 -

The human body unfolds as a surreal rock and roll fantasy in Inside Out, Swedish troupe Cirkus Cirkor's phantasmagoric journey into the outer reaches of inner life. Accompanied onstage by dub-punk-new wave-electro-inspired band Irya's Playground and featuring an outlandish mix of highly skilled acrobatics, musical theater, and spectacle, Inside Out boggles the mind by way of the body. Actors and acrobats course through veins, explode through space like uncoiled strands of DNA, and lunge across synapses to become the body electric. Breathtaking, poetic, and humorous, never before has there been such a fantastic, gravity-defying voyage.

Maria Hassabi- SoloShow - Performance Space 122
Through November 15, 2009 -

Performance Space 122 presents: Maria Hassabi- SoloShow "Gazing at this exquisitely designed living sculpture, you also feel your own body straining with Hassabi, and in the slow friction between these two views, mysterious emotions ignite." - Deborah Jowitt, The Village Voice Full review of Solo here: http://www.villagevoice.com/2009-09-29/dance/big-dance-theatre-goes-to-the-movies-maria-hassabi-cuts-a-rug/2

Part 2 of a diptych of two autonomous evening-long solos that play between opposing orientations. The performer moves from a solitary contemplation in Solo, to a devotion to 'show-culture' in SoloShow. Hassabi continues her rigorous exploration of representations of the female body - embedded within art history, pop culture, and the performance of daily life - dissolving into the physicality of contemporary dance. Performed alternately by Hassabi and Hristoula Harakas.

SoloShow:

In association with Performa 09 Thu, Nov 12 - Sun, Nov 15 Thu - Sat 8pm, Sun 6pm, Late shows Fri, Sat 10pm

Single ticket - $20, $15 (students/seniors/FIAF members)

Dana Dances on Stage: A Won Woman Show - The Bowery Poetry Club
November 19, 2009 -

Dana Dances on Stage: A Won Woman Show is a slick, upbeat and heartfelt story about a young girl Dana who struggles to deal with the hardship of growing up in the urban streets of the Bronx, New York. Set during the beginning of the hip-hop era, Dana has dreams of becoming a professional dancer and showing the world the talent that is waiting to burst out from within her soul. Her dream will be delayed as the twists and turns of life leaves Dana rethinking her life's path. Through love, loss, inner renewal and hardship, Dana ultimately finds more than one way to "dance". DJ Molecules/Earthronix will spin the music throughout the duration of the show.

Really Real - Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)
Through November 21, 2009 -

Last at BAM with the Bessie Award-winning Everywhere (2005 Next Wave Festival), Wally Cardona and company return with Really Real, a delicately calibrated exploration of our species. Balancing composer Phil Kline's affecting music with Cardona's architecturally exacting movements, his elegant and uncompromising troupe -- accompanied by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus -- mines the hard-wired forces that make us who we are.

As always with Cardona, each new dance builds subtly on the last; in Really Real, he hones in on the nuances of the individual caught in the collective. Never overt in his choreography, he transforms inventive spatial juxtapositions and seemingly simple actions into other-worldly expressions of what it means to be human.

Anna Halprin, Anne Collod & guests - parades & changes, replays - Dance Theater Workshop
Through November 21, 2009 -

In 1965, postmodern dance legend Anna Halprin's Parades & Changes shook the dance world by challenging conceptions of nudity, stillness, and the "ceremony of trust" (as Halprin named it) between performers and audience. Originally banned in the United States, Parades & Changes has not been staged here since 1967. Today, French choreographer Anne Collod, in dialogue with Anna Halprin and original composer Morton Subotnick, is restaging this seminal work, bringing a highly acclaimed group of American and European performers together to relive this masterpiece in its new form, parades & changes, replays.

Complexions Contemporary Ballet - The Joyce Theater
Through November 29, 2009 -

Eight daringly audacious women, seven powerful men, two visionary directors and one improbable dream equals 15 years of defying the odds. Complexions returns to The Joyce with its explosive signature style, wrought with athleticism, virtuosity and artistry. Artistic Directors Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson present two exhilarating programs with world premieres and repertory favorites showcasing their dynamic range of music: gospel, Chopin, 80s pop, an original score by jazz composer David Rozenblatt and the iconic sounds of U2. This performance is a celebration sizzling with passion, energy and joy!
