Billy Joel to be 'The Last Play at Shea'

The Rolling Stones. Simon and Garfunkel. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. The Police. Jethro Tull. And, of course, The Beatles. In addition to some phenomenal baseball moments for the New York Mets, including World Series in 1969, 1973, 1986 and 2000, Shea Stadium has been home to some remarkable concerts, as well as spectacles such as an appearance by Pope John Paul II. Well, 2008 is the final year for Shea, which opened in 1964, as the Mets move in next spring to the brand-new Citi Field, currently under construction beyond Shea's right field fence.

The Beatles began the concert tradition at Shea with one of their most famous live appearances on August 15, 1965. Now, Billy Joel brings down the curtain on that tradition with two shows, July 16 and 18. The shows quickly sold out, but presumably ticket services still have tickets available for the dedicated fan. Hopefully, 2009 will see the beginning of a new concert tradition at Citi Field.

The New York Mets begin their final Shea Stadium season April 8 at 1:10pm versus the rival Philadelphia Phillies. The final regular season game is scheduled for Sept. 28 versus the Florida Marlins. It's quite possible, however, that the Mets will be playing postseason baseball well into October.
