June 02, 2019 - New York

Over the course of a stellar career that has spanned more than 30 years, saxophonist Kenny Garrett has become the preeminent alto saxophonist of his generation. From his first gig with the Duke Ellington Orchestra (led by Mercer Ellington) through his time spent with musicians such as Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis, Garrett has always brought a vigorous yet melodic, and truly distinctive, alto saxophone sound to each musical situation. As a bandleader for the last two decades, he has also continually grown as a composer. With his latest recording (and second for Mack Avenue Records), Seeds From The Underground, Garrett has given notice that these qualities have not only become more impressive, but have provided him with the platform to expand his horizons and communicate his musical vision clearly. Seeds From The Underground is a powerful return to the straight-ahead, acoustic and propulsive quartet format that showcases Garrett's extraordinary abilities. Based on Arnold Lobel's well-loved books, and featuring a hummable score by Robert and Willie Reale, this whimsical show follows two great friends – the cheerful, popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad – through four fun-filled seasons. Waking from hibernation in the Spring, Frog and Toad plant gardens, swim, rake leaves, go sledding and learn life lessons along the way. The two best friends celebrate and rejoice in the differences that make them unique and special. Part vaudeville, part make believe… all charm, A Year with Frog and Toad tells the story of a friendship that endures throughout the seasons. The jazzy, upbeat score of A Year with Frog and Toad bubbles with melody and wit, making it an inventive, exuberant and enchanting musical for the whole family. It is a perfect show to be performed by an ensemble group of actors and can be produced with either simple or extravagant staging and sets.

George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic - Blue Note
June 04, 2019 - New York

Recording both as Parliament and Funkadelic, George Clinton revolutionized R&B during the '70s, twisting soul music into funk by adding influences from several late-'60s acid heroes: Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Sly Stone. The Parliament/Funkadelicmachine ruled black music during the '70s, capturing over 40 R&B hit singles (including three number ones) and recording three platinum albums. Born in Kannapolis, NC, on July 22, 1941, Clinton became interested in doo wop while living in New Jersey during the early '50s. . Basing his group on Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, Clinton formed The Parliaments in 1955, rehearsing in the back room of a Plainfield barbershop where he straightened hair. The Parliaments released only two singles during the next ten years, but frequent trips to Detroit during the mid-'60s – where Clinton began working as a songwriter and producer – eventually paid off their investment.

With pianist Kenny Werner, bassist Johannes Weidenmueller, and drummer Ari Hoenig. Kenny Werner is a world-class pianist and composer whose prolific output of compositions, recordings, and educational publications impact as many artists as they do audiences. Werner's compositional style makes most pieces more of a meditative journey than a concise tune, and the group members excel at creating varied, extended solos around the twists and turns of each song. Werner's book and method, Effortless Mastery, is considered a definitive teaching tool for improvisers to "liberate" their musicality and avoid falling back on familiar ideas, and this long-running trio puts these ideals into practice.

Elew - Zinc
June 04, 2019 - New York

Once upon a time, Eric Lewis was a decorated, up-and-coming jazz pianist, a sideman for Wynton Marsalis and Elvin Jones, among others, and the winner of the 1999 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition. A decade into his career, he had an epiphany. The songs he was playing weren't speaking to him the way he wanted them to: while they were part of the traditional jazz repertoire, they weren't part of his own emotional repertoire. On the other hand, there were contemporary rock songs whose lyrics meant the world to him. Lewis considered the landscape, drew the curtain, and reemerged as ELEW, a revolutionary artist who combines virtuosic skill on the grand piano with an unprecedented openness to modern pop and rock music.

David Ramirez Plays His Entire Catalog - 3 Nights! - Night 1: American Soil + Strangetown at The Loft - 6/7 - City Winery
June 07, 2019 - 2nd floor New York

We're Not Going Anywhere: At a historical moment of immense political, social, and ecological uncertainty, those four simple words comprise both a promise and a protest, a comforting reassurance of inclusion as well as a hearty cry of defiance. It's a statement that offers no small sense of hope, in that sense matching the music contained on the album. On these vividly imagined and passionately performed songs David Ramirez takes in the world from his unique perspective: "Being half white and half Mexican has made this current political climate especially interesting. So many cultures in this country are being viewed as un-American and it breaks my heart. My family have raised children here, created successful businesses here, and are proud to be a part of this country. Most of what I've seen as of late is misplaced fear. I wanted to write about that fear and how, instead of benefiting us, it sends us spiraling out control." The album that bears that title marks a departure for Ramirez, who builds on the rootsy sound of his early albums to create something new, something bold, something anchored in the here and now. Scouting out unexplored music territory, these songs bounce arou... (read more)

The Duke Ellington Orchestra - The Clayton Opera House
June 07, 2019 - Clayton

Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington born April 29, 1899 is regarded as one of the most prolific American composers of the Twentieth century. His career spanned more than 50 years and included leading his orchestra, composing an inexhaustible songbook, scoring for movies, composing stage musicals and world tours. Duke Ellington called his music "American Music" rather than jazz, and liked to describe those who impressed him as "beyond category." He remains one of the most influential figures in jazz, if not in all American music, and is widely considered as on of the Twentieth century's best know African American personalities. As both a composer and a band leader, Duke Ellington influenced millions of people both around the world and at home. He gave American music its own sound for the first time. In his fifty year career, he played over 20,000 performances in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East as well as Asia. Ellington led his band from 1923 until his death on May 4, 2974 at the age of 75. At this point, his son Mercer Ellington took leadership of the band. Mercer was an accomplished trumpet player and composer who wrote many songs for his father's orchestra including the stand... (read more)

Drummer/percussionist, Memo Acevedo is the recipient of numerous awards in the music industry as a performer, leader, educator, and author. The truth will set you free, but it always feels like it tears you apart, she sings. She's a throwback, but a gutsy one." Her latest studio album The Mystery of Me released December 2017 is a journey back to her Small White Town roots. Her new single, "She Too" is slated for an early 2019 release.

David Ramirez Plays His Entire Catalog - 3 Nights! - Night 3: FABLES + We're Not Going Anywhere at The Loft - The Loft at City Winery
Through June 09, 2019 - New York

I wanted to write about that fear and how, instead of benefiting us, it sends us spiraling out control."

"Lush vocals over chocolatey thick harmonies with a saxophone cooler than a penguin sippin' a slushie... sheesh, can you go wrong?"

Joey Alexander - Blue Note
Through June 09, 2019 - New York

Too often, talented young artists succumb to believing so much in their own ability that they lose sight of their true potential as significant contributors to their field. Thankfully, there are others committed to evolving and lifting the music to new levels of appreciation with enthusiasm, engagement, and emotional depth. Enter pianist Joey Alexander, who at the age of 14 has already recorded two GRAMMY-nominated studio albums, 2015's My Favorite Things and 2016's Countdown, as well as Joey.Monk.Live!, a critically acclaimed surprise release from late 2017 to honor Thelonious Monk's centennial. With his third studio effort Eclipse, his most personal statement to date, Joey takes another giant step forward, demonstrating his aptitude as a composer, bandleader, and musician, hinting at the many artistic paths open to him in the decades ahead. Eclipse, recorded over a three-day period beginning on the day of the solar eclipse of 2017, features the pianist with a stellar rhythm section of bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland, and guest appearances by saxophonist Joshua Redman on three tracks.
