Old School vs New School Brunch & Day Party - Mother's Day Edition - MIST Harlem
May 12, 2019 - New York

Remember when MTV actually played music videos instead of all those ratchet reality TV shows? At one time, music videos were a really BIG DEAL! C'mon… you know you used to race home after school to watch The Box ("Music Television You Control"), and Video Soul or Rap City on BET. If you were in NYC back then, you remember how we lived for Video Music Box with Ralph McDaniels and The Bobby Simmon's show. But no matter where you grew up, chances are that at some point you spent time watching music videos – imitating the dance moves, learning the lyrics, and copy the fashion trends… Man, those were the days! Well, The Alumni Group is taking you on a trip down memory lane at our Video Music Brunch.

Big Band B-3: Joey DeFrancesco with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra - Jazz at Lincoln Center
May 17, 2019 - New York

Joey DeFrancesco—arguably the greatest jazz organist alive—joins the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for the first time. With two 61-note keyboards, a 25-note bass pedal board controlled by foot, and multiple custom drawbars, the Hammond organ is practically a full band by itself. This expansive instrument is rarely paired with a big band, but it adds a rich new dimension when the musicians are up to the challenge. Tonight, DeFrancesco and the JLCO will explore two classic records that defied the organ's typical small group confines and left fans craving more. First up is Duke Ellington's New Orleans Suite, a lesser-known and delightfully varied repertoire of Ellington excellence. The original recording featured organ only on the gospel-tinged "Blues for New Orleans," but DeFrancesco and JLCO trombonist Vincent Gardner are excitedly cooking up new arrangements to expand its role. The second half of the show explores Oliver Nelson's unique take on Peter & The Wolf, a playful suite full of fiery solos by legendary organist Jimmy Smith. DeFrancesco is one of jazz's most entertaining and stunningly virtuosic musicians, and he has wanted to play this music with the JLCO for a ... (read more)

Michael Lee is a Fort Worth based Blues artist. Featured as a contestant for the 2018 Season of the Voice. Where his soul and energy was unmatched and unlike the show has ever seen. Raised around blues music his entire life, Michael spent the majority of his young life in blues clubs receiving an ivy league education from watching and playing with blues legends such as Andrew "Jr Boy" Jones (Freddie King), Buddy Whittington (John Mayall), Lucky Peterson (Willie Dixon). On nights he was not in the blues clubs he was down in the stockyards soaking in the Country sounds which emanated from those honky tonks. Like Delbert McClinton and many Fort Worth musicians before him, Michael's style of music has the perfect blend of Blues and Country. Michael Lee released his first record in 2014, released two singles in the summer of 2018 "Here I Am" and "Heart of Stone" and is releasing his sophomore record in 2019.

Admission may increase depending upon a given week's performance schedule. Superb Alto Saxophonist Christopher McBride has been slowly but steadily turning heads with his ubiquitous work as an invaluable sideman since the mid-aughts. Liszt vividly depicts episodes from Dante's Inferno and Purgatory, while Rossini paints a portrait of a mother's grief. The intense drama of Dante's verse comes to life in Liszt's spectacularly orchestrated descriptions of hell's terrors and ethereal women's choir intoning the Magnificat in the ascent to Purgatory. A masterpiece of 19th-century sacred music, Rossini's setting of the Stabat Mater, the Virgin Mary's lament at the cross of Jesus, moves with superb vocal writing, including the hair-raising "Inflammatus" for soprano and chorus, the tenor's showpiece "Cujus animam," and more.
