November 14, 2017 - New York

Marc Broussard is an artist with a unique gift of channeling the spirits of classic R&B, rock and soul into contemporary terms. This gift has been a matter of common knowledge since 2002, when Broussard released his debut album, Momentary Setback, which he recorded and released independently at age 20. It was no secret before then, going back to those lucky witnesses who heard him belt "Johnny B. Goode" onstage at age 5 while sitting in with his father's band. Throughout his life, Broussard has been tapped as a talent to watch. Marc's song "Home" was successful at radio and catapulted him onto the national touring stage. His music has been placed in many TV shows and movies. The timeless, soulful nature of Marc's vocal lends well to Film and TV, and will continue to do so for years to come. Most recently, Marc released an independent Christmas Album titled, "Magnolias & Mistletoe". The original song, "Almost Christmas" received radio play worldwide. Marc's next project is a charitable rhythm and blues covers record to be released summer 2016. He will be donating fifty percent of the proceeds to City of Refuge.

Carla Cook Quartet - Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church
November 14, 2017 - New York

Carla Cook is daring. She is a jazz singer/songwriter who sings standards beautifully - but she doesn't stop there. Cook is willing to put a jazz spin on songs not written by traditional jazz composers. Songs that, until you hear her sing them, you'd never imagine could be interpreted as jazz. This native Detroiter, who grew up in a musically rich and diverse environment, brings all her influences to bear within her repertoire. In her songbook you'll find elements of R and B, European classical, Motown, Blues and Gospel. Cook has always eschewed labels, and refuses to become a jazz purist or snob. That willingness to simply sing what she loves, bringing an earthy sophistication to every song, is what gives Cook her signature style. In 1999, Cook recorded her debut album, It's All About Love. The CD enjoyed favorable reviews and received a Grammy nomination in the Best Jazz Vocal Performance category and was awarded the AFIM Indie Award for Best Jazz Vocal in 2000. In 2000, Cook recorded her second album, Dem Bones and in 2002, she recorded Simply Natural, both for MAXJAZZ. Steve Sandberg Steve Sandberg is an eclectic musician with a lifetime of experience in many worlds of music. He is a three-time Emmy-nominated composer whose scoring, songwriting and musical direction for "Dora the Explorer", "Go, Diego, Go!" and "Dora and Friends" helped make these shows the landmarks they are in children's television worldwide. He began classical piano studies at age 4 and won a BMI composers award before attending Yale University, where he majored in musical theory and composition. At Yale, his studies with noted African art theorist Robert Farris Thompson inspired him to immerse himself in the world of Afro-Caribbean music. Upon returning to NYC he played with, arranged and composed for some of the great salsa artists of the 1970s and 1980s, including Celia Cruz, Ruben Blades, and Daniel Ponce (featuring Tito Puente). A highlight of this period was an appearance in Rio and São Paolo opening for the legendary João Gilberto in a duo with vocalist Bebel Gilberto. The Music of Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker and Whitney Houston - Club Bonafide
Through November 16, 2017 - New York

Feat. Emilie Surtees For a singer with such powerful pipes, it's something of a shock to hear vocalist Emilie Surtees describe herself as primarily a "listener." Then again, maybe it's her extraordinary capacity to listen that gives her tribute to Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker and Whitney Houston its amazing accuracy. Surtees not only replicates hit songs, power note for power note, but communicates the soul of each singer who originally recorded them — something that requires not only incredible vocals but also a profound appreciation of music. Be moved and amazed by a tribute artist every bit as talented as the singers she honors in this concert at Club Bonafide.

RBA Presents: Rebetiki Istoria: Rebetika Music of Greece - Roulette
November 18, 2017 - Brooklyn

Rebetiki Istoria ("rebetika history") is a leading traditional group from Athens specializing in early-style rebetika, one of the oldest genres of Greek urban popular song. Often called "the Greek blues," the music expresses the hardship and joys of everyday life and deals with such subjects as unrequited love, economic hardship, and repatriation. At times rebetika was censored and its musicians ostracized; at other times, it was lauded as the greatest expression of Greek music and culture. For 35 years, Rebetiki Istoria has been instrumental in the rebetiko revival, producing authentic and compelling rebetika songs reminiscent of the earliest stars. Its extensive repertoire includes popular songs from Markos Vamvakaris, Vassilis Tsitsanis and Ioannis Papaioannou, little-known gems, and traditional improvisational amanes. The ensemble features bouzouki, baglama, guitar and voice and is led by its founder, the renowned Pavlos Vassiliou.

An Evening w/ Robyn Hitchcock - City Winery
November 18, 2017 - New York

Described by its creator as "an ecstatic work of negativity," ROBYN HITCHCOCK instantly stands among the most energized and ambitious recordings of the iconic troubadour's long career. Hitchcock's 21st studio recording and first-ever eponymous release, the album sees him casting familiar shapes into surprising new forms, the sci-fi fueled sounds and visions that first stimulated his work now ribboned with experience and hard-earned wisdom. Spanning dystopic psychedelia ("Mad Shelley's Letterbox," "Time Coast"), inspired folk baroque ("Raymond and the Wires," "1970 In Aspic"), even rambunctious liver-fried country ("I Pray When I'm Drunk"), ROBYN HITCHCOCK marks both a masterful new chapter and ideal entry point into Hitchcock's wildly brilliant oeuvre. "It's 'Introducing Robyn Hitchcock,'" he says. "Think of me as a new act – I'm only 63. People always ask me, where should I start listening to your records? I'm a train with many carriages. I thought, I'll just make this record and if people like this one, then they'll probably like the others. If they don't, it's not worth them listening to any of them, really. "

Stanley Clarke Band - Blue Note
Through November 19, 2017 - New York

Bassist Stanley Clarke was barely out of his teens when he exploded into the jazz world in 1971. Fresh out of the Philadelphia Academy of Music, he arrived in New York City and immediately landed jobs with famous bandleaders such as Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Pharaoh Saunders, Gil Evans, Stan Getz and a budding young pianist-composer named Chick Corea. All of these musicians immediately recognized Clarke's ferocious dexterity and complete musicality on the acoustic bass. Not only was he an expert at crafting bass lines and functioning as a timekeeper – in keeping with his instrument's traditional role – but the young prodigy also possessed a sense of lyricism and melody distilled from his bass heroes Charles Mingus, Scott LaFaro and others, as well as non-bass players like John Coltrane. Clarke envisioned the bass as a viable, melodic solo instrument positioned at the front of the stage rather than in a background role, and he was uniquely qualified to take it there. The vision became a reality when Clarke and Corea formed the seminal electric jazz/fusion band Return To Forever. RTF was a showcase for each of the quartet's strong musical p... (read more)

Marcus Strickland's Twi-Life & Friends - Monthly Fall Residency - Blue Note
Through November 20, 2017 - New York

"It all started as a hobby", Marcus Strickland says of his beat making. "It was what I did after playing sets with Roy Haynes or Jeff 'Tain' Watts" or on a break between practicing saxophone etudes. It started separately, and naturally became one with my voice as a composer and saxophonist." Marcus Strickland's debut Blue Note/ Revive Records release Nihil Novi (Latin for Nothing New) is about our relationship with time: how many things in the world can seem new, but are actually cyclical occurrences or developments from where the past left us off. From 2 Live Crew to Twerking, and Rodney King to Eric Garner, be careful what you call new. The multi reedist/ beatmaker made this record with a strong and inspiring urgency that is inclusive of, yet not exclusively from his jazz roots. "A musician does not grow from forcing themselves into a vacuum. Genres eventually cross pollinate, making our ability to be in the present more relevant than the original given terms. Creativity does not stay within lanes, it feeds off of its surroundings." However, Strickland has a deep rooted respect and admiration for his predecessors, and it shows in his music. "One great tool that we ha... (read more)

Mccoy Tyner - Blue Note

Jazz pianist McCoy Tyner is widely considered one of the finest and most influential pianists in jazz history. His signature booming left-hand and fleeting right created a unique sound that can be heard on his recordings as a sideman with the John Coltrane Quartet in the 1960s and on his 80-plus albums as a leader. Tyner's most recent project for McCoy Tyner Music/Half Note Records is his first solo effort in almost a decade titled Solo: Live From San Francisco. The release is the third for his label and features eleven solo vignettes recorded at the Herbst Theater in 2007. Tyner's blues based piano style, replete with sophisticated chords and an explosively percussive left hand has transcended conventional styles to become one of the most identifiable sounds in improvised music. His harmonic contributions and dramatic rhythmic devices form the vocabulary of a majority of jazz pianists. Born in 1938 in Philadelphia, he became a part of the fertile jazz and R&B scene of the early '50s. His parents imbued him with a love for music from an early age.
