Known as one of the finest pianists of the past 50 years, Eddie Palmieri is a bandleader, arranger and composer of salsa and Latin jazz. His playing skillfully fuses the rhythm of his Puerto Rican heritage with the complexity of his jazz influences: Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, and McCoy Tyner, as well as his older brother Charlie Palmieri. Palmieri's parents emigrated from Ponce, Puerto Rico to New York City in 1926. Born in Spanish Harlem and raised in the Bronx, Palmieri learned to play the piano at an early age, and at 13, he joined his uncle's orchestra, playing timbales. Palmieri's professional career as a pianist took off with various bands in the early 1950s, including Eddie Forrester's, Johnny Segui's, and the popular Tito Rodriguez Orchestra. In 1961, Palmieri formed his own band, La Perfecta, which featured an unconventional front line of trombones rather than the trumpets customary in Latin orchestras. This created an innovative sound that mixed American jazz into Afro-Caribbean rhythms, surprising critics and fans alike. Billy Bragg (Early Show) - City Winery
October 16, 2017 - New York

Fresh from touring the world with Joe Henry and galvanized by 'events', not least the worrying rise of popularism, Billy Bragg is dealing with it in the best way he knows how, by strapping on his electric guitar and heading out on tour across the US in October, under the title 'Bridges Not Walls'. Billy, in one-man Clash mode, will perform songs from his 30+ year career, some pertinent covers by his heroes and mentors and some freshly minted songs about the state of the world. Billy Bragg has been a fearless recording artist, tireless live performer and peerless political campaigner for over 30 years. Among the former Saturday boy's albums are his punk-charged debut Life's a Riot With Spy Vs Spy, the more love-infused Workers Playtime, pop classic Don't Try This At Home, the Queen's Golden Jubilee-timed treatise on national identity England, Half-English, and his stripped-down tenth, Tooth & Nail, his most successful since the early 90s. The intervening three decades have been marked by a number one hit single, having a street named after him, being the subject of a South Bank Show, appearing onstage at Wembley Stadium, curating Left Field at Glastonbury, sharing spotted dick w... Stanley Jordan - Album Release Celebration - Blue Note
October 16, 2017 - New York

In a career that took flight in 1985 with commercial and critical acclaim, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has consistently displayed a chameleonic musical persona of openness, imagination, versatility and maverick daring. Be it bold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits, to blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works—solo or with a group—Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on breathless journeys into the unexpected. His mastery of a special technique on the guitar's fretboard was key to Jordan's fast-track acclaim. Instead of conventional strumming and picking, Jordan's innovative "touch technique" is an advanced form of two-handed tapping. While a handful of other players were using similar techniques, Stanley's fluid, multi-layered textures and sheer virtuosity raised the bar for excellence. But his technique, though impressive, is always a means to a musical end. His music is imbued with a warmth and sensitivity that has captured the imagination of listeners worldwide. A classically trained pianist before playing guitar, Jordan wanted greater freedom in voicing chords on his guitar... (read more)

It made every other band that came after, followers." – Chico O'Farrill Cuban born trumpeter, clarinetist, alto saxophonist, Mario Bauzá had been a child prodigy becoming a member of the Havana Philharmonic as a teenager and a featured clarinetist with pianist Antonio Maria Romeu's Charanga Orchestra. His arrival to NYC in 1926 at the age of 15 with Romeu changed his life as he was inspired by two things – Harlem, and the Paul Whitman Orchestra performing Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue. His return in 1930 led to him becoming drummer Chick Webb's lead trumpeter and musical director eventually working with Cab Calloway where he mentored Dizzy Gillespie. Mario's dream? To form an orchestra that would fuse authentic Afro-Cuban rhythms with the elegance, power, and harmonic sophistication of a jazz big band. Boney James @ B.B. King's - Blue Note
October 20, 2017 - New York

Four-time GRAMMY nominee and multi-platinum selling sax-man Boney James continues his artistic evolution with the dynamic futuresoul. Fusing his love for vintage soul music with his mastery of modern production, Boney has created another genre-bending work following on the heels of his 2014 GRAMMY-nominated album The Beat. "The forms I'm working with are rooted in my early influences," says James, dropping names like King Curtis, the Stylistics and Earth, Wind & Fire. "But recently I've been listening to contemporary artists like Tinashe, Sam Smith and Ellie Goulding, and I'm inspired by the sound of their recordings. The production is so cool and evocative. As I started the new record, I was in my backyard studio messing around with this "gearhead" stuff I've collected. Ideas started flowing and it sounded like modern soul music to me. I thought to myself, `What is this?'... And then it hit me: `futuresoul.'" Born in Lowell, Mass. and raised in New Rochelle, NY, Boney became seriously interested in music in the mid `70s, a very vibrant and freewheeling period for popular music. "You could hear different genres all over the radio. Contemporary jazz was everywhere - peo... (read more)

Noah Gundersen - Music Hall of Williamsburg
October 20, 2017 - Brooklyn

WHITE NOISE In America today, anyone can engage in spiritual surrender. Performing the rite is simple: one first gathers with their community in a room of mirrors (in peripheral vision these mirrors appear as windows). Next, the agendas, hopes, and grievances of each individual are written down and cast along pulsed radio frequencies to data centers. From here they are automatically sifted through a neural network of graphics processing units, and contributed to an artificial intelligence engine. The principal aim of the ritual is to preserve the cosmic movement of collective perception. Secondary aims include catharsis, prosperity, and (occasionally) procreation. Because of the persistence of social stresses and mounting political dread, the ritual's cyclic performance is necessary (twice daily, once at dusk and once at dawn).

Marcus Strickland's Twi-Life & Friends - Monthly Fall Residency - Blue Note
Through November 20, 2017 - New York

"It all started as a hobby", Marcus Strickland says of his beat making. "It was what I did after playing sets with Roy Haynes or Jeff 'Tain' Watts" or on a break between practicing saxophone etudes. It started separately, and naturally became one with my voice as a composer and saxophonist." Marcus Strickland's debut Blue Note/ Revive Records release Nihil Novi (Latin for Nothing New) is about our relationship with time: how many things in the world can seem new, but are actually cyclical occurrences or developments from where the past left us off. From 2 Live Crew to Twerking, and Rodney King to Eric Garner, be careful what you call new. The multi reedist/ beatmaker made this record with a strong and inspiring urgency that is inclusive of, yet not exclusively from his jazz roots. "A musician does not grow from forcing themselves into a vacuum. Genres eventually cross pollinate, making our ability to be in the present more relevant than the original given terms. Creativity does not stay within lanes, it feeds off of its surroundings." However, Strickland has a deep rooted respect and admiration for his predecessors, and it shows in his music. "One great tool that we ha... (read more)

Mccoy Tyner - Blue Note
Through November 27, 2017 - New York

Jazz pianist McCoy Tyner is widely considered one of the finest and most influential pianists in jazz history. His signature booming left-hand and fleeting right created a unique sound that can be heard on his recordings as a sideman with the John Coltrane Quartet in the 1960s and on his 80-plus albums as a leader. Tyner's most recent project for McCoy Tyner Music/Half Note Records is his first solo effort in almost a decade titled Solo: Live From San Francisco. The release is the third for his label and features eleven solo vignettes recorded at the Herbst Theater in 2007. Tyner's blues based piano style, replete with sophisticated chords and an explosively percussive left hand has transcended conventional styles to become one of the most identifiable sounds in improvised music. His harmonic contributions and dramatic rhythmic devices form the vocabulary of a majority of jazz pianists. Born in 1938 in Philadelphia, he became a part of the fertile jazz and R&B scene of the early '50s. His parents imbued him with a love for music from an early age. His mother encouraged him to explore his musical interests through formal training. At 17 he began a career-changing relationshi... (read more)

Julian Fleisher - Joe's Pub at the Public at Theater
Through December 12, 2017 - New York

Before the art of song was divided into narrow stylistic slices, before there was Jazz or Pop or Rock, there was Nightclub Singing. "I have seen the future of vocal Jazz! He's got a marvelous, resonate baritone, with impeccable intonation, and a wonderful choice of material...talented, funny and hip."- LA Jazz Scene, East/ West Connections

David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band - Birdland
Through December 25, 2017 - New York

nspired by the noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues, David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band breathes life and passion into America's own great art form. Legendary record producer George Avakian describes the band in this way: "There has never been a band quite like this one. Most groups, past and present, stick to one style. Some current groups attempt to recreate early recordings in their entirety. These guys do neither. Inspired by divergent bands of the 1920s and 30s, you'll hear them swing a variety of styles in music by a wide range of composers, always true to the joy and heart of the music." Now in its 17th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city's best musical bargain! Tuba player David Ostwald leads a rotating lineup that features talents such as clarinetist Anat Cohen, trombonist/vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ehud Asherie, drummer Marion Felder and more!
