Kermit Ruffins & the Bbq Swingers - Blue Note
Through September 10, 0201 - New York

Whether listening to a track on his newest CD, engaging him in conversation or hearing his voice on an answering machine message, one word springs immediately to mind to describe Kermit Ruffins. Passion. The 44-year-old New Orleans native lives it, plays it and sings about it, and nowhere is it more evident than when he discusses his craft the swinging, good-time jazz that lured him in as a teenager and continues to whet his appetite even three decades and 10 solo recordings later. "You definitely pick that up from me. Thats definitely the way I live, man," he said. "From the time I wake up in the morning, I'm itching for my next show to happen. It can't get here fast enough for me. I think thats the basic ingredient of New Orleans music. Our traditional music. Its really just happy music. A lot of other jazz players are very technical and concentrating on studying hard. We study hard, too, but what we most want to do is just get up there and experiment with the tunes that weve been playing for years and years." At this point in his career, in fact, having fun at work is a prerequisite. The mandate for fun in performing traces back to a musical role model ... (read more)

Jacob Varmus Quartet - Jazz - Silvana
September 08, 2017 - New York

Jacob Varmus left his hometown, San Francisco, in 1991 to go to the University of Iowa. Like many before him, he had high hopes of coming of age as a poet while cruising the vast American heartland. He saw language and experience as the tools to probe the deepest layers of the human psyche. In his first year he was admitted to the undergraduate writers' workshop where he studied with Jorie Graham. As he produced poems unremittingly and charted the labyrinthine maze of academic life as an English major, he also played trumpet devotedly, getting a good classical foundation with David Greenhoe. Although not set on a career in music he was nonetheless engrossed in the music of the great jazz trumpeters, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis, to name a few. Chet Baker and Woody Shaw were also early favorites and of special import to his trumpet sound then and now.

Lee Konitz 90th Birthday Celebration - Blue Note
September 09, 2017 - New York

Lee Konitz 90th Birthday Celebration Alto Saxophonist Lee Konitz has enjoyed one of the most creative and prolific careers in modern jazz. After an early experience with the Claude Thornhill Orchestra and Stan Kenton's Orchestra, the innovative small groups of pianist Lennie Tristano, and the Miles Davis Capitol Orchestra ("Birth of the Cool"), Konitz turned freelance and has remained on the cutting edge of post-bop improvisation ever since. He has occasionally led a nonet (now resurrected!) and various quartets, but his exceptionally large and varied discography also includes an early unaccompanied saxophone solo album, several innovative albums of duets that spanned jazz styles, and collaborations which reads like the "who's who" of the Jazz world. Lee Konitz is the only still active musician to have played all three ever excisting Birdland clubs in New York City. Like Gil Evans or Coleman Hawkins Lee has always been open and interested to play with younger musicans and to participate in exciting new musical projects co-lead by them (like the Lee Konitz New Nonet or the Lee Konitz-Ohad Talmor String Project). A new book about Lee Konitz (by Andy Hamilton) wa... (read more)

Kevin Harris Project - Blue Note
September 10, 2017 - New York

When the unmistakable musical influences of Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker intersect with J.S. Bach, Scott Joplin, and the folkloric rhythms of Cuba, could one possibly conceptualize the celebration that occurs at that intersection? New York-based jazz pianist Kevin Harris plays a distinctive combination of traditional and contemporary music that seeks to explore such a crossroad. Fred Hersch talks of Harris as one who "plays and writes with flair and real soul" and Downbeat Magazine writes that "Harris' compositions deal with themes of strength, love, courage, and self- awareness. It's a heavy task he's set up for himself, and he meets the challenge gracefully." One of the captivating elements of the Kevin Harris Project is the level of comfort and understanding they have with one another as they dive into soulfully expressive conversations and playful exchanges of ideas. Both live and recorded performances reflect Harris's determination to capture his audience through explorative interactions that Terri Lyne Carrington describes as "an exciting commitment to quality". Among his most notable collaborations are Greg Osby, Bill Pierce, Francisco Mela, Avisha... (read more)

Band Of Other Brothers - Iridium
Through September 10, 2017 - New York

Jeff Babko, Nir Felder, Jeff Coffin, Will Lee, Keith Carlock Jeff Coffin, saxophonist of the Dave Matthews Band and his own Mu'Tet, and fellow Jeff Babko, keyboardist for James Taylor, Mark Guiliana's LA Beat Music and nightly on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live, had made a trio record with super drummer Vinnie Colaiuta back in 2005 called Mondo Trio (AbstractLogix). This "musicians' favorite" begged for a follow up recording, but this time Babko wanted to try something different. The relocation of Steely Dan drummer Keith Carlock to Nashville, Coffin's hometown, triggered the idea of doing a project there. However, this time Babko wanted to expand the band "to take the edge of my left hand bass duties", he says. Inspired by reading guitarist Pat Martino's biography, Babko looked back to Martino's 1976 Starbright album for inspiration. That record's bassist, Will Lee (Late Show w/ David Letterman, The Fab Faux, Brecker Brothers) seemed like a perfect fit for this new unexplored project. With the inspiration of Martino as a backdrop, Babko thought it now was important to bring in a guitarist. The remarkable Nir Felder, which NPR called "the next big jazz guitarist"... (read more)

Peggy Lee Septet: Tell Tale - Roulette
September 13, 2017 - Brooklyn

Tell Tale was a project conceived in 2009 as a musical response to writer / creator David Milch's HBO series, Deadwood. Forming an ensemble of improvisers from Vancouver's deep and varied creative music community, Peggy Lee likened the players to characters in a story and wanted to give them each a chance to voice their individual ideas in unaccompanied solos and in small ensembles within the framework of a musical suite. The seven composed sections of the music imply the arc of a story but they are also intended as launching pads for the players to then make extended improvised statements that take the listener on a journey that is never the same twice.

Tim Berne's Snakeoil - Blue Smoke & Jazz Standard
September 13, 2017 - New York

In forming the angular and expansive quartet he calls Snakeoil, Tim Berne "decided on this very transparent instrumentation to try and avoid obvious stylistic references and to focus the listener on the musical ideas being presented…When I had these three players who were both original improvisers and great readers, it was really a motivation to write a lot of new material." After compelling contributions to ECM discs by David Torn and Michael Formanek, Tim Berne made his ECM debut in 2011 with Snakeoil. This recording introduced a "chamber–like group" (in Berne's words) that packs some impressive firepower, with Berne's alto teamed with Oscar Noriega's earthy clarinets, Matt Mitchell's cryptic piano, and Ches Smith's tone–conscious drums, tympani, gongs and congas. Tim comes to Jazz Standard to celebrate the band's highly anticipated third ECM release You've Been Watching Me, which augments the band with guitarist Ryan Ferriera.

The Kennedy Administration - Club Groove NYC
September 13, 2017 - New York

Some lead vocalists are so captivating, you wonder who's more dazzled when they sing: the adoring fans, or the bandmates who count themselves as blessed as the crowd to be in the presence of such an engaging talent. Watch any live performance by theKennedy Administration, with this quartet's singular namesake at the microphone, and you'll see right away that the rapt audience for Kennedy includes the very skilled, well-traveled players on stage. Kennedy's joy is contagious. It's a testament to her abilities as a musician, and her irresistible presence, that Ondrej Pivec on keyboards, Dmitry Gorodetsky on bass and Nathaniel Townsley on drums were drawn to her and motivated to also help bring the original compositions of this emerging young singer-songwriter to life. Mind you, these guys do not impress easily. Kennedy's cabinet of three has more high-level, executive experience in jazz, r&b, hip-hop and pop than you'll encounter in bands boasting double the number of personnel or claiming twice as many years in music. With credits ranging from Stevie Wonder to Lauryn Hill, and a roster of acclaimed "musician's musicians" in between, the Kennedy Administration's instrumental trio has s... (read more)

Melissa Aldana - Birdland
Through September 13, 2017 - New York

Acclaimed tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana follows up her 2014 Concord release Melissa Aldana & Crash Trio with the explorative and deeply swinging "Back Home," this time released on the Wommusic label. Bassist Pablo Menares is a fellow native of Santiago, Chile, and drummer Jochen Rueckert brings a supple and unpredictable rhythmic élan to the session. These three musicians turn on a dime and project an uncommonly full orchestral sound, rich in spiritual intensity, all in the absence of a harmony instrument. Still in her 20's, Melissa Aldana, has had a remarkably rapid evolution from a 6-year-old sax player to "bold new talent" (NPR), widely considered one of the most compelling and prodigious tenor saxophonists of her time. As a child Aldana studied with her renowned saxophonist father Marcos Aldana. In 2007 she moved to Boston to enroll at Berklee, coming under the mentorship of George Garzone. In 2013 she became the first female instrumentalist and the first South American ever to win the Thelonious Monk Competition. She is also a recipient of the Martin E. Segal Award from Jazz at Lincoln Center and a double recipient of the Altazor Award, Chile's highly prestigious nationa... (read more)

Loveless Texas - Sheen Center
Through September 24, 2017 - New York

Loveless Texas is a musical set in Texas oil country during the Great Depression. With echoes of Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost it tells the story of two brothers who take very different paths after the untimely death of their parents in an oil rig explosion: King Navarre, the older brother, leaves college to raise his brother and bury himself in the day-to-day operations of the family oil and cattle business, while the younger Berowne escapes to the life of a partying Jazz-age playboy. The hard times and a difficult bargain bring them into conflict, in the course of whose resolution the men learn to make peace with themselves and each other, find the loves of their lives when they least expect it, and discover the importance of making an emotional "home" in the world. Loveless Texas is a traditional book musical, with a score in a variety of traditional Americana styles, encompassing Texas swing, bluegrass, blues, Cajun waltz and two-step, and cowboy yodels. It is a fun, joyous, affirmative celebration of the power of love and the human spirit to prevail over hardship. Boomerang Theatre Company is an award-winning theatrical organization. Chicago - the Musical - New York City Theatre
Through September 30, 2017 - New York

An intoxicating mix of murder, sex and razzle dazzle, Chicago is Broadway at its most iconic. A winking satire of celebrity culture, it's the tale of two beautiful criminals in the Roaring Twenties who plan to get away with murder by putting on one hell of a show. Known for its slinky Bob Fosse choreography, lacey costumes and finger-clicking score, Chicago will show you a good time. Debuting on Broadway in 1975, Chicago was initially overshadowed by the year's other big musical, A Chorus Line, but is now firmly established as one of the Great White Way's most instantly recognisable shows. It's Broadway's longest-running ever American musical, and was turned into an Oscar winning movie in 2002, starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere.

Mccoy Tyner - Blue Note
Through November 27, 2017 - New York

Jazz pianist McCoy Tyner is widely considered one of the finest and most influential pianists in jazz history. His signature booming left-hand and fleeting right created a unique sound that can be heard on his recordings as a sideman with the John Coltrane Quartet in the 1960s and on his 80-plus albums as a leader. Tyner's most recent project for McCoy Tyner Music/Half Note Records is his first solo effort in almost a decade titled Solo: Live From San Francisco. The release is the third for his label and features eleven solo vignettes recorded at the Herbst Theater in 2007. Tyner's blues based piano style, replete with sophisticated chords and an explosively percussive left hand has transcended conventional styles to become one of the most identifiable sounds in improvised music. His harmonic contributions and dramatic rhythmic devices form the vocabulary of a majority of jazz pianists. Born in 1938 in Philadelphia, he became a part of the fertile jazz and R&B scene of the early '50s. His parents imbued him with a love for music from an early age. His mother encouraged him to explore his musical interests through formal training. At 17 he began a career-changing relationshi... (read more)
