Jon Stickley Trio w/ Front Country at The Loft - 4/26 - City Winery
April 26, 2019 - 2nd floor New York

Jon Stickley Trio is a genre-defying and cinematic instrumental trio, who's deep grooves, innovative flatpicking, and sultry-spacy violin moves the listener's head, heart, and feet. "It's not your father's acoustic-guitar music—Instead, Stickley's Martin churns out a mixture of bluegrass, Chuck Berry, metal, prog, grunge, and assorted other genres—all thoroughly integrated into a personal style," writes Guitar Player Magazine. Front Country An acoustic band born in the land of tech innovation, Front Country was never going to be accepted as an authentic American roots band out of the gate. Cutting their teeth in progressive bluegrass jams in San Francisco's Mission District and rehearsing in the East Bay, they learned to play roots music their own way, with the tools they had on hand. A mandolinist with a degree in composition and classical guitar. A guitarist trained in rock and world music. A bassist equally versed in jazz and bluegrass. A violinist with technique that could seamlessly hop between honky tonk and electropop. A female lead singer with grit and soul that was also a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. In a wood-paneled country dive bar in the shadow of the San Fr... (read more)

April 26, 2019 - New York

Eddie Henderson is one of today's top and most original jazz trumpet players." —All About Jazz Acclaimed trumpeter Eddie Henderson brings his formidable quartet to Zinc on Friday, April 26. He's supported by pianist Peter Zak, bassist Essiet Essiet and drummer Mike Clark. Eddie Henderson's wildly diverse and accomplished career began in a most appropriately lofty way: His first trumpet lessons as a young boy were given by Louis Armstrong. It was a connection made through the musical careers of Henderson's parents; his father a singer with the Charioteers and his mother a dancer at the Cotton Club. A native of New York City, Henderson relocated with his family to San Francisco by the age of 14. He studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music from 1954 to 1956 and drew the praise of Miles Davis, a friend of the Henderson family who came to know Eddie while visiting his parents during tour stops in town. After serving in the Air Force from 1958 to 1961, Henderson became the first African American to compete for a national figure skating championship, winning the Pacific and Midwestern titles. Soon after, he began to pursue dual careers in medicine and music, earning a Bachel... (read more)

Gatsby in Paris French Chansons & Jazz Standards from the 20s to the 40s Feat.Chloé Perrier & French Heart Jazz Band - Club Bonafide
April 26, 2019 - New York

Gatsby in Paris: French Chansons & Jazz Standards From the '20s to the '40s, featuring enchanting French singer Chloé Perrier and her new band, the French Heart Jazz Band. This irrepressibly charming show is a mix of French chansons and American jazz standards from the '20s to the '40s with a continental flare. Chloé sings an intriguing mix of jazz, chanson, Brazilian and occasionally Romany-tinged numbers in French, as well as in English. The group is known for its reinvention of the old chestnut "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" as a bolero-tinged Twin Peaks theme, an obscure '20s hot jazz tune that Perrier had found in a history book, and the classic "La Vie en Rose." Come to Club Bonafide in New York City and listen as exes get dissed and relationships gone wrong are dissected and remembered through glasses that aren't exactly rose-colored.

The Hot Sardines - Joe's Pub
April 26, 2019 - New York

In the talented hands of the New York-based ensemble, music first made famous decades ago comes alive through their brassy horn arrangements, rollicking piano melodies, and vocals from a chanteuse who transports listeners to a different era with the mere lilt of her voice. On French Fries & Champagne, The Hot Sardines' new album for Universal Music Classics, the jazz collective broadens its already impressive palette, combining covers and originals as they effortlessly channel New York speakeasies, Parisian cabarets and New Orleans jazz halls. Bandleader Evan "Bibs" Palazzo and lead singer "Miz Elizabeth" Bougerol met in 2007 after they both answered a Craigslist ad about a jazz jam session above a Manhattan noodle shop. The unlikely pair— she was a London School of Economics-educated travel writer who grew up in France, Canada and the Ivory Coast, he was a New York City born and raised actor who studied theater at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia—bonded over their love for Fats Waller. Influenced also by such greats as Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday, they began playing open mic nights and small gigs and by 2011, they headlined Midsummer Night Swin... A few days into the new year, on January 4, Stefon Harris & Blackout rolled into Jazz Standard and blew us away with the creativity and cohesion of their interplay. Now the acclaimed vibraphonist and his quintet are back for this multi–night stand. When DownBeat's John Murph attended the group's Kennedy Center in D.C. in 2018, he heard "an exploratory, tightly focused set that placed high stakes on rhythmic agility, communicative alertness and spontaneous invention…Each member admirably held their own next to Harris, whose virtuosic and imaginative improvisations can certainly prove unnerving for lesser talents." In 2018, Sonic Creed(Motema Music) was the first new release from Stefon Harris' Blackout since 2009's GRAMMY–nominated Urbanus. Family, community, legacy: "These core assets of the Black community are the messages of Sonic Creed," says Stefon Harris, "and we honor our legacy by exploring the music of masters such as Bobby Hutcherson, Abbey Lincoln, Wayne Shorter and Horace Silver. Dopapod - The Capitol Theatre
April 27, 2019 - Port Chester

Symmetry defines Dopapod. The band and each of its seven albums sports a palindromic name, meaning it can be read the same forward as backward. More than that, balance has become the band's modus operandi, with the group consciously juggling the darker tones of heavy rock with lighthearted humor; synthesizing tastes of funk, jazz, bluegrass, electronica, and more within their complex improvisational compositions. During live shows, Dopapod is known for taking fans on a full-out journey, guiding attendees through periods of frenzied dance contrasted with moments of thoughtful contemplation. Since forming at Berklee College Of Music in 2007, Dopapod—composed of Eli Winderman (keys and vocals), Rob Compa (guitar and vocals), Chuck Jones (bass), and Neal "Fro" Evans (drums)—has racked up an enviable list of accomplishments: a flourishing fanbase across the country, yearly show counts tallying into the hundreds, and high-profile appearances at festivals like Bonnaroo, Electric Forest, Summer Camp, High Sierra, and more. Most recently, in fall of 2017, the group released Megagem, the band's fifth studio album, which Glide Magazine called "simultaneously their most focused and thematical... (read more)

The group made their recording debut with their self-titled album in 1975. Known primarily as an East Coast cult act, they expanded their following by starring in their own 1975 CBS-TV variety series as a summer replacement for the Cher Bono Show. Starting as an underground group in New York City, The Manhattan Transfer garnered international popularity when "Chanson D'Amour" from the 1976 Coming Out album became a number one hit in Europe. One of the co-writers on The Junction – the group's new album which draws inspiration in part from The Transfer's classic 1975 version of Glenn Miller's "Tuxedo Junction" — is the group's new member, bass vocalist Trist Curless....
