Inspired by the electrifying open samba school rehearsals that precede Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro, the "Samba Party" is a communal gathering where Brazilian music enthusiasts share their love of samba drumming, dance, and culture in NYC. This Summertime edition of the event will feature an official dance contest to select Samba New York's 2019 "King of the Drums" — O Rei da Bateria. The Party will also include a samba lesson with our MC, Brazilian dance master, Danielle Lima, and a set of live batucada by the Samba New York! Drum Section, under the leadership of Dr. Samba.

The DeJohnette–Coltrane–Garrison Trio is a multi-generational jazz supergroup. DeJohnette is a highly influential jazz drummer inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2007; Ravi Coltrane – post-bop jazz saxophonist – is the son of jazz pianist Alice Coltrane and saxophonist John Coltrane, who played with DeJohnette; Matthew Garrison is DeJohnette's godson, and an accomplished bassist in his own right, described by the New York Times as "an electric bass virtuoso." Fifty years ago DeJohnette played with Coltrane Garrison's fathers in John Coltrane's group; on the 2016 album In Movement, he plays Coltrane's haunting elegy "Alabama" with their sons. Harpist Brandee Younger, a modern harpist, under the influence of Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane herself will open the show.

Anwar "Notes" Overton fell in love with the sounds of Jethro Hull, Herbie Mann, and Greg Patillo; whom he had the pleasure of meeting. Greg Patillo took a personal interest in "NOTES" and shared with him that it was possible to Bee Bop on the flute and deliver a smooth, peaceful sound at the same time! By the time he reached Intermediate School, he was a member of Meyer Levin's School Concert Band. Playing the flute during Middle School and High School was therapy for "NOTES." It was his way to escape the rough streets of Brooklyn, yet create a positive synergy with fellow students his age and older. "NOTES" later graduated from USF (University of South Florida) where he played in the Marching Band. As a professional artist, he has had the pleasure of gracing the stage with various musicians and bands; playing weddings, indoor and outdoor festivals, recording, as well as clubs and lounges about town.

This Tobin's Run celebrates their pioneering spirit, alongside songs from great vocal artists of the day, Abbey Lincoln and Sarah Vaughan. The evening will also feature film clips of musicians and Village clubs from the era.
