He made us believe in the music," says Wynton Marsalis. When he finally returned home as a local legend, he gave the world a gift that you will see on stage tonight. Barker had made it his mission to remind New Orleanians that jazz was their sacred birthright, and he founded a youth group that turned reluctant children into the jazz leaders we know today. An elite group of those musicians now reunites in The Appel Room for a soulful tribute to their mentor. Music director Dr. Michael White is a virtuoso on clarinet—an essential voice in New Orleans jazz. He'll be leading a band featuring master trombonist Lucien Barbarin, trumpet legend Gregg Stafford, drummer Shannon Powell (AKA the "King of Treme"), original Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra drummer Herlin Riley, and trumpeter Leroy Jones, who Wynton says "was the best of all of us." Guitarist and banjoist Don Vappie will play the role of "Mr. Barker," as the musicians still call him. The show also features pianist... (read more)

An Evening with Mindy Smith: A Solo Acoustic Tour Celebrating the 15th Anniversary of One Moment More through stories and song at The Loft - 6/1 - City Winery
June 01, 2019 - 2nd floor New York

"Her voice carves melodies so sharp and fine you can almost see them…" – New York Times "Smith's best songs sound like little miracles." – USA Today A good rule of thumb when going to a Mindy Smith concert, bring a hanky, a tissue or an extra sleeve. Your tear ducts don't know the difference between laughing tears and crying tears and you'll likely be doing both. "Humor is how I compensate for singing so many sad tunes back to back," says Smith. Mindy Smith is a Long Island-born, Nashville based singer-songwriter with a clear and honest passion for Americana, jazz, pop, rock, blues, and folk and is a self-proclaimed music genre mutt. She first created a buzz in the music world in 2003 charming fans with her rendition of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" for the tribute album 'Just Because I'm a Woman: Songs of Dolly Parton.' In 2004, Mindy solidified her place and won critical acclaim with her own debut album, 'One Moment More' which was re-issued on vinyl for the first time in 2019, to commemorate its 15th Anniversary. She has since released four additional full-length studio albums, a Christmas EP, and numerous singles. Her original songs have been recorded and released by the like... (read more)

It took more than two years for all of the pieces to come together for Remember Sports' forthcoming third album. In the time that has elapsed, Carmen Perry (vocals, guitar), Jack Washburn (guitar), and Catherine Dwyer (bass) have relocated from the tiny Midwestern college town of Gambier, Ohio, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, adding new drummer Connor Perry and retiring their original nom de plume, SPORTS, along the way. Slow Buzz, out May 18, 2018, on Father/Daughter Records, is the latest evolution of a band known for its dedication to friendship and ability to carve out revelatory scuzz fueled tunes that make you want to grab your closest buds and dance your cares away. Slow Buzz centers around a breakup and comes at a crossroads for the band. The record is the first official release under Remember Sports, a moniker that functions as both a question and a command, which foreshadows all of the deeply personal emotions Carmen experiences at the painful end of a good relationship. Carmen's writing is diaristic and intimate; hearing this record is a strange amalgam of both melancholy and joy. Brazen and energetic as ever, Slow Buzz is a record that is a paradox. It celebrates both ... (read more)

Kenny Garrett - Blue Note
Through June 02, 2019 - New York

Over the course of a stellar career that has spanned more than 30 years, saxophonist Kenny Garrett has become the preeminent alto saxophonist of his generation. From his first gig with the Duke Ellington Orchestra (led by Mercer Ellington) through his time spent with musicians such as Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis, Garrett has always brought a vigorous yet melodic, and truly distinctive, alto saxophone sound to each musical situation. As a bandleader for the last two decades, he has also continually grown as a composer. With his latest recording (and second for Mack Avenue Records), Seeds From The Underground, Garrett has given notice that these qualities have not only become more impressive, but have provided him with the platform to expand his horizons and communicate his musical vision clearly. Seeds From The Underground is a powerful return to the straight-ahead, acoustic and propulsive quartet format that showcases Garrett's extraordinary abilities.
