The Hot Sardines - SOPAC
October 13, 2017 - South Orange

The Hot Sardines breathe new life into music first made famous decades ago with brassy horn arrangements, rollicking piano melodies and vocals from a chanteuse who will transport you to a different era. On French Fries & Champagne, The Hot Sardines' new album, the Jazz collective broadens its already impressive palette, combining covers and originals as they effortlessly channel New York speakeasies, Parisian cabarets and New Orleans Jazz. Bandleader Evan "Bibs" Palazzo and lead singer "Miz Elizabeth" Bougerol met in 2007 after they both answered an ad about a jam session above a Manhattan noodle shop. They bonded over their love for Fats Waller, Dinah Washington, and Louie Armstrong…the rest is history. They began playing open mic nights and small gigs and by 2011, they headlined Midsummer Night Swing at New York's Lincoln Center. Downbeat calls the band "one of the most delightfully energetic bands on New York's 'hot' music scene," while The London Times praises their "crisp musicianship" and "immaculate and witty showmanship," declaring them "simply phenomenal."

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue - Terminal 5
October 13, 2017 - New York

Trombone Shorty's new album opens with a dirge, but if you think the beloved bandleader, singer, songwriter and horn-blower born Troy Andrews came here to mourn, you got it all wrong. That bit of beautiful New Orleans soul—"Laveau Dirge No. 1," named after one of the city's most famous voodoo queens—shows off our host's roots before Parking Lot Symphony branches out wildly, wonderfully, funkily across 12 diverse cuts. True to its title, this album contains multitudes of sound—from brass band blare and deep-groove funk, to bluesy beauty and hip-hop/pop swagger—and plenty of emotion all anchored, of course, by stellar playing and the idea that, even in the toughest of times, as Andrews says, "Music brings unity." As for why it's taken Andrews so long to follow 2013's Raphael Saadiq-produced Say That to Say This, the man simply says, "I didn't realize so much time passed. Some artists don't work until they put a record out but I never stopped going." Truly. In the last four years, Andrews banked his fifth White House gig; backed Macklemore and Madonna at the Grammys; played on albums by She & Him, Zac Brown, Dierks Bentley, and Mark Ronson; opened tours for Daryl Hall & John Oates ... New Sounds Live - Brookfield Place
Through October 13, 2017 - Battery Park City

This New Sounds Live series, curated by WNYC's John Schaefer, offers a captivating installation, the world premiere of The Phonemophonic Alphabet Brass Band by sculptor and multimedia artist, Carol Szymanski, in addition to an eclectic range of musical performances from artists, composers, and traditional musicians. Presented in totality for the first time, The Phonemophonic Alphabet Brass Band consists of 26 brass sculptures forming a three-dimensional font, which have also been crafted to function as musical instruments. Each horn sculpture (or "phonemophone," as Szymanski calls them) produces a unique range of tones generated by its particular letter shape. Since each horn represents a letter, they can "spell out" written texts by the order in which they are sounded—translating linguistic messages into musical terms. By the same token, they allow for something conceived of as a purely musical sequence to be thought of instead as a sequence of letters, perhaps a code. The result is an abstraction of language that opens a new genre, exploring sound, language, and visual elements in a striking new synthesis.

An Evening with Michael Franks @ B.B. King's - Blue Note
October 14, 2017 - New York

Michael Franks occupied a uniquely popular niche in the world of soft jazz and pop music in the 1970s; he was one of those crossover artists who defied easy category on the radio (which made him ideal for FM radio of the period), and found an audience mostly among college students. He was born in La Jolla, CA in 1944, the son of Gerald and Betty Franks. His parents weren't musicians, but they were music lovers and he was soon immersed in swing music and vocal jazz and pop. Franks' early idols included such jazz-cum-pop legends as Nat King Cole and Peggy Lee, as well as composers and lyricists such as Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Johnny Mercer. His first instrument was the guitar, and he got the only formal instruction of his life -- a total of six private lessons that came with his first instrument -- at age 14. He was drawn to poetry as a high school student, especially the work of Theodore Roethke,, and began singing and playing folk-rock during this period. Franks majored in English and then Comparative Literature at UCLA and also embraced the music of Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, among others. He never studied music... (read more)

Palmieri's parents emigrated from Ponce, Puerto Rico to New York City in 1926. Born in Spanish Harlem and raised in the Bronx, Palmieri learned to play the piano at an early age, and at 13, he joined his uncle's orchestra, playing timbales. Palmieri's professional career as a pianist took off with various bands in the early 1950s, including Eddie Forrester's, Johnny Segui's, and the popular Tito Rodriguez Orchestra. In 1961, Palmieri formed his own band, La Perfecta, which featured an unconventional front line of trombones rather than the trumpets customary in Latin orchestras. This created an innovative sound that mixed American jazz into Afro-Caribbean rhythms, surprising critics and fans alike. Palmieri disbanded La Perfecta in 1968 to pursue different musical endeavors, though he would return to the band's music in the 2000s. ... (read more)

Marcus Strickland's Twi-Life & Friends - Monthly Fall Residency - Blue Note
Through November 20, 2017 - New York

"It all started as a hobby", Marcus Strickland says of his beat making. "It was what I did after playing sets with Roy Haynes or Jeff 'Tain' Watts" or on a break between practicing saxophone etudes. It started separately, and naturally became one with my voice as a composer and saxophonist." Marcus Strickland's debut Blue Note/ Revive Records release Nihil Novi (Latin for Nothing New) is about our relationship with time: how many things in the world can seem new, but are actually cyclical occurrences or developments from where the past left us off. From 2 Live Crew to Twerking, and Rodney King to Eric Garner, be careful what you call new. The multi reedist/ beatmaker made this record with a strong and inspiring urgency that is inclusive of, yet not exclusively from his jazz roots. "A musician does not grow from forcing themselves into a vacuum. Genres eventually cross pollinate, making our ability to be in the present more relevant than the original given terms. Creativity does not stay within lanes, it feeds off of its surroundings." However, Strickland has a deep rooted respect and admiration for his predecessors, and it shows in his music. "One great tool that we ha... (read more)

Mccoy Tyner - Blue Note
Through November 27, 2017 - New York

Jazz pianist McCoy Tyner is widely considered one of the finest and most influential pianists in jazz history. His signature booming left-hand and fleeting right created a unique sound that can be heard on his recordings as a sideman with the John Coltrane Quartet in the 1960s and on his 80-plus albums as a leader. Tyner's most recent project for McCoy Tyner Music/Half Note Records is his first solo effort in almost a decade titled Solo: Live From San Francisco. The release is the third for his label and features eleven solo vignettes recorded at the Herbst Theater in 2007. Tyner's blues based piano style, replete with sophisticated chords and an explosively percussive left hand has transcended conventional styles to become one of the most identifiable sounds in improvised music. His harmonic contributions and dramatic rhythmic devices form the vocabulary of a majority of jazz pianists. Born in 1938 in Philadelphia, he became a part of the fertile jazz and R&B scene of the early '50s. His parents imbued him with a love for music from an early age. His mother encouraged him to explore his musical interests through formal training. At 17 he began a career-changing relationshi... (read more)

Julian Fleisher - Joe's Pub at the Public at Theater
Through December 12, 2017 - New York

Before the art of song was divided into narrow stylistic slices, before there was Jazz or Pop or Rock, there was Nightclub Singing. Like Sammy Davis, Jr, Ethel Water and Mel Tormé before him, Julian Fleisher mixes masterful interpretations of a wide range of popular songs with kick-ass showmanship and a generously endowed band that -- as the Washington Post put it -- "blew the roof off of Joe's Pub. "I have seen the future of vocal Jazz! He's got a marvelous, resonate baritone, with impeccable intonation, and a wonderful choice of material...talented, funny and hip."- LA Jazz Scene, East/ West Connections

David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band - Birdland
Through December 25, 2017 - New York

nspired by the noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues, David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band breathes life and passion into America's own great art form. Legendary record producer George Avakian describes the band in this way: "There has never been a band quite like this one. Most groups, past and present, stick to one style. Some current groups attempt to recreate early recordings in their entirety. These guys do neither. Inspired by divergent bands of the 1920s and 30s, you'll hear them swing a variety of styles in music by a wide range of composers, always true to the joy and heart of the music." Now in its 17th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city's best musical bargain! Tuba player David Ostwald leads a rotating lineup that features talents such as clarinetist Anat Cohen, trombonist/vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ehud Asherie, drummer Marion Felder and more!
