Ella Sang the Blues with Brianna Thomas - Dizzy's Club Coca Cola
Through September 15, 2018 - New York
Soulful vocalist Brianna Thomas reimagines Ella Fitzgerald's These are the Blues, the only all-blues album Fitzgerald ever released. Thomas is a commanding young singer oozing with personality, and when it comes to the blues she is the definition of a "showstopper." She has recently become quite an audience favorite at Jazz at Lincoln Center, having also performed Valentine's Day at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, the acclaimed Ladies Sing the Blues and Fabulous Dorsey Brothers shows in The Appel Room, and multiple concerts with rock legend Steve Miller in Rose Theater. After witnessing an early version of this program during the 2017 Generations in Jazz Festival, audiences, critics, and Jazz at Lincoln Center staff all agreed it was one of the best performances of the entire month-long festival. This Opening Weekend Appel Room concert is your chance to catch an expanded version of this instant hit show. For one of the most powerful current examples of the blues, don't miss Thomas and her A-list band performing tunes like "St. Louis Blues" and "Hear Me Talkin' to Ya" in Ella Sang the Blues. Free pre-concert discussion nightly at 6pm and 8:30pm.

In April 2005, Half Note Records captured the trio live during a week-long series of shows at the Blue Note, producing the album New York Cool (2005). Half Note again recorded the trio in action at the club last year, releasing the album This is Jazz near the end of 2011. AllMusic.com's Thom Jurek called the outing "the finest offering by this trio to date." This week at the Blue Note, the band looks build on last year's musical achievements with another hotly-anticipated residency. Donald Harrison is rightly regarded as one of the most influential musicians on the scene today. The son of late great Big Chief Donald Harrison, he began working with Roy Haynes at age 19 and Jack McDuff at age 20. He joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers at age 21 and soon co-led a deeply influential group with Terence Blanchard. In addition to his collaborations with luminaries like Christian Scott, Christian McBride, Cyrus Chestnut, Lena Horne, and Eddie Palmieri, he is a prodigious bandleader, having released a number of well-recei...
