Broadway Fall 2011 Preview Part 2 - Hugh Jackman Back on Broadway & More

WHERE: Broadway.

WHEN: Now and in the near future.

WHAT: A hefty influx of VIP entertainers from the silver screen, TV, music industry, and NYC stages -- all of whom are pushing Broadway’s theatrical momentum into high gear.

WHO: A-listers with serious acting chops, including Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett in The Mountaintop; Bernadette Peters and Jan Maxwell in Follies (tickets); Brooke Shields and Roger Rees in The Addams Family (tickets); Frank Langella in Man and Boy; Daniel Radcliffe and John Larroquette in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (tickets); Marlo Thomas, Steve Guttenberg, and Mark Linn-Baker in Relatively Speaking; Sutton Foster and Joel Grey in Anything Goes (tickets; recently extended through April 29); Stockard Channing, Rachel Griffiths, Stacy Keach, and Judith Light in Other Desert Cities; Alan Rickman, Lily Rabe, and Jerry O’Connell in Seminar; Hugh Darcy and Nina Arianda in Venus in Fur; Hunter Parrish of Weeds fame and Hannah Montana star Anna Maria Perez de Tagle in Godspell (tickets); Dulé Hill (Psych; The West Wing) in Stick Fly

…And just when it looked like the star wattage couldn’t get any more intense, along comes news of Hugh Jackman bringing his hit concert Hugh Jackman, Back on Broadway -- test driven in San Francisco and Toronto -- to the Great White Way starting October 25 and playing through January 1.

Hugh Jackman Back on Broadway

Last seen on Broadway in 2009 in the sell-out play A Steady Rain opposite Daniel Craig, Jackman’s last musical foray here was his Tony-winning portrayal of Peter Allen in The Boy From Oz (2003-2004). As for his current project, the X-Men star had this to say: “I can’t believe it’s been seven years since I was singing and dancing on Broadway… I’m so excited to be coming ‘home.’”

The unstoppable Broadway fantasy, Wicked (tickets) -- running neck-in-neck with Broadway’s newest superstar, The Book of Mormon, when it comes to scoring coveted tickets -- has become New York theatre’s techno trendsetter. Having officially opened in 2003 (when iPhone apps were barely a glint in Steve Jobs’ eye), the popular musical has teamed up with Mosaic Legends to create the first-ever electronic program book to be offered via the App store.

Wicked on Broadway

Cool? You have no idea. The WICKED® Mosaic Electronic Program Book, for iPhone and iPod touch, offers Wicked aficionados (and aficionado wannabes) access to photos from all the international productions along with costume sketches, behind-the-scenes details, production timelines, and -- my personal favorite -- over 1,700 trivia facts. And, at $1.99 from itunes.com/appstore or wickedthemusicalstore.com/Products/mosaic.aspx, this digital keepsake is not only a bargain when compared to traditional paper souvenir programs, but reflects the show’s ongoing effort to “adopt more environmentally responsible practices.”
