It seems like every food has it's own holiday (apologies for not wishing you a happy National Peach Ice Cream Day this past July 17th). Some foods are more deserving of others. Consider the humble, delicious oyster...because today is National Oyster Day and there are some great places in NYC that would like to help you celebrate the bivalve in all of its glory.

Gulliver's Travels author Jonathan Swift perhaps said it best: "He was a bold man that first ate an oyster." Thankfully, such a bold man existed and today is the the day you can salute that anonymous hero by stopping by one of the city's finer raw bars to indulge.

Of course, the best part of the oyster is often the drink that inevitably goes along with it, andd whether you prefer beer or wine with your well-iced half-shells, you're covered.

Oceana, the bustling midtown seafood spot, is serving up a special of six local oysters paired with a local craft brew of your choosing. For $15, you'll get a half-dozen Naked Cowboy, Blue Whale or Great South Bay oysters served alongside a Coney Island Lager, Blue Point Toasted Red Lager or Greenport Harbor Black Duck Porter. Even better: this special combo lasts well past National Oyster Day until August 31. Because we can all agree "National Oyster Month" has a much sweeter ring to it.

Meanwhile, wine lovers can rejoice at some of the restaurants in chef David Burke's burgeoning empire. At Fishtail, pair your oysters with a dry white Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine, whose slightly salty flavors bring out the brininess of the oyster. At David Burke fabrick, you'll want to order a glass of the Louis Roederer "Brut Collection" Champagne, because bubbly always pairs well bivalves. Meanwhile, David Burke Kitchen offers an excellent Chablis from Burgundy that perfectly balances out the creaminess of the oysters.

Either way, you're looking at a pretty happy National Oyster Day.
